Anyone have photos of wooly worms or persimmon seeds from this year? How about a count on how many morning of fog you had at your house in August, lol. I am writing a few articles on my website Ashevillewx.com detailing the various winter folklore that mountain people use. I would love to get a few quotes from you all regarding what your parents/grandparents used to say, and what you hear folks speaking of now. Thanks in advance for any help!
Our deer have had their winter coats for about three weeks now in and around Wolf. Looking through my photos, it was just about this time last year that their coats started changing. They also seem to be thicker than last year too, but with all the lush vegetation from the rains that's not a surprise. And we have wooly worms everywhere...but we did last year too, so I don't know what to make of that.
I'll send you a couple pics on FB messenger. Hope that helps!

Yeah I am finalizing my plans to head back home now. As it goes with HR things are never done quickly enough. My moms cancer came back and I need to be back home. I hate I'm going to miss this event. There are a lot of changes that can continue down the road. Nothing is set in stone currently but if it moves south and keeps that moisture fetch off the Atlantic and the mountains are in the Northeast side of this thing then we could be seeing flooding like we did in 2004. Especially since the mountains have seen so much rain already this year. Isn't Asheville in second with precipitation totals so far for the year?
Best wishes for your mom, my friend.

Why not just live above 4000ft in nc?
That's what I did. 20 years of Columbia SC summers is enough. Now I live at 4400' and never reach 80°.

A rainy, 56° morning here in Wolf. Definitely feels like fall.

I see 40's for overnight lows on the way midweek. It'll be nice not to wear the air for a few days.

I hope that you all don't mind me dropping in but I'm wondering how the weather is looking for Asheville next week, though it sounds a lot like it's been here the past few weeks. Anyway, we've never been there and have heard great things so we are hoping to get down before the summer passes by. Any tips on day hikes and breweries would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Check out the Art Loeb trail, you can't go wrong. You can also take the Parkway South of town to Mt. Pisgah ( when you get here look SW of the city and it's the mountain towering over everything with the TV tower on it.). There's a short trail that leads to an old lookout tower that you can climb most of the way up on. The view is unparalleled. Also the arboretum is great but you have to pay for admission. And breweries... That depends on your beer preference. If you enjoy IPAs I favor New Belgium or Highland. Wicked Weed is okay, but it's real touristy. If you like sour beer then Greenman is the place.

I'll take anything close to what I got last winter up here.

Back in the hills for a week to check on things. It's been years since I've seen things so lush. The mountains look amazing right now. Late July and every branch, creek, and river at full flow. Everyone's garden is beautiful. I saw a cow grazing in chest high grass. You guys are doing a great job taking care of things this summer.
Welcome back temporarily! It's been like living in a rainforest this summer! I've never seen so many fireflies.

Rainy morning and 55° up here in Wolf. I'm ready for leaf season.

I see the GFS showing some spots of blue in the favored nwf areas around next Tuesday. I have zero faith in it happening, but it sure is nice to see a cooler pattern on the way!
