Yeah...as amazing as that storm was ... and it was multi faceted ( there was a wind damage and a tide problem at shore communities all the way down the Jersey shore/up to eastern Ma and coastal Nh in that too ) it was not a prolifiic snow producer over inland 'shadow' topographies.

Someone can probably drub up the snow chart from that - it's a easy google effort no doubt. But the CT River valley and the like, ...I think Springfield Ma only got like 2-4" but that may be just my memory - heh.  Meanwhile places like Sutton were up over 30 inches.

The only chart I could find is on page 107 of this PDF.

Still to this point in my life have I yet to experience a transition awe the likes of which I did back on the evening of December 10 1992.

I've told this story ...in prose novular format, so no sense waxing and laboring description all anew.  But, the paraphrased version:

We were experiencing large cat paws amid sheeting cold rains ... sideways at 38 and change F.

That was my first winter in VT.  It was a forecast of 12- 18+ for my area.  I spent 3 days watching CNN covering the storm while we were pounded by nothing but virga as the storm stopped a county away from me.  One of my least favorite events ever.

Until tomorrow's trends to the west.

Based on nothing but my gut and how the last couple of years of modeling and storms have been going (in my now feeble memory),  I expect a bit more of a NW trend this afternoon. (leading to some good meltdowns) Things will then trend back a bit to the east after that but the storm will have a bit more on the west side up here than the clown maps show and a heavy band will set up from MReeve to PF and up to Alex and Phineas.  Reeve and Freak will end up with 11 or so, Kev in Tolland will get his 8" and accompanying power outages, heaviest will be Monadnocks to Dendrite up to the Maine folks.  I get 3 to 5.

    That is all a guess.

I think I’m gonna head somewhere off the  highway in Concord. I drive a sports car and I’m not able to leave until like 5pm tonight so a 6 hour drive I’ll just be beating it, but I don’t wanna drive on rough roads

Chasing a snow storm in New England in a sports car- what could go wrong?

Please tell us you at least have snow tires on.

  6. The potential huge difference from the Upper Valley to S NH reminds me of a storm in the 98 to 01 time frame.  My memory is that it ended on the 23rd because my parents were driving up for Christmas.  We had very little in VT but I had to go to court in Manchester NH for a hearing first thing in the morning.  When I got there it was snowing 4+ inches an hour and the city was a ghost town.  The federal courthouse was closed and the roads in the middle of the city all had 6+ inches on them so I went to the Mall of NH to ride it out.  90 minutes and 6 more inches later the snow stopped.  Manchester got 17".

Does anyone remember this storm and know the year?  Is it an analog for this?

    In Vt ? !

what are you ...  3 years old -  LOL

I know it is odd but in 20ish seasons, VT I have never gotten a storm give me over 20 inches.  In this house 4 years,  we have topped out at 19 inches.  Granted that was within 4 days of another 18 inch storm.  In Peacham for 7 seasons but we never topped 18 inches and we were prone to occasional shadowing from the Whites.  Sure a couple of times I had measurable snow for 15+ straight days but most of the time it was snow globe events that only added up due to their frequency.

Biggest storms I have been in topped out about 22 or 23 inches in CNJ in 83 and 96.  I didn't keep records from when I lived in C VT from 92 to 02 but my memory does not have me topping 20 inches.  In 3/93 for instance, we got 17" .

With the NAM, it has me at 13'" at 84 hrs but cranking and the downstream numbers would indicate that we would get much more in the 12 hours after.

It is moot but, yeah, I don't think I have ever topped 23 inches.  Most winters, however, a SREF plume will give me 40+ at some point- if only.

Not quite as weird as the middle of my first December in Maine - 1973 - when we had RA and 56 in BGR while my parents in NNJ were 15 and IP.  However, having a 7 AM temp that's slightly milder than the average low in late July is noteworthy.

Was it 2015 when the high on July 4th was lower in parts of NE than it was on Christmas?

VT gov going overboard a bit requiring all kids returning to school after TDay to be asked if they went anywhere other than their house for TDay. If so, you have to quarantine for 10 days or take covid test. I'd tell the school to mind their own business.

Seems reasonable to me to ask.  Vermont requires vaccinations for kids to go to school so why not ask if they have engaged in the sort of behavior the government is asking Vermonters not to do this weekend because the Vermont data the govt is relying on is showing that 70% of the cases are occurring here due to such gatherings.  If the parents are going to not follow the State guidance, they have at least been given fair warning that they should keep the kids home or have 5 days to train them how to lie when asked.

    Turducken?

About 20 years ago we were having our first Thanksgiving in our then house.  We tried a Tofurkey, which is supposed to take about 2 hours to cook.  We had double wall ovens and  had the Tofurkey in the one we had used less often.  Within about 25 minute,s the outside was burned to a crisp.  Tough , dry Tofurkey made for a bad centerpiece to the meal.

We had a repairman come out the next week.  He told us that oven's thermostat was shot and it likely got to about 900 f inside ( I find that hard to believe but it is what he through out there.)

We turned that oven into storage and just used the other.  I have not had Tofukey since.

Maybe somebody has experience with this one:

My mother is recovering from Covid and may be discharged from the hospital tomorrow.  At this point, she is not able to care for herself and we are having problems finding a rehab facility for her.  We have been advised that she will probably still be shedding the virus for another week+ and none of us children have had Covid.  Presumably in a couple of weeks she will be able to come home and take care of herself, but we need a way to bridge this.

Most rehabs don't want anything to do with a Covid+ patient (I understand the logic).

Any insights from other's experiences would be appreciated.

I can't imagine this is an isolated problem.

    Are visiting nurses an option?

  12. 10 Vermont counties get Federal disaster status due to the drought:

    https://www.sevendaysvt.com/OffMessage/archives/2020/11/17/drought-disaster-declared-for-10-vermont-counties

    Quote

Federal officials have declared 10 counties in Vermont to be a natural disaster area due to the 2020 drought — a decision that allows farmers who lost crops to lack of rainfall to apply for disaster aid.

The counties are Addison, Bennington, Chittenden, Washington, Rutland, Windham, Windsor, Orange, Essex and Caledonia. Under federal law, the adjoining counties are also eligible for aid, meaning that farmers in all of Vermont and certain counties in New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire will also qualify for aid over the next eight months.

Vermont farmers estimated at least $27 million in crop losses due to the drought. Corn and hay yields were down by as much as 75 percent, steams and farm ponds ran dry, and farmers were forced to haul water and feed animals harvested hay when pastures dried up. In Ferrisburgh, farmer Erik Andrus lost acres of rice that he'd planted.

The contact tracing has been showing gyms, restaurants, stores, etc are not where its spreading. The data in VT I saw was 71% of the tracing from contact tracers were  social gatherings of friends/family. I think they even found deer camps were high on the list. Very few to no cases from the other places.

The governor lectured “skeptics” of guidelines he released on Friday, which allowed restaurants to stay open but banned all inter-household gatherings.

“There’s not much we can do to stop you,” he acknowledged, of those who defy the rules. “Please, don’t call it patriotic. Don’t pretend it’s about freedoms. Because real patriots serve and sacrifice for all, whether they agree with them or not.”

Scott explained that 71% of outbreaks reported from Oct. 1 to Nov. 13 were linked to “social events, parties and people hanging out at home or bars and clubs.” He added Vermont has not seen the virus spread widely at schools, restaurants or other businesses.

Dr. Mark Levine, the state health commissioner, said those parties came in a variety of sizes of parties — Halloween gatherings large and small, dinner parties, baby showers, “people in the high single numbers at a deer camp.”

The virus spike stemmed from “opportunities for people to get together from different households in very modest-size circumstances. And I would say that a modest-size circumstance could be a Thanksgiving, a dining room table with six people at it, three couples from different places. That’s all it would take. It’s very, very well documented.”

  14. Does anyone have a prediction on how much longer we will be restricted from going in stores unless we are wearing shoes and a shirt?  I prefer to be topless and unshod when selecting my food at the grocery store. What is the point of Fritos if you don't have Free Toes?

I bet that county map would have many in-state counties higher than the neighboring state's counties due to population ratios in the next couple weeks if they had stuck with it.

Map is still being made though it has been over-ridden.  Currently only 2 VT counties (Rutland and Franklin) would meet the safe to travel criteria set at 400 active cases per 100k and Rutland now has a nursing home outbreak so I doubt it will continue to meet the level for long.  Only two counties, 1 in Maine and 1 in NY would still meet the "safe to travel" limit.

    Map can be found here:
