2023 Mid-Atlantic Garden, Lawn, and Other Green Stuff Thread
mattie g posted a topic in Mid Atlantic
Figured I should get this going since I noticed some of the local early-budding trees (silver maples?) were swelling just a bit after the recent mild spell. I'm sure I'll have to mow in a couple weeks. That really got me thinking about getting my seedlings started, which I now realize is only about a month away. And let's admit it...this winter is toast anyways, so we might as well start thinking about spring! -
With winter now behind us, it's time to get into summer mode and that means: lawn, gardens and pools! Started off yesterday by roto tilling the side garden and looking to put a couple more 4' x 10' raised beds in the next year or so. So far I've planted: Music garlic (100 cloves) Georgian Red garlic (60 cloves) So far I've ordered these seeds: Squash - Waltham Butternut & Long Island Cheese Cucumber - Early Fortune & ISIS Beets - Bull's Blood & Burpee Golden Pepper - Jalapeno Traveler Strain Tomatillo - Purple Radish - French Breakfast Tomato - Berkley Pink Tie Dye , Black Beauty, Kellogg's Breakfast, Rutgers, German Gold Poppy - Black Swan Sunflower - Russian Mammoth, Autumn Surprise Lupine - Purple Cosmos

I've been bitten by the gardening bug more and more every year. Living in PA and working in DC was especially torturous this time of year when the cherry blossoms and beets would be coming up, but we still were snowy and muddy in PA. Since moving to Baltimore County last August I've been giddy at the prospect of turning our house into a gardeners dream. Last year we put in 60 soft and hard neck garlic plants and had a 95% success rate....only a few more months until harvest! Our vegetable garden this year: Lilac Bell Pepper Pink Berkeley Tie Dye Tomato Black Beauty Tomato Rutgers Tomato Dill Ace - Ukranian Cucumbers Brad's Atomic Grape Tomato Tomato, Cherokee Purple Tomato, Amish Paste Squash, Long Island Cheese Squash, Waltham Butternut Tomatillo, Purple Radish, French Breakfast Pepper, Jalapeno Traveler Strain Eggplant, Listada de Gandia Eggplant, Diamond Cucumber, Early Fortune Beet, Burpee's Golden Beet, Bull's Blood Assorted Sunflowers Assorted Poppies Moon & Stars Watermelons

Let's talk about gardening! I know we have quite a few gardeners around here. I'm sure we all have advice to share. Post what you're growing and let us see some pics! I'll edit this initial post over time and add any gardening links or resources that are relevant to our region. Some links: University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Publications - Warm and cool season vegetable growing guides tailored for our area - Pages and pages of information on soil management and pest control - Good ideas for planning your garden USDA National Center for Home Food Preservation - THE source for proper canning guidelines to ensure food safety - Also covers drying, smoking, pickling, etc. Old World Garden Farms - An excellent source of information on vegetable gardening, canning, recipes, pallet projects, and other DIY - I'm a big fan of their "post hole digger" planting method, I've had great success with it Back To Eden Film - This film drives home the benefits of wood chip mulching and organic gardening in general - If you can stomach the religious stuff (not my thing) you can learn some good gardening methods that work Carvers Links: http://www.southernexposure.com http://www.seedsavers.org http://parkseed.com http://www.sandhillpreservation.com http://www.johnnyseeds.com http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/victorygarden/ http://leapingwatersfarm.com/?page_id=16.
