Records were set on both Dec 31 1965 (63F) and Jan 1 1966 (62F) and that temperature was probably observed at midnight as I recall it was thundering and lightning outside right around New Years Eve at that moment in time. I have the vague recollection of it being closer to 70F than that, perhaps it was a few degrees warmer over there than at the Park. The record high mins for both days were also set (51F Dec 31 and 52F Jan 1). That 52F on Jan 1 1966 was probably towards late evening, the overnight "low" was probably closer to 60 F.

    Looking at my data base I see that the six warmest NYE max temps are 1965 (63F), 1932 (62F), 1992 (61F) and 1895, 1936, 1990 (all 60F). The warmest NYD temps are 1966 (62F), 1919 (61F), 1973,1979,2005 (all 60F), and 1885 (59F). More recently, 58F in 2019 tied by 1876.

No reason it couldn't be warmer though, Jan 2 1876 had 68F for a record high and Dec 29 1984 was 70F.

Looks like 1884-85 had a similar situation to 1965-66 as the high on Dec 31 1884 was 58F.

Mercifully, if I remember correctly, the 1965-6 records were set at the beginning of a long NYC subway strike,  and some people were able to walk to work in the mild weather.

DPs starting to drop. 68F earlier this morning, 63F now. I fully expect dews in the 50s this afternoon and one hell of a good sleeping night coming up. Windows open, temps in the 50s, low dews and the sound of critters outside...

Not too cold, or the critters don't sing.

The weather instruments at Belvedere Castle have long adorned the top.
There used to be a government meteorologist here in the city to keep an
eye on them. But now the nearest meteorologist is 60 miles that way.

Sheesh! Central Park is a great place.  But that blows my mind.  Probably economy and budget issues, cum bureaucracy at its worst.   Pity the poor Mets who get blamed.   No met for 60 miles.

No? They were out last night. And w/the A/C off, windows open and cool temps it was great sleeping.

    Cicadas jamming today as well...

Been hearing katydids in the nearby woods for several days.  Tree frogs are silent tonight.  Saw a tiny one trying to climb outside wall, thinking that it's a tree no doubt.  Cicadas are around, but not noisy.  Maybe this will be a quieter year, after their more numerous cousins had the stage here.  Waxing moon is appearing spooky in tonight's sky, due to the fires out west, perhaps.  Gonna be a good night for sleeping.

I'm pretty much done. Any residual will probably be unmeasurable. Still seeing lightning flashes off to the north and east but not hearing any thunder.  Finished up with 1.19" for the day in 2 rounds.  Temp is currently 72 with dp 71.

I saw the reports of a water rescue in Bensalem and noting the Frankford and Pennypack Creeks are out of their banks, so some of the places that got hit Monday, got hit again.  There's flooding on the Schuylkill Expressway between Montgomery and City Ave. going westbound in the SE Montco area.

System still looks robust going into NE NJ and NYC.  Glad the the timing gives us a night's sleep.  Winding down here but still rumbling and raining.  close to 2" here tonight.

Lauren Bacall is da bomb!  As much as people love Casablanca, I prefer Bogart in Key Largo (probably my favorite movie with him).

Am on the precipice of some incoming cells... That line has taken its sweet time moving east but seems to have accelerated its forward motion now.  Am currently at 78 with dp 75 so still a bit juicy here and not really stabilized.

And as I'm typing this, up goes a Thunderstorm Warning.

Round two looks appalling on radar.

After all the mayhem, got just over 1" on my deck.  More coming of course.

BTW Lauren Bacall was great.  I hated Johnny Rocco.  Glad he got his in the end.  First saw that as a kid.  I was rootin for the old man to hit him one.  After what he did to his poor boozy girlfriend.

Edward G didn't want the role but went ahead.  Great movie.  But I digress...

NE of Ewing is hitting 6" estimates

They may have a round #2 still to come through

That's near me.  Wadda storm.  "Key Largo" redux.  Johnny Rocco gettin' nervous.

(Great movie about a hurricane, for those who don't know w hat I'm raving about.)

Thunder getting a little quieter, waiting for the next round.   Had to disconnect my iMac for a while.:axe:

Wish I could make a weird sound to call a female.

    Surely you don't mean a female frog - :o

Joking aside, the trees around here are full of frog calls at night.  Never paid much attention before, but they were around over in Englishtown/Manalapan NJ too when I visited last Saturday.  Must be the high Dewpoints this summer.  There were lots of 17 year cicadas around here. Plenty of mosquitos too.
