  1. The sun was shining again in Williamsport at 7:00p. Montoursville Airport rain seemed low at around .3 so I checked two weather stations in Williamsport on Wunderground at they were .44 and .55. We never did get any lightening after all that earlier thunder. Local TV news is full of reports about Nanticoke and a fair getting hit by strong winds and have some damage. Some power outages in counties in northcentral and NEPA including my own of Lycoming but I do not know where.

We up here will have more rain locally over the next week just like the rest of you but that will be competing for my attention with the already remarkable Hurricane Lee. It will be something if we get any rain or wind from it, even indirectly.

  2. The rain has finally started to fall in Williamsport after more than an hour and a half of thunder but no rain and half dark clouds-half blue skies with white clouds. The lights in the parking lot just came on at 3:25. Still thunder but no lightening -- yet. Air seems so cool yet I see we are at 86, not much of a drop at all.

I still can't believe theres a heat advisory here in September lol

Also I've been fully glued to tropical storm Lee because I'm really into the tropics. Right now I don't think it's anything we'll have to deal with but I saw a few mets and pro forecasters completely writing this storm off like it was guaranteed it wouldn't be a potential issue for the east coast like New England or Canada. I wasn't even going to say anything because it's still way too far out and so much is going to change with this track but already you're seeing the GFS and Euro shifting west and south model run after model run and a couple more of those happening then it could effect the coast. Also this thing has some insane power potential with some intensity models taking it to a category 5 so I'd be just interested in following it for that reason alone

I can tell you guy on Channel 16 brought it up at 11:00p forecast on Labor Day as something that could possibly affect us depending on track. He kind of dismissed it as unlikely but still he brought it up.

I kept seeing things about Lee all day I didn't want to see. And we still have plenty of time for more bad hurricanes this year.

Please, tell us more about the metropolis of Dubois…

The Williamsport-Pittsburgh bus used to stop there when I was going to school in Pittsburgh and the two years I lived there after graduating. I know it did.  I am sure of it. Nevertheless I cannot remember a darn thing about Dubois.

I can remember a bit about Punxatawny, home of Punxatawny Phil the groundhog of course, but who knows if that is really from my bus trips or from seeing the Bill Murray movie they filmed there on TV through the years?

  5. It has been raining with thunder and lightening in Williamsport for a few hours now. Lights flickered briefly and TV switched off but cable box  stayed on. The Weather Channel was constantly sounding off over flood warning & some other things too for about two hours but now I turned to another channel and i am relaxing again without any toots. Yes it is annoying to have local weather interfere with my plans to watch hurricane coverage.

Wow! I looked this HAFS A up and it is new, which most of you probably already knew.

What do you all think about this prediction? It sure isn't what people down there want.

  7. Williamsport report matches the rest of you to our south. We are in a state of breezy perfection: blue skies, 75 and dewpoint of 50. I am very happy for all the locals and out of towners here for Little League. This week's weather has been pretty good for them and next week's 70s will be even better.

Last night we had rain rain rain once the sun went down. We got about 2.5" instead of predicted half an inch or so.

    WGAL is in...

    1) Top gust on Friday is 25

    2) Chamber weekend

    3)  Another fake heatwave next week in the "weakest summer" in many years.  If we get a real summer next year, people may be spoiled by this year.

I know I want another mostly not too hot summer next year and every year, really. I don't have AC so I felt beyond lucky and relieved when that first, truly awful first round of smoky air came our way in early June, I could help myself just by keeping my doors and windows closed.

I could gladly do a cheer: Below average temperatures, Below average temperatures, Yeah!! over that memory.

  9. Funny to read this while watching end of Twister, the ultimate weather geek movie. Either someone has had a bad day or an anti-weather geek managed to get hired at NWS:

SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

As the rain moves away, there won`t be much of a break before showers move back through as the tail end of the storms systemd Drags a short wave across the lower lakes on Tuesday. All of this nonsense moves out for Wednesday with a nice day in store.

  10. I just looked at the 3 day history. Williamsport got a out a quarter inch of rain on the 10th and half an inch yesterday.

Pretty normal but of course we haven't been very normal for a long time on rain. Maybe we will be this fall or in the winter. I first noticed that we were having more sunny days and I was waking up to a lot less of the usual PA grey skies around this time or a bit earlier in 2020. That is a long time to have more sun & less rain.

  11. Sorry if someone else already talked about this. I just saw this at Twitter and knew many year will be thrilled to hear about this upgrade.

"The Department of Commerce and NOAA expanded the capacity of the nation’s Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputing System (WCOSS) by 20% this week. The increased computing power and storage will help improve forecast model guidance for years to come and allow for other weather prediction advances.

“Our investment in high-performance computing will pay off with better U.S. weather modeling,” said Michael C. Morgan, Ph.D., assistant secretary of commerce for environmental observation and prediction. “Forecast model upgrades made possible by this increased computing capacity will bring improved and timely forecasts and warnings that better protect life and property.”

  12. Just saw 11:00 Channel 16 weather. Guy said newest models showing far less rain. His newest rain map showed almost nothing for South East and South Central PA. We in Williamsport got about the highest with .37.  He pointed out that prior future radar was lit up like a Christmas tree with lots of colors. No more. Now just greens, some very pale.

Sorry. Who knows though, maybe things will change overnight.

  13. Off Topic but this article about the heat in Phoenix is great. It has before and after pictures taken with a regular and thermal camera that show just how hot objects are. It is also full of information that I didn't know.

About half of our patients who come in in this comatose state are homeless,' said Dr. Frank LoVecchio at Valleywise Health in Phoenix.

Sometimes people pass out on the scalding pavement, suffering severe burns on their bodies.

With day after day of relentless heat and evenings that remained at 90F, there was little chance for people experiencing homelessness to recover and hydrate.

The heat also worsens conditions like diabetes, lung disease, and heart issues. And some suffer memory loss and cognitive decline.

I have never heard of people passing out and getting burns from the pavement. I wonder how severe they can get. Also never knew that heat makes diabetes worse. These are things to think about when going to hot places and to let friends and family know.

It is so strange to think that overall, I'd say we did better than expected on heat and humidity this year while many others here in US and other places had terrible experiences.

Off Topic #2 - Fire Season: Where is ours? I wondered that before hitting Submit button so I checked. We have not been lucky at all; we just haven't hit it yet. AccuWeather said in April:

    Quote

Peak wildfire season is predicted to occur from August into September in Northern California and September to November in Central and Southern California.

It is during these time frames that the ingredients for destructive fires will culminate. Lightning from the North American monsoon can be a natural ignition source for fires, while winds, such as the Santa Ana winds, which were absent for most of the 2022 season, can fan the flames of ongoing blazes and cause them to evolve rapidly into massive wildfires.

The peak of the wildfire season will align with the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.

We are going to be hearing far more bad weather news than we want to in the next four months and who knows which one one will be worse, the hurricanes spinning up from extremely warm ocean water or the wildfires? We had better not get an Agnes II here!

Chile is a crazy county in that is it is so long.  It is like comparing temps in PA and Florida in Winter.  I think it is normally hot all year in the Northern Chile desert but not sure about the Andes area so would be interesting to hear more about this if anyone has more details.  Did not see much on a quick Google search.

This story got covered by the Washington Post. The comments people left on this Tweet are contradictory and people are arguing a lot. Maybe others will get more out of them them than I did. But by being covered by the Washington Post, more people should be talking about and covering this, which should be a plus for everyone.

  15. I see you all are already talking about heat.

I just saw this on Twitter. Evidently Chile in South America -- which of course is currently experiencing winter -- is having quite a heat wave.

I cannot explain it or understand how it can be but they have had temperatures over 100F! In winter!

I am surprised this wasn't all over the news.

Lots and lots of fires are started by at least human influence if not Aaron. Look at California fire history with there arrests and the paradise fire started by power lines. You can pretty much look at a population density map overlayed with fires and at least have a pretty good idea of the odds are how it started. But fires in the borel forests of Canada are almost purely by lightning. I'm just upset that everything gets political anymore so neuence and details don't matter and it ensures both sides are horrendously wrong in different circumstances. You would appreciate the union fight our forest firefighters are going through right now.

    What union fight is that?

  17. 11:32p Noisy storm with lots of lightening out in Western PA coming our way. Weather guy said it is breaking up and weakening but still looks good enough to make it to Williamsport. If it is mostly just rain with not much show, that is fine by me and I am sure everyone else.

  18. 8:05p: More unexpected rain for Williamsport. In my earlier post what I thought was end of rain was temporary slowdown during training. We had a couple cycles that lasted about two hours. I heard thunder and double checked tonight's weather. We changed from very little or nothing to .42, all supposedly falling between 8:00-9:00. Sunlight is reflecting off ceiling light fixture and I can hear cars travelling over the wet street. Let's see what else we get.

  19. Williamsport and immediate area has been sitting under our own yellow-orange blob for over 45 minutes and it is finally moving away. We had thunder but little to no lightning and about 2 minutes of hail. Going out shortly so I hope this is it until after I get back. We got a lot more than predicted .17.

  20. This was an unexpected surprise I am very happy about. Williamsport's air is almost back to normal. It is the yellow 55 sticking out in northern PA. Rest of the state has to catch up to us. I hope that happens overnight. I wish someone would get a Purple Air device and fill in the big empty space in northern PA and southern NY. chrome_screenshot_1689876898899.thumb.png.2d449457689887bf901d92600b1adb10.png

  21. 6:45p Has been thundering in Williamsport and now I hear some rain. We were supposed to get .25 or less. I saw about an hour ago Wunderground said about .75 and now it is .53. Who knows what we will end up with but at least we are getting something. Based on smoke numbers in Indiana and Ohio, it looks like we will have smoke again tomorrow. I guess when they say Smoke on Monday, we should assume Tuesday and maybe Wednesday too.
