  1. There is no other place to build there, and Helene's flood was orders of magnitude bigger than any prior flood, so it reached areas that had been assumed to be safe. Much like what is about to happen to Jamaica. And landslides happen where you never think a flood will happen. To say Helene didnt have any "wiped off the map" damage as one poster said, is just wrong. Ask Chimney Rock and Bat Cave and Minneapolis and any number of other communities. When the mountainside comes down, everything is gone. I pray for these poor people in the way of this one.
  2. The real horror may be the flooding that comes down from the mountains into places like Kingston.
  3. Helene showed the trees just become battering rams when the mountainside collapses and goes downriver.
  4. This will be Andrew + Katrina + Helene among some of the poorest people in the hemisphere.
  5. But those resorts are big concrete buildings. If the worst of the wind and surge were to slam into Kingston....
  6. Tell you what. You come take your time in the barrel for a few late summers/early falls and then let us know how unfortunate it is that you don't get hit.
  7. Anyone want to go surf at Nazare later this week??
  8. Honest question - increasing SSTs would seem to make an AMO Inactive period more active than it otherwise would be, wouldn't it?
  9. Yet you have not been banned despite asserting both positions. Hmmmm.
  10. That's great. I'm just saying you'll never see me weep when one of these SOBs turns fish. I was in Hugo, Floyd and Florence. No thank you to any more.
  11. If any of you would like to, you can watch his service here: https://view.oneroomstreaming.com/index.php?data=MTc1NDMyODYyNzM3NDQ4MSZvbmVyb29tLWFkbWluJmNvcHlfbGluaw== The young lady who speaks first is my daughter. Clearly, I've done well.
  12. As fun as they are to follow, it is no fun to be in the bullseye. Conditions non-conducive to development is A-OK with me. Sorry for you lot in Old Blighty who want to map these buggers.
  13. great time to reduce staff at the NHC and reduce Hunter flights, huh?
  14. My Dad's service was today, and I read a eulogy I prepared. You should all know that I quoted from one of your comments and talked about how important this place was to him. Thank you all.
  15. if any mods can help me dig those up or provide me with them,I know he put stuff up about my races. For selfish reasons, I'd really like to have those posts. Thanks, everyone.
  16. Thanks all. If anyone knows how I can access the old Politics Thread, I'd be much obliged. The current one has no posts at all.
  17. Thanks, everyone. There are three options we have chosen for memorials other than flowers. Leukemia and Lymphoma Society - www.lls.org The Hospital at Home Program c/o Atrium Health Foundation 7800 Providence Rd. Suite 208, Charlotte, NC 28226 Or your local NPR station that plays classical or jazz music. As my Dad would probably point out, all three of these things - cancer research, healthcare coverage for average people of limited means, and the arts and public broadcasting are under assault from some of those bullies that Pop so detested. So your support of any of them would be greatly appreciated.

  19. HA! He was born in Hoboken. If he heard you call him a Southern Gentleman he would have been quite amused.

  21. Thank you, everyone. Wish I could find his posts about politics. May not have wanted to read the ones about me. LOL
