  1. It's crazy how expensive building supplies are now. 2x4's have skyrocketed in price and are like over $6 each now at the local lowes. That's for just regular non pressure treated ones

Home Depots and Lowes around here are cleared out. Had to drive all over to find exterior decking screws yesterday.

According to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, lumber prices increased by 14.9 percent from July to August. Lumber prices have risen almost 50 percent since April 2020, marking the largest four-month gain in the history of lumber price data.

Agree, shaping up for a stunner for you guys under that cirrus with western edge clear...great recognition Gene.  Could see it all day over in NH from Mansfield.

I was working right under the western edge all day. It was like a perfectly straight edge across the entire sky.

We heat it as well with a Heat Storm portable infrared WiFi heater. Controlled onsite or remotely by phone app. I highly recommend these heaters. We actually turn off our electric heat in the main cabin when gone and just use a couple of these in the areas of the house with water to protect.

You should install a mini split.  You would get 4 times the heat for the same electricity consumption.

  4. I got rid of oil and went solar with heat pumps but I saw a billboard this morning for $1.29/gallon heating oil. A friend stocked up on pellets as he thinks it's cheaper but when I crunched the numbers for him it was almost double the cost per btu. Propane here is almost triple the price per btu compared to oil.

Efficiency maine has a cool fuel calculator you can compare with.

Where about's is that? I actually don't know Branford quite well lol. I basically just know the road from about exit 54 to exit 55.

Its right off route 1 on Chestnut St. The road loops around back to route 1. Also, take a ride on Brushy Plain Rd. Right at the pond on the upper left is Branfords highest point. The road goes over it. There is a ton of damage up there.

Down in Branford for the firs time since last Thursday...wow. I usually get off exit 14 on 91 and go back roads from Wallingford through North Branford then into Branford and holy crap...literally every single house I passed had piles of cut up trees, limbs, branches on the curb. The Dunkin Donuts I go to had a huge clearing of trees in the back too. Even the trees not taken down the damage to them is evident...tops severely damaged or even some trees with a good amount of leaves ripped off.

Go take a ride around the Branford supply ponds. Insane damage there.

A few years ago we got our house completely re-insulated and sealed plus all new lightbulbs for free through the MassSave program.

they also gave us a no interest loan for a new furnace. People should definitely take advantage of these programs while they are active. I wish we could’ve taken advantage for the great solar programs in Mass but our yard has a few too many trees.

Yeah the New England states have some crazy generous incentives. Massachusetts has the best solar incentives in the nation. The rebate is so big the payback is only 5-6 years.

I filled out the form to get it started. I think you’ve said previously to do the audit, right? Let them assess, make on site improvements at no cost, then provide a quote for their recommendations...

Yeah. They will come in and check over your whole house and do minor work like air sealing cracks, install weather stripping, etc. At the end they give you a report and show you all the rebates and costs to do further work.

The blower door test they will do is cool. They pressurize your house with a big fan to see how much air leaks in/out. That's where you lose the most energy. They guy said some people's older homes are so leaky its like having a 5 by 5 wide open hole to the outside.
