  1. Yeah, I can’t stand when people from other regions say “you get 30-40 inches every year, stop complaining.” Hell I even had someone on our sub tell us that we should be happy to live here snow wise rather than dc because we average around 40 inches. I would rather average 20-25 inches a year, but have a chance at a storm that is a foot plus every couple years rather than having to get excited about events that overperform for 3 inches. Seriously, when I saw the upstate NY crowd complaining about not hitting kuchera totals in our giant bust event several weeks ago, or when I see the mid Atlantic complaining about misses when they’ve had multiple foot plus storms in the last five years, I really have to hold my tongue from getting myself banned. We live in a god awful spot for snowstorms.
  2. Last word on this, without getting too deep into a political discussion...I think we all know most corporations aren’t acting with their employees interests first in most situations. I’m not sure what the answer is on any issue without outside regulation.
  3. The question we have to ask..is it really needed that Best Buy, McDonald’s, or a bank be open this morning? I know we dont want more oversight, but on the other hand if companies aren’t willing to self police what do you do. I remember I worked best buy during the feb 5-6 2010 event...the store was open feb 6th. That is a problem IMO.
  4. I honestly don’t know what the answer is on this one. I don’t want the government telling businesses they have to close, but at the same time, if a businessl like Walmart is going to force people into work in cases like this I think there needs to be some oversight.
  5. Lots of folks on Reddit complaining about the poor road conditions and not enough being done, and it’s frustrating having to explain when it is 8 degrees you can’t really do anything to melt snow.
  6. The latest high res models have been nudging north. Looks like 2 inches in Pittsburgh...I’d 100% take it at this point.
  7. It is looking worse and worse every run...too far south now. Figures.
  8. Yeah, I doubt someone in 1910 was using a snowboard and clearing it every hour. Like I said, anecdotally, I feel like lake effect has been a total non factor the last several years. I know we had a squall a couple weeks ago, but outside of that I’m really having a hard time thinking of any lake effect events this year, and really any that amounted to much the last couple years. I certainly remember many more days when I was younger that we would have off and on squalls al day and get maybe an inch or two.
  9. Yep. When was the last time we got a real solid front end thump? I remember those all the time growing up..getting 3 or 4 inches, then ice that turned it into a skating rink, then snow at the end. We don’t even get those anymore.
  10. I can remember getting thunder snow more often when I was a kid back in the 80s. We'd get a squall so intense that it would be a complete whiteout with thunder and lightning. It wouldn't last long of course, but you'd pick up a half inch or inch in just 10 minutes. Then the sun would come out and it would quickly be gone. Haven't experienced one of those in a lot of years. Yep..I remember squalls that looked like thunderstorm cells on radar. Heck, I even remember more clippers that gave an inch or two growing up. Have we even had a clipper this year?
  11. It might just be me misremembering, but I seem to remember when I was younger late fall lake effect events being much more common. It was always hit or miss down here, but you could pick up an inch or two if you got under a band, and you could get impressive squalls on and off all day. That doesn’t happen anymore. i also remember that lake effect would be shut off generally by January...yet I know that now big lake effect events are common into Jan/Feb in western ny. I don’t think it is easy to see evidence of climate change on a year to year basis, but I am convinced that lack of lake effect events in November and December here, and a longer lake effect season in the snow belts is a direct indication of it.
  12. I was looking at that event...won’t rates be exceptionally high due to how cold it is?
  13. I’m not sure why KPIT hasn’t upgraded to a windchill warning for us.
  14. First, it’s cold out. second, the event Thursday night into Friday looks decent on the nam and gfs. Only about .2 inches qpf, but I’d imagine with temps in the single digits and teens decent ratios. Perhaps a 2-4 type event?
  15. Given how the NAM performed on the last storm....ehh what am I saying, it will be rightthis time.
  16. I’m still waiting in that apps bomb, 1950 redux Henry m promised us about 10 years ago. One if these days we will get hit. I’d love an I 95 running miller A that throws snow back to us...I’m pretty much over miller b’s and having to thread the needle.
  17. Add them to my list of folks that I don’t want to see get another storm...didn’t they get a huge blizzard last year too?
  18. Looking at the final snow map for this is going to be painful. You go 100 miles west they got 6-12. 50-100 miles north, same thing. 50-100 miles east, a lot of 6+ reports.
  19. Woah...visibility just dropped to about a quarter of a mile in Bellevue. NWS upped our point and click totals. Would be hilarious if we verified our 4 inches in the most backwards way possible.
  20. Dry slot filled in pretty well, and we have switched to very heavy sleet. I’d imagine that road conditions will be truly awful for most of the day tomorrow with bitter temps and a layer of ice. We might even squeeze out a bit of snow!
  21. Temps are finally dropping..we are close to changing over....and we are getting dryslotted.
  22. Problem is, we are dryslotting and the deform band is lifting north.
  23. Observation from Pittsburgh. 35 degrees, rain, 0 snow accumulation.
