  1. @powderfreakThat's a good deal and I didn't see that this morning when your response got me to go on the stowe website. last year I skied Sunapee/Crotched/Okemo/Wildcat on my NE pass but as I documented throughout last season, my 'go-to' mountain, Wildcat, was disappointing. My 3 days at Stowe were the best skiing of the season.
  2. my 5 day pack at Boyne are any day of my choosing. I'm assuming I need to specify a day to purchase a $69 ticket in advance right now? I use to buy the SBush 4 pack but seemed to never use all 4 tickets. East coast conditions are too variable.
  3. $69 advance purchase out west where the snow conditions are much less variable is probably a chance I would take. I'm hard pressed to purchase a ticket now for mid-march in NE and I will ski in just about anything! as I stated, I moved from the epic pass to the indy pass this year. I already have a six days of skiing planned out west at indy areas. given some of the distances from metrowest boston, I am interested to see the # of days I get in - BEast, Magic, WV, Pat's Peak (night?), Cannon, Black are all day trips. Bolton (day trip viable!) and Jay will probably paired up as back-to-back days. Saddleback, I will combine with SLoaf 5 pack I purchased for something like $60/day. Taking my skis to get tuned tomorrow!
  4. This is no slight on either Killington or Sugarbush - I like each area - but $170-169 is simply unimaginable. This IMO is just another way of saying 'we only want season passholders skiing here.' Or maybe they have deeply discounted advanced ticket pricing.
  5. I was hiking up wachusett and heard it. Didn't feel any shake if ground. It was very audible, made me pause...didn't think of it again until my bro in law mentioned it a few hours later.
  6. I hate leaf blowers. I have a relatively small yard and use rake and blue tarp and drag into the woods behind house, I hate that too. but leaf blower hate > raking hate. I also shovel my snow versus using a snow blower but my feelings about that are much more muted.
  7. swam in winnisquam today for about 10 minutes - water and air temperature were perfection. Water is now turned off.
  8. Attitash was the first big mountain ski area I ever went too - middle school ski trips - 40+ years ago. Never been back since HS. The complaints and perpetual frustration about the lifts at Attitash are real from regulars. I also remember talking to an older ski patroller who worked I believe at BW, Attitash and Wildcat and he was telling me about the standing joke about the 'snow hole' that was Attitash. Flip side is everyone loves the terrain when accessible and open. I have always thought the combo or Attitash and Wildcat worked well. Wildcat as a standalone operation is problematic unless the owner got it for a nickel.
  9. was camping at about 2,600' in the Dry River Wilderness area Saturday nite (spectacular, rugged area) and it was cool Sunday morning. No sign of frost but definitely first hints of Fall - those who had brought their light winter jackets were wearing them! Summited Mt. Isolation Sunday AM - within a few days of when I did it 2 years ago - and the foliage is definitely behind this year. Yesterday was the perfect early Fall day in the high peaks - amazing.
  10. We get out between 6-10 times each winter for downhill. - why not keep on renting for the kids. The adults are different? We get out between 6-10 times each winter for downhill. - given growth of kids that age, think seasonal rentals would still make sense. I would have bought my stuff over the summer sales -
  11. just a patch, probably a bit below normal for July 1. https://www.mountwashington.org/premium-content/webcam-videos/ravines.aspx
  12. storm approaching Meredith NH. The skies dark to the west and light raining falling here. It has been brutally hot/humid and horse flies on the backroads up here have been brutal during my bike rides this week.
  13. That was the week I chose to ski at Sugarloaf for first time...5, 6, 7 runs total that day, bad frost bite on my face each time, was told by the liftie to go into the lodge each time. Such a miserable experience that I didn't ski for the rest of the season nor the next there!
  14. Agree whole heartedly ... if folks truly understood (absorb the impact) the price differentials between not just drugs but hospital equipment - domestic versus foreign and the subsidization that goes on between markets there would be outrage. IMO pricing differently between a developing country and W. Europe/USA/Canada/Japan is completely justifiable and good business - I do alot of pricing work in my job and love to price on the margin - but the differentials between W. Europe and US in many cases is crazy.

    RIP James

This is terrible news and so sad. Way too young. Next winter, storms possibly delivering winter weather to the cape won't be half the fun! Prayers to James, his family and friends.
  16. I don't play golf but a friend told me it is one, if not the best examples of a un-modified Donald Ross course...of course, I have no idea what that means!
  17. On a handful of occasions, when I've been up on the Presidentials at nite in early July, I always pause to look north and enjoy the glow - especially from Adams and Madison.
  18. A word of caution... if you accidently slip and fall into that crack between the two plates, you won't stop until you reach the molten core of the planet. It's scary.
  19. @HoarfrostHubb We ended spending some time in the airport waiting for another party and watching primarily Americans stock up on booze there was pretty sad...until I realized how much it cost outside of duty free! Alcohol is exorbitantly taxed in Norway too. I thought I would be eating seafood all the time but found the restaurants did not to have a ton of fish...I don't remember investigating extensively but figured it was all exported...like you find some coffee growing, less prosperous countries tend to drink a lot crystal, instant coffee! Gas is expensive but you need to go out of your way to rent a large American SUV. I was just speaking about this with a friend, make sure your credit card(s) are PIN enabled.
  20. We did in reverse order - 2018 was sweden and norway and iceland in 2017. flew from Stockholm to Bergen but never entered city, drove from there to Alesund over 5-6 days via Voss, Flam, Jostedalsbreen National Park - spectacular. Oslo is also a wonderful city. Have said here before, would love to go back in winter and spend a few weeks downhill, nordic and ski touring
  21. went for a week in 2017 - spectacular place. stayed in AirBnB everywhere.
  22. Only good thing about this heat is it will warm up the lake for next weekends install of the dock.
  23. Went up to Tuckerman's today and took two runs down left gully which was really the only route down that looked serviceable. Chute had multiple, deep runnels formed by sliding snow. Left gully had sliding snow too but you could ski across it as it was moving down the slope. There were about 50 people in the bowl all together. Hillmans is now disconnected about 3/4 of the way up which is something I always like to ski. There was consistent snowpack in the woods just below the caretaker hut so approximately 3,800'. Assuming that's it for the 2020-21 ski season, a strange one for sure. I weighed my pack when I finished, 40lbs according to the scale, I'm tired!
