Here in Chester County PA we average a White Christmas (at least 1" of snow on the ground on Christmas day) 1 of every 4 years. We have had 30 White Christmases over the last 122 years of Chester County Records. The first being in 1902 with 3" on the ground and the last time being 2012 with 2" on the ground.

The snowiest Christmas was 1966 with 25" of snow on the ground.

White Christmases by decade Snowiest to least

1960's = 6 WCs (including 4 in a row from 1960 to 1963)

2009's - 3 WCs / 1990's - 3 /1980's - 3/ 1909's - 3/ 1919's - 3 / 1970's - 2 /1950's - 2 / 1940's - 2/ 1930's - 1 / 1920's - 1

I was thinking of that earlier, 50 years ago today (and it was a Saturday as well) we had 20" of snow on Christmas Eve, and my first experience of thundersnow. Best Christmas Eve ever :lol:!

Ha!  I have some (color) slides of the aftermath of that storm packed away somewhere with me and my younger sis in snow suits and Yogi Bear boots!  I think Philly had a foot of snow.  The following 10 years after that were a complete wash, although I remember the glacial (in terms of temps) winter of '77 - notably January.

That 76-77 winter was a cold one. I recall it being pretty much below freezing from around Thanksgiving through Christmas, with no accumulating snow at all until Christmas night. That snow was awesome to see! I think that wait was harder than waiting for snow with warm temps, although we were ice skating outside before Christmas which was nice...
