Hard to function out there between the aggressive invasive tiger skeeters from Asia and the humidity. I can eradicate the natives in the early Spring, but these bastards can continue to breed in a drought.

We noticed a lot more stinger bugs out at the pool today, too

  2. Spent the day at Hershey, 70s and mostly cloudy, with random sprinkles. Was worried it would be a wetter day given gfs and euro yesterday had heavier showers off/on most of the day. So glad that didn’t pan out.

Cold fronts/airmasses for this Saturday and then next Tuesday/Wednesday look beautiful. Dew points in the upper 40s/low 50s with temps in upper 70s/low 80s.

ooooo that sounds lovely. I took off work next week for the kiddo's last week of summer before school starts and was looking at what day we wanna go to Hershey.

Agreed.   And it should be rotating - the wind profiles definitely favor rotation, and the profiles are stronger to the east and northeast of those cells.    I just wonder if it's rooted above the boundary layer.     Would not be surprised if an MD came out for northern MD / southern PA at some point in the next couple of hours.

Okay so some tweets I’m seeing about sneaky overnight tornado threat is real? I am northern MD…

Agreed. The CWG articles about how this was a bust because no tornadoes were recorded is short sighted. They should know better that damage assessments day up to 10 days and these watch boxes will more than verify.

They really said that? That's a shame. Just because there were no confirmed tornadoes as of yet, doesn't mean the severe threat was a bust.

To be honest, we're fortunate the low level winds weren't more conducive for sustained rotating updrafts. Monday had the potential to be a late breaking High Risk day. Once the 18z special RAOBs went up, it was clear this was going to be a straight line wind kind of day, with embedded spin ups. This reinforces my belief that real mesoscale forecasting hinges on things like soundings, mesonets, and a well rained cadre of field spotters (SKYWARN, fire, EM, DT etc.). It's hilarious and frustrating to see DC bros cackling about how this was a complete bust because the national mall wasn't wiped off the face of the earth, while the suburbs where everyone lives were hit much harder.

For sure. Could have been much worse than it was. My people at the dance studio were asking me all sorts of questions, what to look for on radar for tornado threats, how to read velocity. Was pretty funny to me that they actually wanted to know all the nerdy details.

I am incredibly glad we closed Monday night, could not have imagined having a dance studio full of kids, parents traveling and such. Two other studios in the area stayed opened and we heard they had families trapped for hours because they just couldn't travel home.

As expected, SPC and NWS are out doing real yeoman's work again. AWell done.

I read CPT's PWS from yesterday -- lot of straight line wind damage, but they did find some clusters of intense damage in southern York they were going to investigate further today. Didn't say where, I wonder if it's the Glen Rock area.

  8. Kiddo and I ventured north into PA. Had to turn around once in PA and take 83 as York Rd was closed in PA. So many trees down everywhere. Numerous on houses, lots of large branches and trunks cut up along the sides of roads, power is completely out in Shrewsbury and Stewartstown. Never made it west towards New Freedom, too many roads closed. Giant and Walmart in Shrewsbury were handing out water and ice, taking cash for non perishable items.

CTP is apparently investigating the area for a possible tornado. Makes sense. There was a decent, sustained mesocyclone moving through that area.

I heard they were heading out to Glen Rock, Shrewsbury over towards Stewartstown. Friend sent some reports in to WGAL from Stewartstown and they said NWS would be out today

My brother in law is a landscaping foreman who lives in Glen Rock.  He said it took him 2 hours to get from 83 to his house.  Impassible roads.  Fortunately he had chain saws with him and along with good Samaritans pitching in to help moving logs out of the way he was able to get home.  A large red oak on the corner of his property split and went into a neighbor's home.

He said lots of signs were damaged including the one at the border.  Poles snapped.  Definitely some ferocious bursts.

I was pulling into my driveway when the winds kicked up.  Little anemometer at the top of the tower was spinning so fast the cups looked like my wife's Kitchen Aid mixer on ludicrous speed!

I had my phone and wanted to take video as I could hear the ROAR but the rain was blowing too much even under the porch and my wife was holding the door and was telling me to GTFI and not let the cat out!

Just as I got inside I heard pops that sounded like small caliber rifle fire and knew exactly what it was.  She said we lost some pine trees.  Those southern pines crack so loud when they break.  And right after that moment the power went poof.  No flicker, just out like it was switched off.  That's when I knew it was going to be a long night.

I have friends in Glen Rock and they said it was mayhem. Just a mess.

We closed the studio again tonight, most of the area in and around Stewartstown doesn't have power, and we've heard from quite a few of our families who are all dealing with cleanup in their backyards. Definitely a large area along the MD/PA line all dealing with the same mess.

Same in Monkton. Initial burst of wind took the power just after 5:00 pm. Now after 8 am still nothing.

I actually have no idea what conditions were across the area in general.

Bad. My drive from the house to Hereford was nothing but downed trees everywhere you looked. Can only imagine what things are like once you get off the main roads. Coworker who lives in Freeland said it was equally bad at his house. Shrewsbury/New Freedom/Stewartstown area is a mess. Rotation went through Glen Rock, again a total mess.

Hope the power is back ASAP!

Power outages can be fun as a kid - and maybe are a little interesting for the first hour or so as an adult...but after that things get pretty blah fast.

it wasn't terrible overnight, boring but not awful. but i knew she'd be bored out of her mind today if we had stayed home, so had her pack a bag and she's on her ipad while i get some work done. Mr map stayed home with the dogs, will keep us in the loop on the power situation. He and I barely slept, but at least the kiddo got a good night of sleep hahaha.

Hope your power is restored soon.  Our power flickered about 10 times over a couple mins when the initial line came through.  Likely due to trees contacting the lines.  Normally, the breakers allow 3 or 4 spikes before the breakers trip as a safeguard (according to a Va Power lineman).  So it appears we got lucky.  Many weren't as fortunate.

12+ hrs now and still no power
