  1. The good news is the cold, wet start to summer "seems" to be doing a number on the gypsy moths. How are other folks fairing?

"Mr. Gooch said it is too early to tell whether the fungus that is known to kill the moths, Entomophaga maimaiga, is to be credited for dead gypsy moths in spring 2019 — other factors could be in play. The cool, wet weather prevented some of the moth hatchlings from feeding, leading them to starve to death, while others could have been eaten by various insects.

“There are certain areas I’ve been watching and they’ve hatched and they just did not move off the egg mass because it got cold,” he said. “We had a couple of days where it was down in the low 30s after they hatched. Normally, it’s a lot warmer.”

Interesting pattern, no prolonged big heat but definitely summer heat and dews at times interspersed with some BN temps.  Just wish we could get a 5 day stretch with no rain to kind of hit the climate reset button.

Five? How about a three day stretch . When was the last time ? Has to be a year ago .

It’s been a good spring . I have zero complaints other than too much rain. Enough sun and warm days, a few humid days and zero cold. This has been the best spring south of the pike since 2012 torch.  What do you mean ? I see Freaks and others posts and I am at a loss. I haven’t complained or melted or anything. I’ve liked this spring a lot for the AN temps . Again only complaint is too much rain

"I have zero complaints other than too much rain"

That would be not zero complaints .

Black flies are pretty much done here.  Mosquitoes will be next.  Deer flies near the middle of June through the end of July    Seasons in seasons

    Ugh deer flies.

It does back statements up with facts though.  At least someone in the argument can show that they actually looked at something.

Without a strong reasoning to go BN though, in today's climate if you don't have a strong cold signal the Las Vegas money is on AN.  I think the minimum temps will get it done, plus a couple hot days middle of next week.

    This ^

0.40" and a 4.57"/hr rate at one point. Not a bad way to start the season.

I see @kdxken  browsing. Is your daughter still up here or did she get devoured by black flies?

She's back in Boston done with school. She did however go hiking in the area on Saturday and her scalp can confirm a banner year in the Northfield area.

  10. Green Mountain National (great course)

" WOW! We're just 2 days away from opening up for the 2019 golf season! So dust off those golf clubs and put a peg in the ground because you're next on the tee. Call or Text "BOOK" to (802) 500-1157 to get your tee time. We can't wait to see you on the 1st tee "

Get out there before the season is over :)

What gets me is that up at that elevation, despite it not being *that* far up, the climate is over a month behind say a place like Concord, NH (a neutral place on this forum that many can sort of relate to).  The normal high today is 49F and the normal high is 49F at CON on March 28th.

Essentially it's like what many on the forum would consider climo for the second half of March up there right now.   In a big snowpack year, there's plenty of snow around during the second half of March for most folks on here but it's melting, ha.

Was it nice there yesterday? My daughter hiked up Jay Peak yesterday and it was socked in. Snow was so deep spots she had to carry her dog. Not a lot of green around the lake Willoughby either.

Not often, and not much recently.  The Northern hardwood forest has been called "asbestos forest", though the softwoods are more vulnerable.  Since I've been in Maine (46 years) only one fire has covered more than 1,000 acres and that was a special case.  3,000 acres in Baxter Park had been flattened by wet snow plus wind in Nov. 1974.  Because of the park's "forever wild" dictum (plus some court action) only the road edges had salvage harvests, and in 1977 that well-seasoned brushpile was ignited, probably by lightning.  Firefighters were forbidden or highly discouraged from using heavy equipment to clear fire lines, so essentially the entire blowdown area burned.

Farther back, a 1965 fire downeast scorched over 10,000 acres and the series of fires in late Oct 1947 covered about 200,000 acres, causing 15 deaths and consuming some million-dollar mansions on Mt. Desert Island.   (If interested, search for "The Week Maine Burned.")

As for the prescribed burns to clean up, unless there is a safety issue (or why salvage was allowed along the Baxter Park roads), that dead/down material is better left in place, for nutrient cycling and for plants/critters which use the stuff.

    Great stuff thank you !

More power to you Nick. I couldn't deal with that this time of year.

I mean a freak icing event would be cool, but it's like you guys are 30-45 days behind here. 40s and drizzle in June would make me grab the uzi.
