Was very cool to see a ton of people out in the local park by my house, just watching. We had good timing with the cloud deck here as it approached maximum. Everything muted, gray, and cool, but still quite bright. A sort of eerie light when you look at the woods or the sky away from the sun and see blue... but it's just not the right shade. Awesome!

Same here, lucked out on clouds.

I'm looking for a batch of native flowering seeds that I can scatter over a 100 x 100 ft area. It's slightly moist, with intermittent sun. Looking to just throw them and see what grows. Any suggestions?

Those are both good suggestions for seed mix sources. I grow flowering native perennials but have never tried a seed mix scatter/meadow approach over a large area. Has anyone? Let us know how it goes if you try it?

  3. I just started a bunch of flower seeds for my annuals pollinator patch. Tithonia (Mexican Sunflower) which I HIGHly rec for anyone who wants to see a lot of butterflies and hummingbirds ..also zinnias (same) which I'm kinda obsessed with and started 10 types. Some cosmos. Also genovese basil, persian basil, flat parsley, dill. I may pop in some cucumbers but they usually break my heart all too soon, aaaaand I'm skipping tomatoes/other again this year.

Yes there are. Every county in the state will get them. The three biggest challenges with this project are finding appropriate locations, coordinating the land use agreements with the owners, and getting good weather to prep the site and deploy the equipment. We just installed the first urban mesonet tower in Baltimore City last week and it was a tough process to get a site that had enough open space to capture the nearby environment appropriately.

Got you, thanks for the additional info. Good luck with all the logistics!

Just give me April 4th clear so we can install a mesonet station in PG county.

EJ, just curious are there plans to put stations in Harford, AA, Calvert, and Cecil? I am guessing so as the map says 52 (!) additional sites planned. Great project, thumbs up.

  6. The plan to clear the channel -

Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, commander and chief of engineers, explained the team will approach the mission in three steps. Here's what they are:

    • Step 1: Get the steel trust out of a 700-foot-wide by 50-foot-deep channel, and examine what parts of the concrete are still at the bottom. "Any piece of concrete, any piece of steel on the bottom is just as much as of a hazard as that in the channel," Spellmon said. This step will allow "one-way traffic going in and out of the Port of Baltimore again," he said.
    • Step 2: Work closely with the Coast Guard to stabilize containers on top of the ship. Then the trust of the bridge that is still on top of the ship needs to be taken off "so it can be tugged to a safe part of the port," Spellmon said. "By removing the vessel, that will allow us to reopen two-way traffic."
    • Step 3: Take out the remaining 2,900 feet of steel and all the associated concrete and roadway that's at the river bottom.

"We're up to this task. We have what we need," Spellmon said.

My observations: It just looked like it was one rickety bridge. Went down easy.

Can't believe they got it on video.

I think I read that the captain of the boat knew that is was out of power and hard to control with plenty of minutes before impact. Why not drop the anchor?

"The pilot immediately ordered the rudder hard to port to keep the ship from turning right and ordered the port anchor be dropped, which it was, Diamond said. The pilot also contacted a dispatch office to get the bridge shut down."

Anyone spot any osprey yet? I've been super busy but haven't seen or heard any so far.

They're here. Not sure exactly as of when but just heard/saw my first one. Being chased around by an eagle.

Yep. I report to work at Fort Belvoir once weekly and try to do a lunchtime walk down to Accotink Bay...have seen a handful of osprey in past couple weeks, and a couple of them have already been hooting at me when I walk near their nesting platforms/poles, which the Army is pretty good about placing all around the bay for them. Of course, they're not averse to building their pterodactyl-like nests at the top of the field lights surrounding nearby baseball/softball fields on post, either.  :)

I had no idea the Army did this and I approve.

edit, I do see some platforms around here (in Armyland lol) but always figured DNR or such

I'm in New Windsor tonight at the fire department and I can hear them over the wind. They definitely are out in force tonight.

I hear them over the wind and just now through a closed window

I, for one, welcome our new peeper overlords.

Trees and daffodils/crocuses have been hammer-down around here for the past two weeks, but the biggest tell was the huge chorus of peepers singing last evening in the wetlands surrounding our neighborhood.

Peeper chorus last night here, too. If it happened earlier I missed it.

I feel like I’m looking at the scoreboard and we’re losing by 50 at the 2 min warning and the coach is saying “it’s ok guys, everything’s fine, focus on the next play”.

As far as this sub...I feel like the majority of posters here are (more or less) on the same page about (many or most) of your most frequently argued assertions and fears. If not in this or that particular analogy, example, illustration etc, then writ large. But maybe I just have a good ignore list!
