Thanks for clearing that up. I was the thinking it was in 2022 at Canaan. I remembered hearing on the radio that the NWS was trying to verify that the temperature was correct at Canaan, and they ended up settling at -31.

Found this article below. Canaan Valley
Known for its winter activities like skiing and snowboarding, Canaan Valley in Tucker County expects and even welcomes cold temperatures during ski season. This year, it may have gotten a little colder than anyone would have bargained for. On Jan. 22, 2022, Canaan saw record-breaking temperatures and experienced its coldest ever at -31° F.

Already down to -13 there at 8pm.  Will be interesting to see how low it goes tonight.

Just makes you wonder HOW cold it was in that location when the record was set. -27 there this morning. Elkins was -15, Lewisburg -2 and WSS -4. I know you can't correlate exactly, but if all those stations were -28 to -37 on that morning makes you think Canaan would/could have been in -40 to -45 range easy.

My low in town was -15.  The lowest I've ever recorded was -26.3 (maybe around 2011?).  I bet if that site had been there back then it would have hit -40.

-23 at Canaan NWR. A lot of negative teens in WV, WMD, and WPA. 10 imby.

Looks like it bottomed out at -27 degrees this morning.  Within 10 degrees of the state record and we didn't have perfect radiational cooling conditions the whole night as we got about an inch of snow.  That place will break the record sometime soon.

  4. Canaan NWR site had a high of 7 degrees and a low this morning of -18

One of these mornings that site will break the state record low (-37) its just set in a perfect location being in one of the lowest spots of the highest valley in the east.

@jonjon wonder how you've fared today. I'm up to 8.6" so far, but the sun is poking out from behind the clouds so things are winding down from the synoptic system. We should have some more upslope tonight, however. Temp down to 17.8.

Pretty similar here, you might be an inch or so ahead from the synoptic if I had to guess.  We've already transitioned to the upslope, snowing pretty steadily now.  Should get several more inches.

  You had the same issue when I was a guest there way, way back!  I can't recall what winter it was, but I think you walked me back there to see it.

That's the same house you both operated as a B & B, right?

    Yeah, that's the Meyer House

Yeah, the first decade I lived here it seemed to be an issue almost every winter.  Hasn't been an issue for over a dozen years at least.

Holy CRAP. Those are life-ending icicles right there. I'm noticing a fair amount of spouting ice-damming on our rear addition, which (unfortunately) receives little morning or afternoon sun from early Dec through late Feb. But we're certainly not dealing with this. Seriously...do y'all have hard hats if you go out on that back deck to clean up??  :yikes:

I'm not going anywhere near my back deck until March at least

I'm almost at the century mark of 10.0" but not quite.

At least you don't have to deal with monster ice damn bullshit.  I've got a couple of leaking windows that I'm dealing with on top of just keeping a couple of parking spots clear of snow at all times.

The ski areas are on a heater right now. Been a bit since conditions were this optimal. Canaan has reported accumulating snow every day so far this month and is now up to 44.4” on the month and a season total of 91.9”. With more upslope coming this week with the passing of the front, pretty good chance they hit 100” before next weekend.

Been enjoying the cross country skiing.  We need at least a foot on the ground to ski outside of town on the mountain bike trails since its a bit boggy and rocky, so this has been great and appears to stick around for a while and even get better.  Pic is of adventure yesterday with my ferocious goldendoodle
