Jerry, Dec 2007 gridlock,storm? Plenty of notice, people were still dumb. I know there were other factors. And the road thing was just a tiny piece of that storm. The coastal impacts were the biggest IMHO. 40+" of snow, hurricane winds well inland, collapse of power grid! many structural failures also an issue. Lots of people dying from trying to shovel too But you know all this. I just get wound up.

Ryan, in the first video you had a swath of 10-15" Did you want to go higher? Are there forces that keep it in check?

Right, but my school missed the 2 weeks, the vacation, then more...probably at least another weekAnyway, a dear friend of mine (who passed away in 2010), taught in Harvard Public Schools during Feb 1969. They missed over 3 weeks (including the vacation) that year

Actually longer out of school for me... over 3 weeks! From The Foxboro Reporter: "It would be three full weeks before the students would return to school. It took two weeks to clear the school grounds and clear snow from the buildings. But it was further decided to leave the April vacation in place as planned. State law mandates 180 days or 900 hours of school. Foxboro had a longer school day than most towns, and only had to extend the school year by one day to satisfy state requirements. For students in the former Lewis School on Mechanic Street, it would be even longer before they got back to their regular classrooms, as the school roof collapsed under the weight of the storm. Repairs were delayed when it was realized that changes made during construction had dropped the roof below state safety standards, so students would be temporarily housed in the Igo School Administration Center, now Igo Elementary School, displacing several town and civic agencies that also shared the space." I missed at least 2 weeks (probably more like 3) due to the Blizzard of 78 My school's roof caved in.

It's not the best book, but it gives some cool anectodal stuff. Very little met info. Some people we know are quoted

At least in the metro-Boston area I disagree. AWD doesn't help if the roads are full of stuck semis, etc. But the weekend thing, maybe. Also, today the forecast might have kept more people at home Plows are not much different than they were back then.

Yeah, I was living in Lowell and it was certainly a fun storm.But to get 35"+ like they probably did here would be top 5 for sureI think Lowell had 18" or so

These could be the longest lasting snowpiles I have seen in a while. 1978 had piles into June near me (snow farm at the Foxboro Company parking lot), so that was 5 months or so.The October snow could make it that long...hard to say. A wet torch could kill that

Hard to say. There were still small piles of it in the local Walmart in Gardner in January. Those piles are now under piles formed during Jan 12, etc. No way to prove it though

October was really cool for me, but just a big powder bomb. Top 10 event due to lots of snow and top 5 for me due to weirdness. But very little impact here. Roads were drivable the next day, no power loss. My top storms were 1978 by a lot 2008 Ice storm April 1997 2005 Oct 2011

I suppose the most disturbing incident came the other night. I walked into the bathroom, and he was sitting on the toilet, clutching a winter storms book, rocking back and forth, and speaking quietly but quickly in what almost seemed another language. After hearing a few repetitions I determined that he was saying, “If Will throws in the towel, it’s over.” This made me guffaw.... my wife gave me strange looks
