Yup, we were just saying the same thing. Also it's hailing here.

That does not happen in a Cat 4 storm.
You just watched it happen in a cat 4 storm.

What's the best comparison hurricane for Mike? (Other than the obvious Sandy, pre-Sandy, post-Sandy, Sandy V, and Sandy.)
Was this as tight as Charley for the truly brutal winds?
Just eyeballing it I'd say this had a much wider area of damaging winds (and also stronger peak winds and much larger surge)

I said it in the main thread but will delete it...I’d like to see him charged with B&E. Completely irresponsible, and copycats with even less knowledge will someday get killed because of this.
Main thread is now 100% about Adair anyway.. just leave it.

Bad news is that between the live site map showing the chasers, tweets from other chasers who said they were in Mexico City, and Jeff Piotrowski's live feed it seems that there were a lot of chasers in major risk areas between the two. Jeff claimed to have been down there but barely made it out before storm surge and fallen trees blocked the way - and that was a bit before it got REALLY bad.
Hope others made it out or found places that held.
I can't really imagine deciding to attempt to ride out the storm surge and wind of a storm like this in a vehicle at sea level. That's not a reasonable plan. People having that little concern for their own personal safety is really disconcerting.

That looks like the place where the car ended up drifting around.
Yep, that's almost certainly it. Street view from that location matches what we saw on the feed.

This is really bad for them.

Wow, Brett Adair has some balls.

Conditions going downhill fast at Brett Adair's spot. Should get much much worse too. Concerned for surge at the spot he's at now too.

until something beats sandy she'll stay relevant. 1938 used to be the thing and then sandy pushed it out. something will eventually come to replace her.
Nice troll for NE peeps. 1938 4eva

no one is going to see sustained cat 4 conditions.
plenty of places to safely ride out this storm for chasers. weather channel crew with mike betties is being over dramatic
I'd forecast exactly those conditions for exposed areas on the right side of the eyewall e.g. the beachfront.

I don't even live there anymore yet I find myself wishcasting this into Port Charlotte..

Does slight risk mean the same thing it always did? This seems like a real dud compared to others.

Oh yeah there were tons of trees down and trees shredded. I was just comparing the number down there compared to what would happen here with 24 hours of TS winds and a peak 90 knot gust.
I'm guessing your conclusion was that NE would be much worse in terms of tree damage? From what I remember from Gloria on Cape Ann the winds were solidly TS but for a much shorter duration, tree damage was still widespread.

Pretty strong couplet right now north of Myrtle Beach moving north-northwest.
There was a funnel report and a water spout report on that one.

When the hazard is death by drowning it makes sense to err on the side of caution in terms of evacuations.
The logical thing to do is to prepare for the worst, so evacuations that turn out to be unnecessary (in hindsight) will always be an issue.

Now I remember why I don’t post here anymore. Moron conceded Mets like yourself. I know as much and more as you and 90% of everyone here.
Go on hyping a cat 1-2 storm.
Outta here.
Didn't take long for you to decide to stay.

I think we need to find a way to better account for freshwater flooding. Harvey was cat 4, but the winds are not what caused most of the problems.
Yeah, maybe rate each factor 1-5 (freshwater flood, surge, wind) and take the highest one.. There's no perfect way, but not accounting for the deadly effects is a mistake imo.

Floyd was a cat 2 on landfall..it killed 73 people in the US.
Ike was a cat 2 at landfall, it killed 110 people in the us and did 30 billion in damage.
Isabelle was a cat 2 and did 5.5 billion in damage and killed roughly 50 people.
Stop downplaying it.
The category system is the worst. Surge should be the most important factor in rating a storm since it's the killer.
