I know I lucked out on 12/26 while it somewhat disappointed many nearby, so I'm probably in my own little world talking about this storm..lol. I'll tell ya....the one thing that I'll remember about 1/12 was how Logan was 33F (even 34F for a brief time iirc) with S+. That is very difficult to do for a prolonged period. A true testament to how heavy that band was, but also having cold temps just off the deck limits melting too. I came back to a Tip blue bomb classic, when I left work. Quite impressive.

Oh yeah for us it hurt other than near BOS and points sw, but I was thinking more in the broader sense of the northeast in general. 12/26 wasn't compact in that sense, but it had the perfect ingredients in the mid levels to hammer NJ and up into Pete's area. It kept that core of precip very close to the low center, which is what I was thinking of. Jan 12th and 27th both had the mid level lows tucked in perfectly for us..almost better for NYC once again on Jan 27th.

The DS in many of the storms strangely always ended up pretty close to PVD-TAN-PYM...give or take 10 miles or so. Each storm did track close to the Cape, but very similar placements with the DS. What compact bombs we had. I normally don't like seeing models come so close with the DS, but those mid level low ended up developing rapidly and pinched all that off. Great inflow getting caught up in these circulations as well. This was the winter of mid level lows. Dec 26th, Jan 12th, Jan 21st, and Jan 27th all were nice compact mofos.

Radar matched up pretty well with DS depicted. Notice that heavy band right on the leading edge of the DS. This is a common phenomenon in storms as the DS can cause that narrow swath to become unstable.

Interesting you brought that up. I was just talking to someone about that tornado and they mentioned the controversy of that tornado.

BTW, getting back to the warning system and whether or not it's adequate..I heard a story from silver lining tours. They almost got caught in Joplin when the tornado hit, but quickly tore ass out of there before it came into town. They warned everyone going west into Joplin to turn around...that a tornado is coming. Many just laughed and headed right into Joplin. It just goes to show you people sometimes will never believe warning. There are stories from other instances where sirens went off and people called dispatchers saying..."well I don't see it..." It's human nature. People get complacent when warning after warning goes off and a tornado never happens. They hear a siren and if they go out and don't see it...it doesn't exist. Of course many know to take warnings seriously, but there will always be a large part of the population that just doesn't get it. We have all these things now...Tornado warning...tornado emergency...heck most people don't even know what the difference is between a watch and a warning.

Wow, look at that. The fact that the asphalt above the piece of wood didn't blow out, is a testament to how fast the piece went into the curb. That's incredible.

Whether it's a tornado warning or emergency...people should take cover. I don't see how you can justify not needing to take cover..just because it's not a tornado emergency. That decision logic is flawed...just take cover.....period.

I can't believe how many casualties this took...yet again. Just an awful, awful year.

My co-worker and I were noting the same thing from a pic of the Tuscaloosa tornado. There was no rain to be found anywhere near the tornado....that's something you see in the Plains...pretty rare for that part of the country. Part of this can likely be contributed to the incredible shear as well...keeping the rain away from the tornado.

Forbes was pretty telling on NBC. He described what he think could be spots of EF5 damage as he flew over Tuscaloosa.

This is a good point. We've seen some instances...I think even in the previous outbreak in AL and NC where homes were severely damaged, but then you had clues to more EF1 damage, like mailboxes which were untouched. Even EF0 tornadoes can overturn cars. It's not just the horizontal velocity of the wind, but you have vertical motions that can combine to overturn a car.

Those storms along nrn AL seem to be taking in all that helicity from the retreating cold pool acting like a warm front.

Yeah the whole thing just seems to have lowered to the ground. Incredible.

Folks on ABC33 are playing this out very nicely. They did a good job in the outbreak a couple of weeks ago, as well.

We had the shear in the NC outbreak, but now we have the CAPE for violent updrafts to help facilitate the development of strong tornadoes. This is the result, folks.

I knew the Iowa state radar page that showed the national mosaic, but I didn't know you could get single site archive imagery like that. That's fantastic!

Thanks man..that's it. There's a NAM simulated radar map a couple of pages back that's an in-house product. I know because I did a screen capture, and it got my initials in a GUI that I use..lol.

I mean after 07z when that dryslot approached. I want to see how it filled in, because it got close to DCA. Looking at that , you can see how your area through Phin's hood got crushed. Incredible. LOL at the image of the NAM that Ian saved. Those were a few of the weenie products I posted.

Any of you guys have radar after 2:12 am?? I want to see how that dryslot filled in.
