  1. 38mph peak gust.  Looked worse on the cameras.
Loud booms, no real close lightning. (at the house)
Was driving through first cell that popped up just south of Jarrettsville and had a really close bolt.  Did not see the bolt but the inside of my truck lit up like a 100 joule flash gun was fired and thunder accompanied simultaneously.  Felt it in my back like a subwoofer was playing.  Got home a few min later and it sounded like Forest Hill was getting bombed!  Probably the best sounding thunder since August 18, 2017 here.

  2. The insects are way ahead of schedule here.  I heard annual cicadas at the end of June (typical  is mid to late July) and last night the Katydids were singing loudly like they would be the first week of August.  Fireflies began to peak the first week of June!  It's been warm but not bloody hot.  Yes the heat Sat will be the first really HOT weather we've had here since, well 2012.

Thanks.  It was pretty funny that I thought the storm was going north into your area, and then instead, it expanded south.  And even funnier that I downplayed it until all heck broke loose.  It kept intensifying as it went east of me and I hear the White Marsh and Perry Hall got hit pretty bad, and maybe even a tornado in Perry Hall?

For me, my biggest concern is that I had just finished brewing and was putting the beer in the fermenter when the storm hit.  I use an old chest freezer to control my fermentation temperature, and without power, it's a little tough!  Beer concerns > property concerns.

Pick up a cheap 5kW genny.

And the rule is your lights never go out after you get one!
Just like it never snows after you buy a snow blower! ;)

  4. Nice quick thunderstorm moved through.  A few close strikes, pea to marble sized hail and a 37mph gust.  Over in the wink of an eye.  We're in the yellow box but no official severe which is typical.  TBH, I don't mind.  I'd rather spend my evening on the deck enjoying a beer rather than firing up the tractor and chain saws! :P

Lots of lightning just to my north . Probably slip to my east . Mappyville towards Harford most likely will see something.

Seeing the lightning and winds picked up out of the north peaking at just under 30 mph.  No rain and thunder barely audible at this distance.
Went out to check about an hour ago and TBH the most enjoyable thing was the incredible amount of fireflies!  They're everywhere.  Usually don't see these numbers until the last week of June.  Of course last year the latest we saw them was October 7 which in its own was very unusual.  The last time we saw them that late (end of Sept) was 2009.  Was hoping to see a repeat of 09-10 winter but we all know how that went! LOL

Activity seems to be waning.  Pity.  In this area nocturnal storms can be surprisingly intense.  Anyone remember the band that cut through central MD back in 1987?  From up here it looked like WWIII broke out.  And our friends north of York said the lightning was so bright it woke them up.  Those storms were in the Annapolis area.  Very tall anvils.  Sky was clear overhead.  Love how bolts appear to shoot sideways out of those thunderheads and twist like barbed wire.  I was talking to friends that lived in Perry Hall and they couldn't believe how bright the lightning was and thought it was peculiar that there was no thunder.

  6. I am in the middle of the Harford warn box.  Absolutely no severe, winds near calm with moderate rain.  100s of lightning strikes this past 30 minutes within 10 miles and nice rumbling thunder.  The heaviest activity was or is occurring to our northeast.  Talk about being fringed.  Looks like some training setting up.  This is great tent sleeping weather but there may be too many CG strikes to be comfortable with that!

I think I'm going to have to eat some crow and acknowledge that the Columbia picture is legit, although I'm not going down without complaining about the panoramic distortion.

Back to storm threats, I'm keeping an eye on late Sunday.     NAM nest is inconsistent with timing, but some cells may develop nearby on some sort of lee trough feature, and then a line may approach during the evening.    Deep layer shear (no directional shear, though) and instability would support some damaging wind threat.

Newer smartphones have a wide angle lens.  I have a Galaxy S10+ and the wide angle capture is quite impressive in that regard.

Tons of damage here in Columbia. Took a ride back to my old neighborhood because I saw the worst of the velocities pass over and found trees into houses and many roads impassable due to several massive trees across the road. Trying to upload some pictures as I was let inside the house before it was officially condemned. This was by far the best storm in fairly recent memory - possibly since  the derecho.

Got a text from a friend leaving his office near Ellicott City.  He sent me a pic of the ramp at 32 and 100 with a tree blocking everything except the shoulder.  Looks bad.  Stay safe out there!  Lots of trees can still fall after the storm, been there done that!

We “lucked” into another one at the moment- more torrential rain. We really really don’t need this.

Ditto for us.  Nice T&L.  This along with the spring peepers makes for nice sleeping weather.

  10. Haven't had strong winds out of the south for a while.  By strong I mean 55-60 mph 3 seconds.  My front door faces south and has a weather stripping under the bottom that sings loud like someone playing a kazoo very badly.  It's quite hilarious.  I was getting excited Sun night when it was getting close to 40 but no cigar. ;)

Thanks everyone. Putting it on a post or on the roof isn’t an option unfortunately, but I can better anchor it in my backyard. Appreciate the suggestions.

Rohn 25G tower.  The anemometer needs to be 33' AGL. ;)

  12. Yes for us MOD is rare.  I do remember back in 1998 we got clobbered with baseball sized stones.  We were in the hatched area but didn't get the damaging winds they got to the north and west.  But those hailstones are damaging enough.  Marbles with the occasional golf ball mixed in is OK.  Once they get tennis ball sized it's not fun any more.
