Were you there for Gloria? My dad is from North Babylon and suffolk got hit really hard wind damage (wind was worse than Sandy according to him). Not sure but I think the Nassau Suffolk border was also the border between who got hurricane force winds and who didn’t on LI. I’m only 21 so Sandy is the worst storm I’ve ever witnessed
Eye of Gloria went right over NB. I was 8, I’ll never forget it.

Subtropical day here…80/73…on September 23
It’s disgusting out…again. Thank god there’s a breeze. I hate wishing warm weather away, but I am tired of sweating.

Some scenes from the aftermath of the flood in Mamaroneck. The air hangs thick with the smell of oil and gas. There are rancid odors of decaying material and rotting food in may parts of the flood-stricken area. If one looks at the last shot, one sees a chair caught high in the vegation with the muddy waters of the Sheldrake River down below in the right lower portion of the photo. The chair is approximately 15 feet above the river. The ice machine resting near a marked parking spot was swept nearly one-third of a mile to its resting place.
Many people have had their lives altered by this event. Businesses ranging from Bilotta (kitchen and cabinet store) to a gym that had to dispose of its treadmills were adversely impacted. Bilotta suffered a total loss of inventory (as occurred during the April 2007 flood), but this flood encompassed a larger area with the waters rising much more rapidly. Outside of Mamaroneck in Harrison, there was an ongoing search for a missing vehicle that was reportedly swept into the adjacent reservoir during the height of the storm.
Taking damage photos is among the worst aspects of storm photography. It is also part of the story. The human story behind the images is far more important than the actual images. That aspect should not be lost.
My kid has a soccer game at Manhattanville College tomorrow and I was thinking of stopping at Half Time in Mamaroneck on the way home and I saw the building is still flooded and indefinitely closed. DeCicco’s in Larchmont has been closed since the storm too. Crazy. The picture the store put on it’s IG page is nuts.

Yeah the crazy thing is this was just the remnants of a storm barely energized by a trough and we still got Floyd like rains.
It lasted maybe 6hrs.
What will happen when a strong hurricane actually impacts us directly.
I used to think if the real deal came up the coast, I could board the house up and get the hell out of dodge (like upstate NY or somewhere well inland) but with the way things have gone the last decade, I really don’t know where is safe anymore. I said it last night, but this region…anything can happen. Literally, anything.

Thanks as always. As someone who’s lurked for a long time, your threads have been beyond helpful and your information, so detailed. I know if I see a thread you’ve started, to stay on notice, and that is so helpful for people like me who have a somewhat rudimentary understanding of weather but nowhere near the knowledge to fully grasp what may (and can) happen days in advance. This subforum, in general, seems to have some really useful mets/posters but I know if I see it’s a “Walt” thread, we’re in trouble,

eastern maybe, western long island has gotten a lot of heavy rain especially tonight
Exactly. Looks like we’re in for another 2 solid hours of off and on pounding thunderstorms. Everything off the ocean looks like Wantagh to Islip.

Long Island will be relatively unscathed compared to the City on west.
Yeah I’m in SW Suffolk. I feel lucky, so far.

I can’t believe I’m typing this but this may be the worst Metro event since Sandy. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my area continues to dodge a bullet. I don’t think the true scope of what’s happened tonight will come to light until tomorrow and the following days either.

Lol phone blowing up again. FF warning until 2:30 now. I want to go to sleep so bad, but this is insane.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see some spin ups east of New Haven with that radar over the Sound. I don’t know if you allow cursing but holy shit, just dark ass red everywhere.

And, an absolute horrible way to go. In your own car?

Sandy submerged most of the subway system with salt water which also fried the electronics. This won't be as bad. But still a devastating flood situation for some. Some of these Gulf systems have a crazy "Part 2" in the Mid Atlantic or Northeast like Camille in VA. This is clearly Ida's "Part 2".
Some of the signals east of the East River outside the LIRR tunnels still haven’t been fixed (it would take months of repairs, non-stop) and the L took serious salt water too. They may never fully recover from that.

Wow. Bad here right now. I don’t know if the winds have shifted but west side of my house is getting pounded right now. Windy too.

Looks like LI escaped
We’re getting a condensed version but we’re about to get the worst. The last 30min have been bad. Sucks not being able to see it.

Looks like South Shore, Wantagh east is about to get socked. That line coming off the ocean looks bad. Pouring and gusting here like crazy already.

well that storm was awesome because it lasted long enough to be both a night time and day time storm, some of the highest rates were during the day
Definitely helped I had a few high gravity beers before I went out that night. It’s different with the rain because I have poor lighting to begin with in my front yard. Lol, also no desire to go out in this deluge.

thats the only thing, I really wish this happened during the day
I hate night time snowstorms too
I don’t know. I want to say it was 2016, but I was told I had no work and it was a legit blizzard and I went out (with my German Shepherd) to shovel like 2am and it was one of the most exhilarating nights of my life. Somehow it was harrowing and peaceful all at once. There was no one out and I just let the snow hit me in the face for a few minutes.
