  1. We had that NW flow that ended up totaling about 5”, but it was over such a long period that it may not have even been advisory level. Other than that, a couple bands that swing through and left 2-3”. This has been the worst lake effect season in years here. Fingers crossed we get something decent before the freeze-up.
  2. The NYC posters aren’t so bad, I’d rather see NE Connecticut in the screw zone.
  3. What did Tim get? He seemed pretty optimistic last night.
  4. Btw.. that little cabin area just north of Southwick Beach may be my favorite spot on Erie or Ontario (outside the Thousand Islands which are a different thing altogether). Does anyone know where I'm talking about? Great beach, facing a few degrees S of due west so a stunning sunset every damn day, and a breeze that keeps the bugs away (except for very early in the morning). I'd buy there in a second if it weren't such a far drive from Buffalo.
  5. On the one hand I'm really sympathetic. Perfect diction isn't something most of us do or practice at, and accidents happen. On the other hand... good, clear diction and accurate speech is an essential part of an on camera job like that. I see way too many "B" newsreaders, sports anchors, and on camera mets who are marble-mouthed. Besides being important to professional presentation, clear diction prevents errors than can turn off a significant part of the viewership. Viewers have choices, and who wants to watch the station with the guy who slips up and makes an on air slur? Why should it be on the viewers to determine his intention? Especially if you're a member of the group being slurred. (Bad diction is still preferable than the on camera airheads who say insane garbage while segueing between stories or bantering with other on camera talent.) To me, the best approach would have been to pull him off the air for a week or two, until things cool down, but require flawless diction going forward. Local stations are famously cheap, though, and they might have decided that they couldn't afford to have a met not pulling his weight for a couple weeks. Or, as people suggest, maybe they were looking for a pretext to can him, and he was already on his last chance. In any case, I imagine it was accidental, and I feel for the guy, but speaking clearly on air is a crucial skill for that position.
  6. I have a friend with a cabin right on the beach just north of Southwick Beach State Park, and they actually get a lot of snow - it has been in their family for many years, and is winterized, but most winters they have to ski/snowshoe in because of multiple feet of snow. I'm sure they get a small fraction of the snowfall 5-10 miles to the east, but they get their share.
  7. Yeah, that's bonkers - we had more than that in NE Buffalo (about 2.5"), and we were never under a well-organized band for any substantial period.
  8. We have a Subaru Forester and a Honda Fit, both with four season tires. The Honda is light and can slide a bit on turns if there’s ice or if there’s more than about ten inches of unplowed snow. The Forester has never given us a problem in any weather, but we’re not going chasing on the Tug with those tires. Winter is the best, but I love a cool fall as well. I lived in the south for many years, and I can’t stand humid weather with the temp above about 78. Hot and dry is ok, but last summer, while not as bad as the south, was so unpleasant for long stretches that we avoided doing much outside other than the bare minimum of yard work.
  9. I don’t do drugs or drink so I don’t plan to take advantage of legalization of weed, but I support it 100%. It’s stupid that it has been illegal and it has given a lot of regular people criminal records that ruin their lives. And it really enraged me that some prosecutors and police want it to stay illegal because it gives them probable cause for searches, and because they can hang drug possession charges and convictions on people they don’t like. My only concern is drugged driving, but that happens now anyway. And I don’t have any problem with taking licenses and cars and freedom away from people who drive under the influence of any drug.
  10. True. My in-laws did get bullseyed by the November storm, with 80+ inches (without drifts, I stood on top of a 6 foot fence post and the snow was still almost to my knee). That was unreal.
  11. Yeah, this was in Gardenville near Northwood Elementary. Don’t get me wrong, the snow on the ground was better than our dusting of mood flakes in the city.
  12. That’s amazing - we got to West Seneca around 3 and there was an inch at most, and it was already melting. Did it only hit the far southtowns?
  13. Buffalo would have been buried but for that sheer. Same problem we have had for years - everything looks ready to go, and then the bands get blown apart and lose strength. Kind of ridiculous that we’re celebrating a 6” event, but that’s the way it has been recently.
  14. Thundersnow in NE Buffalo! The band is so skinny, though, that I don’t expect this will be around long.
  15. KBUF suggests that shear is going to be a big factor in limiting this storm, which has been the case with basically all Buffalo metro storms in recent years.
  16. Bullseye downtown to Sloan, at 10:1 that’s over a foot
  17. Actually, this one played out pretty much just like the summer. The line weakened dramatically as it came off the lake, and instead of serious convection and lightning, all we got was a brief shower.
  18. We had about 6 inches as well. High water content, closer to cement than to powder.
  19. It looks ugly for the near southtowns. I’m only a little more optimistic for downtown through the northtowns.
  20. We've talked about buying a cabin around Bear Lake - probably a couple years away. I would definitely want to winterize it and hang out there in the winter, and ice fish.
  21. Been snowing for a couple hours at UB north, but nothing is sticking.
  22. I’m originally from Nashville, so I know the tornado outbreaks well! There’s nothing up here as insane as the large scale tornado outbreaks they get in the southeast. But huge lake effect events can be stunning, and there is always the possibility of devastating ice storms that cover a wide area — but that has also been known to happen in KY and TN.
  23. Are you active duty? Sounds like you were at Ft Campbell and got PCS orders to Drum. Anyhow, welcome - I’m in NE Buffalo and if this winter is like recent history you’ll hear a lot of me bitching about IMBY <1” forecasts a lot.
