  1. I hope we get a few SE Mass Specials this winter. There was a good one in '93 that I distinctively remember in early Feb. ACK had 60 mph winds. I wonder how the cape did in that storm. Feb. 1/2, 1993. I went home from daycare early on the 1st. I remember the teachers talking about how we were going to get a bad storm. I looked outside and saw the battleship gray color of the clouds hanging low. Then there were very small snowflakes that stuck to the teachers coat.

That night was windy with light snow.

  2. BDL may have had only 1.38" but like I said, places on the eastern edge of the valley had 1" more.

I posted this earlier this year but I put up a video that my brother and I shot during the storm driving from Stafford up to Union and then on to Worcester, Hull and Boston before returning.  I measured around 24" in Union in the morning and when we returned there was about 30".  You can also see the transition from snow to rain and the wave action in Hull.

My dad took me to see the houses getting washed out to sea during the nor'easter. We lived on ACK. I'll never forget the waves. The air smelled of the sea. Downtown was impassable in spots, very much like it was during the No Name Storm, or the Perfect Storm as it is now known. My mom wanted to kill him for taking me so close to the breakers (I was 4.) We recorded it in the storm album, which he maintains to this day. He said of the December 1992 nor'easter that it reminded him of the March 30th 1984 storm. He was in the coast guard then and he went to go check on Great Point Light. The Galls, a tombolo which connects Great Point with the rest of Nantucket were breached and he had to time the waves. They were breached in 1991 and this storm. Here is a picture of Great Point right after the 1984 storm:5997791.jpg?424

The Storm of the Century in 1993 gave us 75 mph winds and officially 2 inches of snow, but dad and I recorded 7 inches in the parking lot of RB Corcoran and our apartment. My theory on the 2 inches is because it was measured at the airport, which is on a broad open plain and the wind whipped everything away.

  3. The winter of '95/'96 was really something down here on the Cape (I was living out on ACK Island with my mother at the time, hey I was 7 years old.)

I remember this storm very, very distinctly because I was at daycare and the staff were commenting that it was going to snow heavily. The director's husband worked for the Steamship Authority and she said that they would not be running the boats. My mother picked me up during the height of the storm and it was a harrowing ride down Old South Road back to our house. The storm lingered into Tuesday the 2nd. I remember my dad being wicked angry because they hadn't gotten a delivery that was expected at RB Corcoran. The storm is one of my "cult favorites" because it was so localized (ORH only got 0.8" and BOS got 1.2") It's a pure SEMASS Special.

  8. some memories:

3/16-17/04: Looked like it was going to be a bust when I woke up that morning, because the sun was shining brilliantly. Todd Gross (remember him?) even said "Don't be fooled by the sunshine." The snow came down thick and heavy on ACK, but halfway through we switched over to ZR. We ended up getting 3.5" out of it.

3/18/04: I believe this was OES, but it could have been attached to the previous storm. I recorded another inch at my grandmother's house on New Mill Street in ACK.

3/19/04: This was Mother Nature redeeming herself for the bust she gave us. 7 inches when all was said and done. The next day I went sledding in a short sleeve shirt and blue jeans.

12/31/98-1/1/99: This was a surprise event for us out on the islands. I think, *THINK* we got 8 inches out of this. Edgartown got 0.3 inches. CQX didn't receive anything. I've tried emailing BOX but they don't really know much about it either.
