It's just a thin stripe of high clouds. I'm 7 miles west of there and it already passed my area. I see it just to my east. Full sun here now. Feels primed for lots of lightning and rain today.

Yup; seems like within a half hour of my outdoor obs, (minor Jebwalk ) we started to clear.  Gonna adjust the window shade and hope for a T-storm.

Not sure this is near you, but got these from a friend in the Falls Hill area.

That first shot with the tree lodged in the space where the window used to be ....Ouch....that's weather pic of the year material.

I’ve never seen them on anything other than rocks

    Tall grass is a favorite.

Even if you keep your boots laced up, they manage to migrate to your ankles somehow. The bites/rash hangs on for a week. Very annoying.

Anyone ever had to shop for a stairlift for a parent/older relative?

My MIL is looking for one and the company which came in with an estimate was at $10K for one which curves around a landing and $7500 for two straight ones which meet on a landing.

Wanted to see if these were outrageous prices or not.

Don't remember what we paid, but I do recall that selling it back, (or to anyone), when preparing the house for sale, was not a good deal. Meaning...the used market is good for these if you are able to find one and are willing to remove it and install it yourself. This was about 2009/10 and I recall selling the stairlift for $500 back to the company that originally sold/installed it. There were a few on Craigslist back then, about the same price. Worth a look.

Edit: Yeah, here's one in MoCo only used a few times....$500:

... August is a pretty nice month here with the average high at DCA going from 88 to 84.

I don't think I can classify August as a nice month here.  I usually tell out-of-towners that July is the hottest, but August is the most miserable. (Maybe we're just sick of it by then).

(Of course, this brings up the question of what is a pretty nice month here? I dunno. But I do know that any month can get pretty crummy.)

Except for missing thunderstorms, this has not been a bad summer at all.  So far only three 95 degree days at DCA.

I think if we could poll the group we'd find a lot with very reasonably cool high temps this year (so far). I think some of the Virginians especially. I had one 94f day at my station as the hottest, so far.
    91f yesterday.

Oh yeah....I'm missing plenty of T-storms too.

Spontaneous combustion? As in piles of hay catching fire as a result of biological impetus and eventual chemical reactions? Seems more likely that they would start from lightning strikes.

This occurs, (for example), in highway maintenance when roadside brush cutting crews pile their chips at the shoulder areas. I have witnessed this along multi-mile stretches in MD or VA, with multiple smoldering brush fires from different chips piles.  They're not hard to control, but do get response from local FD. Also cause rubber-necking backups. (No surprise there).

It's not normal; conditions have to be just right. But, it's a good reason to try not to do brush cutting in hot summer wx.

2 more mid shifts and 45 minutes stand between me and a 4 day birthday weekend. I am so excited.....and tired :stun:

    Not weatherman burnout I hope?

Remember, many good souls stand with you. ( And maybe a few bad ones.)

  9. My Davis wx station ate up a battery, so I opened it up and found not just an ant farm, but a little wasp nest for extra measure. (Have had the ant situation before). Gonna try to upload some pics....

Looks like it worked. I used some borax based powder to prevent further attacks.

This unit might be 12-15 years old, not sure. Have had to replace the main board because the early versions had a problem with battery life, and I've noticed that ant nests seem to exacerbate the situation.
