it's bright and sunny here hopefully this storm is getting the boot now, it needs to go, it's overstayed its welcome and now it's time for sunshine and dry

Raining again here..basically 20 mins of sunshine and a downpour develops. Same cycle repeats all day.

Actually its partly sunny with mod rain now. Very FL type day.

The dense tree growth over the ASOS could be affecting the rainfall measurements in addition to the high temperatures. Notice how the new hourly record set with Henri was lower than all the other ASOS stations.

    Hourly rainfall records

    NYC…..1.94….8-21-21

    JFK…..2.88….7-31-96

    LGA….2.44….7-15-97

    EWR…2.35….7-21-06

    ISP……5.34….8-13-14

The temperature readings gets alot of criticism but wind direction, speed and to some extent rainfall obs havent been great there either.

Haven’t been following this one too closely and being at my parents house in Monmouth County we didn’t really get much.

That said I need to take the parkway or turnpike north to Westchester County NY today. Think I should be ok to depart here around 10am?

For now portions of the Hutch, and most of the Saw Mill pkwy is closed. Bronx River pkwy is closed past 233rd st to White Plains

I couldn’t get a good picture of it with my phone, but the moon looks absolutely gorgeous right now, it’s very comfortable out and not a breeze to be felt. If you had told me this even just 24 hours ago I would have said you were crazy.

Yeah I was suprised to see it but it sure is bright, with thin clouds racing by in front

I tried to get by the Bronx River near Gun Hill, but its pouring so relentlessly I gave up. I remember after Irene it was maybe the highest levels I ever saw, at the current rate this will probably reach or exceed that but I dunno if upstream is getting as much rain as the city to add to the runoff down here. Some of the parks along the parkway got covered in several feet of water back then.

I think that has allot to do with the fact that it’s not being forced up the coast after a Carolina hit later in the season via a trough. That scenario always seems to really degrade storms.
Regardless of direct impact, days of large swells will cause beach erosion and lead to beach closures right during prime beach season.

Its been a kinda tough season..everytime I try go to beach its cool/rainy, or warm but water closed for shark sightings. Sun I'll be at the 5 boro bike tour, been counting on good, mostly dry weather but it's looking more iffy??

I think what makes this summer feel less hot  is the constant breaks we've had.  The heat waves while impressive have been short lived.  We had the very cold Memorial Day weekend even though technically not summer cool 4th of July weekend  and then 2 cool weeks from late July into the 1st week of August.   the hot summers I remember is the relentless  90゚ heat from late June into early to mid August before we get that 1st refreshing cold front.  And those hot summers were usually dry too.  This year it's 3 or 4 hours of nineties with 100゚ heat index before a thunderstorm cools things off late afternoon

Yeah more breaks from the heat than in recent memory. Doesnt have to have alot of 90s but the relatively high amount of below 80 highs and some days mainly in the 60s all day hurt the perception to some people. There was a few deceptive midnight high temp days that were actually very cool for summer. Also lots of rain in July.  Early heat in June adjusted people to extreme heat, then run of the mill warm days dont hit the same after.  I wouldnt call it a cool summer, but I get how it could be perceived that way, at least east of the hudson.

This is true. In fact I read somewhere you could squeeze the entire human population into Texas alone.

Everything you said about cities vs rural/suburbs is also true.

The fact people travel hours everyday just to get to & from work is insane and very bad for the environment.

The new Census data show urban population is growing rapidly in the US while rural pop continues to decline. We are an increasingly urban nation in terms of where people live. Southern and western cities are growing the most, some places with limited water supply as someone pointed out here earlier. But still NYC is now up to 8.8 million and Westchester County passed 1 million for the first time ever, thanks in part to Yonkers, now the 3rd largest city in NYS, passing Rochester

Overall population growth is the slowest its been in a long time which isn't a good thing, but its trending much more toward cities.

  9. I heard it was a crazy scene at Orchard Beach yday. That storm came through with little warning, wasnt really a period of dark skies developing first, just rapidly from fair skies to thunderstorm. Multiple lightning strikes on the sand sent ppl abandoning their belongings. Unfortunately the teenager in that group of 6 died.

  10. High 97 till t storm raced in right now, down to 91 heavy rain, windy, lots of lightning.

Spent a week in FL and I acclimated to it so this heat kinda feels just run of the mill lol. Its never above about 92 there but dew points permanently 77 - 79 makes low 70s dewpoint feel slightly refreshing.

Interesting to hear, they have likewise just really begun to be heard here in NYC Central Park. I've only seen one thus far on my daily walks, but there are scattered individuals audible as well.

There is nothing like the 'brood of the century' hype that was widely posted in the media. In fact, thus far it is a pretty spotty performance, even compared to last year.

The ones we hear now are the run of of mill cidadas that are around every year in mid to late summer.  I read somewhere the much hyped, 17 yr cycle ones are not very prevalent in/around NYC anymore for whatever reason. Increased development, espcially in the suburbs probably. Every new sprawling condo complex or houses and its accompanying parking lot kill some off when its time to resurface. That happens everywhere though so any other factors I dunno. There are more as you go south of NYC, espically by the time to get to DC area, and west to PA as well.

  12. 66 now after a low of 61. That just doesnt happen much at all in July, late July at that. Not in recent memory. Weather apps say record low was 62, based out of closest station at LGA, but they fell a degree or two short.

  13. That storm last night lasted surprisingly long. Had some minor basement flooding as well. Pushing a foot of rain in July. Small green space outside is now an out of control rain forest this month.
