  1. Canceled plans for the kids tomorrow 24 hours out when we had to make the call. Will be disappointing if little happens tomorrow given how hard it is to arrange covid-safe kids activities in winter.

Oh well. Bring on the snow!

CWG is the worst.  A true no guts no glory forecast everytime.

Science and weather especially are full of uncertainty. They just express it better than most. I'll take their range forecasts over "Joe From Channel 5 here calling for  6 inches of snow"

But I know you know that.

Yep, and ironically they (VA, MD, and DC) didn’t pre treat the roads.  I mean usually they treat the roads for cold rain in January...

Yeah I remember driving only a mile home from visiting a pediatrician's office with a very pregnant wife that night. I think it was around Jan 12 of 2016? The roads were impassable after only MAYBE an inch of snow and the various DOTs got hammered for it. I think that's still part of the reason they overtreat now.

A few inches of snow and kids can’t open their computers? We’re screwed..

Teachers are home with even fewer options for child care than before. Some kids can't get to their virtual learning locations. District offices are closed, and above all else, many students simply won't be present with snow outside. That's before any consideration of power outages, which have been few with this storm. I'm not arguing that school is impossible, but this is all still new and it's not a trivial decision.

On the other hand, MCPS did elect to keep virtual learning intact, so it's definitely case by case. We'll see how it goes with MCPS and whether it's a disaster of teachers taking personal days to care for kids, and absent students.

So the DC metro area was forecast to receive 4-8" of snow.  After this is all over, it seems that forecast will verify.  Granted it will take 48 hours of sporadic light snow to get there, but I wonder why there is so much gloom in this forum.  The heavier snow was always going to be further NE.  At least it wasn't a complete whiff like 12/30/2000 or 12/26/2010 or countless others.

I agree - days like today are always disappointing, but it's still enough snow to play and sled and have a snowball fight.

The real busts are days like Mar 2013 that just kill your soul.

  6. Not doing a proper snow board, but there's a solid 2" on smooth surfaces right now (a bit north of DTSS). It's enough for the kids to throw snowballs and sled, not enough to really go nuts or bother shoveling yet.

Essentially nothing but snow dust right now. Its not accumulating. (eta at 2:33pm it's legitimately snowing again)
