Additional snow to come today. We will likely make a run at over 3'

Nice!  Moist cyclonic flow with air temps in the low 20’s and lake temps in the 40’s is always a winning combo!  Not sure where the official forecast ended up, but seems like these relatively early season events usually overproduce.

  2. Merry Christmas!!

5” of paste here. Looks amazing clinging to the tree branches.

I think the GFS did a good job with this storm. Seems like we tracked it forever...but GFS consistently showed snow in WNY as a storm road up the cold front with rain issues from ROC east. Pretty impressive for 7-day lead time.

Still amazing to this day that such a wide swath received 3+ feet of snow from southern Niagara to the south towns...that might be once in a life time

I lived in South Cheektowaga for that one. Only time in my life I’ve legitimately been “snowed in”.  5+ feet in the driveway and side street for over 4 days. I lived in the CNY bullseye zone for the blizzard of 93 (Weedsport) and incredible as that storm was we were driving around the next day.

  4. As much as I would love the GFS to verify (for WNY interests) the Canadian seems more realistic.  Lots of rain followed by an inch or so of snow after the front barrels through.  Then some lake effect on mainly westerly winds as the storm heads through Quebec.  But a long way to go to figure out details!  Definitely nice to have something to track around Christmas though for a change

Hit 64 yesterday at KBUF at 1:31 PM, already 63 today at 10 am. KBUF is +5.3 for the month. I think we finish +8-10. 2020 might end up being top 2 for warmest years ever with 2012.

Agree. Looks like if we flip cooler later this month it’s still only close to normal. Damage will have been done.

    Warmest November week ever!

Streak of 60s could be longest of all time

BUFFALO, NY: — Buffalo is on the way to break a record that has stood in the books for 80 years! It's the kind of weather event that occurs literally once in a lifetime. The streak of 60s that started this week could end up making this the longest run of 65F+ days ever felt in November and essentially the warmest stretch of weather in Buffalo history for the month.

Officially Buffalo is off to a great start recording 69F and 67F on Wednesday & Thursday of this week and has a great shot at hitting the mark again on Friday bringing the total to 3 in a row... but how many does Buffalo need to break the record? That number stands at 7.

Is the streak 60’s or 65+?  BUF is at 61 right now, not sure if we hit 65 earlier. Strong SW breeze is keeping it a bit cooler.  Probably same deal tomorrow.

  7. What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time we were about to enter the coldest/snowiest early November stretch of weather I can recall. 1-2 weeks of snow cover at BUF, some days averaging 20 below normal. This year, we bask in near summer warmth and sun. Payback for the miserable weather in April and first part of May this year I guess.

The rain is really struggling to make it up onto the lake plain.  Will be interesting to see how far North it can push..

Will my softball game be canceled tonight?....only time will tell (but I'm secretly hoping it gets rained out)

Still no rain here other than a brief shower. This would have been torturous in winter. 6”+ just south with dense overcast and a flurry IMBY.

We are on the verge of record breaking territory for the lack of Arctic sea ice for this time of year.  It's just insane to see that just 30 or 40 years ago we had nearly twice as much as ice at this time as we do today (~4 million square kilometers more of pack ice!).  If you don't think that makes a huge difference in our winters then I don't know what to tell you.  Climate change is accelerating and will decimate winters as we know them in the coming decade or two.  Just heart breaking to see this..

Will it really decimate our winters though? I mean, the sun will still leave the Arctic for 6 months and the ice will reform through the winter. How much difference will it make down here at lower latitudes if the temps are -20 on average around the arctic circle versus -30?  I know this is oversimplifying things and no doubt temps are warming. Maybe it’s more a question of how warm can we really get in winter months when farther northern latitudes will always be super cold thanks to no sun.

To counter my own thoughts, perhaps the normal seasonal snow pack pushes north year after year, say from near Ottawa now (they always seem to retain a pack when we torch and green in winter!) to insert name of Canadian town here. In which case we end up with winter climo of Columbus, OH in 25 years.  So yeah, decimated would be a good choice of words in that scenario.
