  1. Not only that, but this graphic is a great depiction of the incessant radar donut holes we get for just about every single snowstorm in DC metro.
  2. The porch light, lol. That does sound like some new streaming series. My wife would've said the same thing back in the day, but after 30+ years of marriage, she knows when to pick her battles now. When I'm watching the porch light, there will be no interruptions from the peanut gallery.
  3. True, but the winter of 2009-10 was the one that made my day, so to speak. Never to be forgotten.
  4. Lemme know when your book is published. I'll buy the first copy! Kocin and Uccellini best be looking over their shoulders.
  5. Gainesville: Interesting that the cul-de-sac asphalt surface is now completely white, but grassy surfaces remain bare. Pretty much indiciative of how cold the road surface is. No sun angle to worry about at night. Normally my observation has been that grassy surfaces whiten up first while the roads stay wet for a time before accumulation sets in.
  6. It's on in Gainesville! Flakes the size of gnats, but it's a start.
  7. Waiting in Gainesville. No snow sticking to data centers yet. In the meantime, let's take one last look at the models in order: Euro, CMC, GFS, and NAM:
  8. VDOT pre-treated my den. I've got football yard lines striped on my TV,
  9. Ice water for me right now. Simulating ZR, but the changeover to Tito's on the rocks occurs around 02z. Now, the question is once you've consumed half of your beverage, is the glass half full or half empty?
  10. As many miles as NWS needs to verify their discussion. Might be Pittsburgh for all we know. Let us embrace the ground truth when it's time to do so.
  11. Aye. One element that hasn't been mentioned much since we're so focused on QPF/storm track right now is the wind picking up during the day Monday once this mess clears the area. Definitely don't want thick treecycles exposed to 30 mph gusts.
  12. ZR reduction/deletion, ftw! Trees, you can stop exploding or falling down now.
  13. Up to 19F here in Gainesville. Time to don my swimsuit, set out the lawn sprinkler, and jump through it to cool off a bit.
  14. 12z GFS ensemble mean MSLP anomaly, hot off the press for next weekend. Better than previous versions. We're still in the 1st inning here. Deterministic model runs at this range perform more gymnastics than Cirque du Soleil.
  15. Last 9 runs of the GFS for 18z Sunday, starting at 12z Jan 22 through the most recent run. Clear northward creep, as depressing as that is.
  16. Fauquier County schools will be closed until April. They close when clouds look mean.
  17. While one has a better chance of winning a USSR state-sponsored lottery than getting a single GFS deterministic run to verify at 10 days out, the 0z GEFS isn't exactly self-assured of a coastal low solution either. It hints at one, but that's about it. Lotta time yet between now and early Feb to go bowling for Miller A's, but some of the biggest storms had such strong signals that the models locked onto them 7+ days out and remained remarkably consistent until 0-day.
  18. Wind is absolutely ripping right now. Gusts to 35 mph. Gainesville, and that ain't the Florida one.
  19. Models being models, generally. Most of us are trying to overlay our preferred solutions on top of inferential extrapolations by imperfect 3-D computerized calculations with known biases. General consensus? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ In other news, the drinking has begun.
  20. I lit the charcoal grill to grill some lamb chops just after the front passed through. The fire struggled mightily to put out decent heat. Was concerned I'd have to finish the chops in the broiler. First world problems, aye.
