The wind storm was one of the most impressive I can remember. Given official gusts that are only taken at one specific spot, I would not be shocked in the least if there were a few 70mph gusts scattered through the region.
The main thing I take from this is that if we ever get a wind storm like this in a month where there is foliage, the damage would be pretty catastrophic. Whether it be an early fall mega storm or a tropical system, it would take down a ton more trees. A lot of the trees down were pines, so just imagine all trees carrying a ton of extra weight with leaves.
Also, agree with the statements upthread..it was dumb to cancel the warning. I think in general the NWS could use some common sense on issuance of warnings.
For example, last weeks snow event was about as impactful as we ca have in a short period, and the timing was awful. The normal person though sees advisory rather than warming and thinks it won’t be that bad.
