It’s ok. It happens. Can’t control the weather. I might try to get some turns tomorrow since we decided to stay another night. The road is awful right now. Took me an hour to go 500 yards from condo to the top. Problem is all the people getting stuck and blocking the road. Maybe I could get home today if I tried but with 2 little kids it’s just not worth the risk. It’s bad out there and would be for about 75 miles until you clear east of the high ridges to the Shenandoah Valley. And I’m not even sure how good they got those roads there yet but at least there is no upslope snow there.

Oh no!  Yes, that is the issue around here whenever it snows.  It's almost impossible to reach the top, not because your vehicle can't make it, but others are stuck blocking the road.  So many guests are driving their 2 wheel drive vehicles with bald tires...they have no chance.  Also, taking traction control 'off' is the key to get momentum up these switchbacks....

So far the skiing is an epic fail. All the high speed lifts are on wind hold. None of the expert terrain is accessible. Sitting in the lodge while kids play at kids world debating if it’s worth waiting in hopes the wind dies and they open. Talked to a ski patrol and didn’t like the effusive way they avoided saying anything about prospects. Usually when they aren’t saying hopeful things that’s bad.

Sorry.  That sucks especially if wanting to ski the difficult terrain.  Go to Silver Creek though to just get out of the crowds and at least have fresh tracks.

Yea we stopped skiing early and had lunch. Now at split rock pools.  Tomorrow will be awesome if the wind dies down.  We probably won’t get too much between 6pm-midnight in the dryslot but I expect the upslope to start cranking by 1-2am. I could see another 6-10” from that later tonight through tomorrow.

I was wondering if you were still out on the slopes!

I will be there also...I only expect several inches of snow/ice from the front side of this storm...but they will clean up on the backside once the winds flip to the NW.  That's perfect upslope flow and it's the kind of snow they get very high ratios, 20-1.  I could see them getting 8" from that late Sunday night through Monday morning.

Always appreciate your knowledge and posts!

NAM keeps that dry slot over WV (and out of western MD).  I wouldn't be surprised if I mix in McHenry for a short period of time with the 850 winds blasting from the east before the winds shift back out of the NW at 850.

Will be in Snowshoe this weekend.  That is the issue right now, dry slot and mixing.  Snowshoe seems to switchover for a period of time with this type of setup.  At least right now, my expectations will be on the lower snowfall totals until the switchover occurs and back to snow early Monday.

Okay. This is for you skis fans out there. I'm looking at Snowshoe just for snow-chasing. I like fancy. What are some of the nice places to stay at Snowshoe that is within walking distance to food? There are some places that are located in Village Center. Is that where restaurants are? I want a place with the most snow. I see some villas with garages. Some that look like townhomes. Those are cool. I'm not too familiar with the area. I've never been. So North Mountain and South Mountain, Silver Creek, etc. mean nothing to me.

    Thanks for your help!

Are you looking to buy or just chase (rent) during an event?

'The Village' is all condos and is where 90% of restaurants and shops are.  There are many condos, townhomes within walking distance to the Village.  Most of which do need updating.  South Mountain is where Soaring Eagle Condos are.  They are the newest and nicest.   About a 10-15 minute walk to the Village from there.  A couple of restaurants are there as well.  Silver Creek is on the North Side and kinda secluded but free shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes.  Brand new Old Spruce Brewery is there though.

If you are looking to buy, Spencer Woody at First Tracts Real Estate is the guy.  Knows everything about the real estate market there.  If just going to chase a snow event, I would stay in The Village at the following buildings:

Allegheny (year round heated pool) or at an updated Rimfire, Seneca or Highland House condo.  All Village central.
