I don't expect the schools to be handled rationally by this country during this pandemic. That's why we chose to homeschool. In-person school is like jail for kids, and remote learning is basically just homeschooling with an overseer watching you on Zoom.

Who has more COVID exposure: teachers or TSA airport screeners? Protecting teachers by closing down schools (even it screws the children) seems to enjoy more support than does the idea of shutting down the airports to protect the TSA screeners. Interesting.

From here you can get his daily reports. He leaves some interesting thoughts on past storms, and also general environmental happenings such as the sap runs and leaf changes. Also, he sometimes provides some local record tidbits for windchills, wind speed, daily snowfall, etc. I like to look at past reports for upcoming periods. Gives you an idea of what to expect in the upcoming few weeks based on what he has seen over the past decade+. He is close to me. It's just a quick walk through another lot to his place so I defer to his obs on all events because I am basically a rodeo clown when it comes to obs. There is also a new observer between Alex and me. He seems to leave some comments sometimes. Some of his snowfall measurements have me scratching my head a bit. Will watch this one all winter to see if it levels out.

I feel like he'd be able to be giving a dry, straightforward scientific lecture at a university and while everyone is diligently taking notes he slowly weaves in some zany theories and thoughts that seem sort of related to the topic but later when you check your notes you are just befuddled.

LOL I really like this post, but I think it was wise to respond to my post in this thread.

Yup, I have plenty of protected woods where I expect deep snow to build up. There is a deep gulley by the barn that should fill with several feet of snow.
-
It's worth it for the view. Most of the houses around here just look at a bunch of trees. You wouldn't even know the Northern Presidentials are right there.
-
It’s very wooded and protected. I know where he lives... LOL My lot is probably the most cleared on Randolph Hill. Most others are heavily wooded. The CoCoRaHS guy’s spot is epic for retention. Shaded and protected all the time.

... in a winter that happens every 500 years or so. LOL

Just 24 here. Expected more of a temp rise by now.

Yep, that 5 inches he measured in mid-October really put him over the top on this analysis. I have noticed that his measurements are super-accurate to the point that it doesn't always reflect the sensible weather on the ground, if that makes sense. In both of the 5 inch storms for Randolph so far things were so stretched out and marginal there was never more than 3 or so inches OTG at any given time.
-
Same exact thing here in Berlin/Gorham/Shelburne zone.
-
On the very short Randolph data set, it's about 70% I believe last time I checked. Only 11 years however so not really definite. Certainly well-within normal to be bare on Thanksgiving. Looks like there might still be a chance for NNE this year. The forecast around Turkey Day looks like a mixed bag mess setup. Will need to see which way it breaks. There are several little events on the horizon that all have marginal temps. We could exit the next week+ period with a few inches of snow in the books or nothing but chilly rain.

It’s a cesspool, why bother?

18 degrees at 1:15 PM. Impressive for sure.

Yes, but from a strictly economic standpoint, the workers in the minority communities who make the money are not dying from COVID in serious numbers. I suspect most of them really want to keep working, because if they lose their jobs, they are finished AND grandma still might die. The call for lockdowns screws them twice...
-
From what I have been told, those big gatherings will lead to more community spread which means you will be infected next time the DoorDash guy shows up at your apartment with Thai food. Sorry, buddy.
-
In my large house with a lot of property without having to really go anywhere unless I want to. Nothing worse than people like me telling working stiffs they need to give up their jobs and stay home, or else they kill grandma.

Those of you assuming restrictions are being lifted fairly early in 2021 (spring/summer) are basing that assumption on (1) the majority of people choosing to receive the vaccine and (2) the government deciding they don't care if a bunch of people skip the vaccine and drop dead of COVID. I think those are very flawed assumptions based on what we have seen the governors do over the last six months.

With a virus with a survival rate at 99.7% (and even higher for those under age 50), is that all that surprising?
-
We don't need to debate it here. I am a cynic and a bit of a conspiracy theorist when it comes to govt power. We will see what happens. Fingers crossed I am wrong for everyone's sake.

I had a few small chairs from an outdoor dining table blow way into the woods too, I just noticed. Crazy how they managed to get through all the columns and obstructions to find their way into the field. The wind is relentless here when it gets going. It swirls too which is part of how this furniture managed to escape I think. Time to clear the decks. Lesson learned.

I am just not convinced that mother hen govt is simply going to let people "make it their own problem" if they don't take the vaccine. Does that sound like something Cuomo, Newsom, or Whitmer would say? LOL well, maybe Cuomo.
-
I am someone who has always been fine with a national ID card. Probably just because my job means the Feds already know everything about me, and I already carry a Federal ID anyway. I would be fine with that ID having info about my vaccination status, if I so choose. But I know that isn't the answer for the vast majority of people and would lead to terrible govt overreach. I think what you and will said about it being based on a timeline and availability widely is the only way to handle this.

I think anyone who wants the vaccine should be able to take it, but once you take it the restrictions need to be lifted. That's the tradeoff. The virus is very, very low risk to most people. Asking them to take a vaccine requires something in exchange, IMO. That's having their old freedoms back. I also don't think shaming people for being scared of this rushed vaccine and calling them idiots is fair either. There are reasons to be wary about how this has been developed and will be rolled out. The damn liberal governor of NY and VP-elect are saying the same thing. It's not just a fringe weirdo viewpoint. I personally would take the vaccine if offered to me. If only to calm a few of the older folks in my sphere who are very scared of the virus. I don't expect it will be offered to me for a long while, however.
