  1. As expected, snow showers tapered off overnight.  Low of -2 here at the house, back up to 0 as lake clouds pass through. Should see a bit of an uptick in snow early this afternoon, another inch or two possible.  Gonna spend the day out on the ice and hopefully bring home some dinner.

  2. Measured 4.7 inches so far today on my deck railing.  Brings the total here to 16.2 inches since Tuesday night.  Temp reached 17 for a high at 2 pm and has since fallen to 13.  Squalls have been very impressive. At one point the sky looked as if a thunderstorm was moving in.  Nice mini bout of winter.

  3. Feeling like winter. Forecast high today of 18 with 2-4" of snow possible through tonight after 11.5 inches the past few days.  Ratios have been pretty high, running around 20:1.  Temps should stay below freezing until Tuesday then two days in the mid-30's before a slight cool down.  Forecast low tonight is 3 degrees, if more clearing can occur with the flow shifting westerly, there's a good chance of going below zero for a time.

Yeah I can never live in the u.p. away from my friends and g/f. Also ,the whole point is getting the big dog in your backyard and moving to have to see it ruins most of the satisfaction. Also this whining  and calling out josh is filling in the boring stretch of weather we currently are in.

My post wasn't directed at you.  The banter between you and Josh goes way back.  I find it mildly entertaining. It's the bitching and moaning and having unrealistic expectations for local climo that's annoying, even tho I will admit for parts of the sub, the past few winters have been horrible and I'd likely be the first to complain.

As far as the UP goes, as a kid I dreamed of living here and as soon as I could I did.  It's different and not for everyone, and minus the snow I'd still live here.  I'll probably die here unless at some point I decide to head west or to Alaska.  Mainstream America is NOT for me.

  5. Spring/Summer severe weather enthusiasts have been suffering for many years too, jus sayin.

90% of winters 45 and north have the winter-time nirvana Beavis describes and is just a state or two away.  If winter means that much to someone, as clearly it does, why not move?  It may mean sacrificing a high paying job, lifestyle, and other things but it sure beats spending life miserable.
I packed up everything I had at 22 and did it.  If you want something bad enough, make it happen.  Stop whining.

What do the least snowiest records look like around there? There’s obviously a lot of winter to go there but I would think this winter would be in the running right now.

Not sure area wide,  but here's every winter since 1980 for Negaunee Twp. It's pretty cluttered, but the green shaded area at the bottom is this year. There's been a few clunkers.

I've dm'd the weather office and asked what the least snowy winter on record was there but even that only dates back to 1961.

The graph is a week or so old.  MQT currently stands at 72.6 for the season, average to date is 128.6.

  7. Looking at some stats today, there's finally two stations that have crossed the 100" mark for the season... well behind average.  Herman is coming in 3rd.  I'm estimating my area has seen 80-85" now, which is probably pretty close to accurate as my totals usually come very close to Herman on any given year.  This area still running about 5 foot below average.  Pretty anemic by UP standards.

    Calumet 109.8"

    Keweenaw County 102.8"

    Herman 91.8"

So how are things looking in the UP @weatherbo and  @wishforsnow? Any trails open at all?

I'm sure trails in general are in bad shape like most of the UP but here, off the beaten path, two tracks are still snow covered and wooded areas have between 8-11 inches.  Took these photos yesterday after things froze back up... 9 inches here at the house, but this area had some of the deepest snow in Michigan at the peak of the winter blast with close to 3 feet otg.  Didn't think a winter like this was possible in the UP.  Haven't broken 100 inches yet with the total being somewhere around 75-80 inches imby.

Did received an inch of snow overnight and this morning with temps today more seasonable in the low-20's.  Upcoming clipper pattern can deliver some nice surprises too, but my hopes for deep winter conditions have faded substantially.

  9. I Follow this thread pretty close.  I love mountain weather, it often reminds me of weather near the great lakes where you have all these little nuanced microclimates... really fascinating.  Love all the pictures, keep 'em coming!

I'll share one from up this way... my road this morning.  Painfully slow start to winter but it's finally here.  Around 55 inches month to date.  It's currently 7 degrees in the hills 8 miles from the shore of Lake Superior, skies have cleared and it's beautiful.

  10. West flow has kept things pretty quiet around here with just some flurries and light snow at times.  WWA issued tonight and Friday for up to 8 inches locally, some models indicate quite a bit more but we'll see.  With LE there's always surprises.

Lowest temp here at the house during this cold spell was -14 Tuesday morning.  The coldest daytime high was 3 degrees, same day.

That hurts just looking at. How long have/did you have blizzard conditions?

    You'll be fine.

I'd say roughly 12 hours of solid blizzard conditions.  Things have waned considerably.

  12. Went out long enough to collect eggs, measure, and snap a couple pics.  It's been snowing like hell for about 24 hours... another 3-5 possible before the flow backs more unfavorably.

Estimating a little over 2' has fallen with a snow depth approaching 30 inches.
