  1. Sheena is on vacation(Glenn ill) but couldn't they get one of the weekend people to fill in rather than ripping off Doug from DC?

Besides Glenn and a select few (non weather) NBC10 sucks. Once Glenn retires I'm out for weather and news. The station in general is a mess. The only good thing they've done recently is finally shiet-can Renee Chanault after 6+ months "leave" because of her corrupt husband and possibly herself as well. She was horrible...

Sheena is not on vacation, as she is on the early morning newscast for two weeks. I do not work there so not sure what is up, but with Glenn out due to an illness then why don't they just have Sheena cover his slot? Unless Bill Henley who does the early morning newscast is on vacation. Not sure.

  2. Adam always wanted complete power. He certainly had it in this forum. He was easily the most heavy handed moderator i have ever seen at any site. They have their two or three extremely knowledgeable people but they basically talk to themselves all day every day. Who wants a forum like that. Trust me they would love to be back here but can't swallow their pride. It can't be any fun talking to yourself and banning the other three people who dare say anything.

Well then, I learn something new everyday. Sounds like some got their feelings hurt on both sides.

  3. Yes Mike, I recall the incident that probably caused you and most Mount Holly mets to leave this forum. It wasn’t my intention to imply that there have never been any issues.

It sucks for the rest of us who still post here that there is such little red tagger participation. Perhaps if there was, this place would be a little more active. But I can understand the reluctance.

It is not just what happened here though. I do lurk but just do not spend that much time on the forums anymore.

  4. Again, I don't understand why those who spend most of their time at Tom and Adam's site feel the need to come in here and tell those of us who remain that we need to merge with the NYC forum? Why do you care what goes on here if you've essentially left/choose not to participate here?

I wish more mets like Tony, Mike, Ray and Mitch posted here. But they choose not to. I don't know why? This forum has never had a reputation of attacking red taggers the way other others do.

And I'm not trying to turn this into an "our forum vs Tom and Adam's" thing. I lurk there. I just choose to spend more time here and post here instead. So again, what's the issue?

I belong to this site and also the other one, but I do not post that much for several reasons.

  5. I know you all have been wondering about this. :)

This is regarding your forecasts from the "local on the 8's" via The Weather Channel and Comcast as your cable provider (not sure if other providers are doing this as well). Just for kicks, I sent in a question why the location for my "local on the 8's" is not even in the same county. It all comes down to Comcast consolidating equipment areas. At least I got a response from The Weather Channel today, which stated:

"Comcast Cable is consolidating areas within a number of television markets across the country. When a cable company consolidates equipment, they will combine two (2) or more units into one and serve a larger geographical area. We, at The Weather Channel, when notified about the consolidation, will revise the area served data to suit all viewers. The cable company typically picks the forecast point name; in this case it is Audubon, New Jersey.

We are in a partnership with Comcast and are working together to provide the most critical weather data and local forecasts, as well as severe weather alerts for your area. We would encourage you to contact your local Comcast office and provide them with your feedback on this change as we continue to work with them to bring you your local weather forecasts for Mount Holly, Moorestown and Burlington County, New Jersey".

  6. Thanks, I just found it. Yes, that warning is very wrong. I wonder what happened? All those locations are north or well north of the actual touchdown and eventual track. Were they looking at a different area?

The one before that was more correct at 5:39.

I'm not saying it would have mattered either way since the tornado was already on the ground and you could hear it or it was moving through the city.

The one thing that stands out to me in that SVS is that there are two warning headlines at the top. Each warning is seperate (storm-based) so the second one had to be manually added. No doubt that WFO was extremely busy during that time.

  7. typo maybe???? but a typo that COULD i'm not going to blame SGF for the death of 140 some odd people... but it very well could have something to do with people saying they didn't have warning... i don't know.. that's a shocking and a bit scary find there JoMo

Here is the actual warning text, for reference.

  8. I just noticed something. This was quoted from the Severe thread as the tornado was happening. I'm not sure if there are archived tornado warnings somewhere.

See 6 miles NE of Galena?

Now check out the map on this page showing where the first point of touchdown was.

It's actually SE of E of Galena. yikes.png

Glad to hear you are okay. You can obtain archived NWS text products from the site linked below. This archiving started on January 1, 2009. Just select the NWS WFO and the date.

  9. Question for NWS/NOAA employees, what route did you take to get your job? I know it's incredibly difficult to get a government job. But what things can you do increase your odds or to make your resume better?

I started with a college internship at a local TV station while attending SUNY Brockport (B.S. in meteorology and minor in mathematics). Not to long after this ended, a part time job opened there and it was mentioned to me to go ahead and apply since I was just there for an internship. Got the job so worked the early morning shift while still in college, then continued to work there part time after graduating. There was no need for another full time meteorologist at the time at this TV station so I started looking elsewhere. My goal was to work for the NWS some day. That did not happen at first, so I applied to several private sector companies. I was hired by AccuWeather and worked there for 3 years, then got hired by the NWS in 2003. I really enjoy my job and am thankful for it as it certainly sounds like the competition is much greater these days. Sometimes I think that before working for the NWS, one should work for either the media or private sector first to get a taste of that side. I felt it was an interesting perspective by working in the media, private and now government sector. I always tell college students in meteorology to get as much experience while they can while in college. Participate in internships, work on research projects that your professors are involved in, and even take on case studies. All great things to add to your resume.
