I've seen a ton of different takes on what the true motive behind the invasion of Ukraine is. My current impression is it has mostly to do with distrust and resentment of the West as well as a desire to be taken seriously as a nation (which also looks back at the USSR's former "glory" and even beyond). What's your take on what motivates Putin's actions?

History major here from Maryland university, minor in Russian History. Lots of reading since, and as a professional symphony violinist, lots of friends from Russia.

What motivates Putin ? He’s of the old USSR, looking to restore the Imperial Empire. Russia historically is a paranoid country…any threat needs to be wiped out. That’s you and me, btw and he can wipe us out …. He has been majorly upgrading the Russian Nuclear arsenal and delivery systems, he has been preparing for this moment for years. We have been sleeping here in the west, we are still sleeping. Ukraine is the breadbasket of Asia, it’s like Kansas Nebraska etc. it’s also very close to Moscow. It’s toast. Again.  We don’t like it when Russia puts missiles in Cuba, Ukraine wants to join NATO.

Putin is using the exact same excuses to invade as Hitler Did. That is, that there is a large Russian citizenry in Ukraine clamoring to be saved from persecution. Totally disingenuous and false. and the Russians there mostly were because they settled when Russia took over the Ukraine. He will use that excuse for all the breakaway Republics.(Breakaway only in the sense that they reclaimed their own independence back from when they were conquered by Russia).

why the move into Ukraine now, and the testing of the waters by annexing Crimea during the Obama Administration?

Well, during the Obama administration, Putin invaded the Ukraine, and The response from the Obama Administration? They sent blankets.

Keep in mind, when the Ukraine broke away from Russia, they had one third (5,000 warheads) of the Russian Nuclear arsenal. They had the delivery systems, and the expertise to Use them. They voluntarily gave them up, in exchange for security guarantees from the United States and other countries.

you tell me, what was that agreement worth?

the lesson? Get and it keep your own nuclear  deterrent. Sweden got the message, for example. It’s my understanding they had a nuclear weapon development program that was at the cusp of producing weapons. They mothballed it. It’s not mothballed any more.

(what the media doesn’t tell us is astounding)

Now we have Biden, with his 50 years of demanding inaction in face of aggression. Go back and look at original sources, at his history, not what the media doesn’t tell you!

He will Stand up to Putin? He’s like the kid with knees shaking and spineless that gets pushed up by others to confront the schoolyard bully. Tough talk but a house of cards.

And everyone in the world knows it.

We have elected Neville Chamberlain the second. We are in for some really bad times here in the USA.

Hahaha PDQ! Bach's long lost son  Another master of musical comedy! He's been this generation's Victor Borge, lol

I’ve played concerts with Victor Borge, (Alabama symphony Orchestra) he was in his 80’s and was still doing concerts (he was in top form), he said he couldn’t afford to stay at home…

DT a week ago said February would be cold all the way through.  That guy is a pure model hugger. Teleconnections are just forecasts too.  How did that -NAO forecast all work out DT?

In fairness, he said it (that hard core winter cold being over for the winter after the potential event Feb 14, 15) was not his forecast, but it was what the models were showing, and he tended to agree with them.

  4. I’m about 150 feet from the beach at Ocean City, MD. I’m having a hard time imagining over a foot of snow on the beach along with 40-50 mph gusts. Blowing snow, laced with sand, sounds very, very wicked. There should be a special name for the weather event or conditions of blowing sand and snow together….is there one?

This storm has been great for "We should have a pretty good idea with the next set of model runs" only to have no idea after those models run.  Could we get a little consensus, please?  We almost had it last night with the 0z until the GFS was like "HAHAH"

I wish Alex were joking, but flurries to 2 feet sounds about right (though I'm more confident the lower shore and beaches are still going to easily break warning criteria).

It’s just like the old days… pre satellite… many times I ended up shoveling a foot of “partly cloudy”….

I went to an event the night before. On the way there I heard on WTOP that we would have flurries the next day. When I left the event a couple of hours later, I heard on WTOP that there were blizzard warnings going up. I'll never forget that.

I played a rehearsal with the Annapolis symphony that night. When I went in at 7:30, the local radio was forecasting flurries. When I came out to the car at @10, I turned the radio back on and heard what sounded like paper tearing..and the DJ said, “ What you just heard was me tearing up the forecast I’ve been giving all night. Folks, it’s going to snow over a foot, and it’s going to begin in about one hour”…I made it back to Hollywood Md as the flakes were beginning to fly…

Or maybe @Jebman will jump into it with his shovel a'la "Sharknado" and save us all!

My son did the special effects and had 2 cameo appearances in sharknado 3 …he is in the credits. He posted on his Facebook something to the effect “to all my classmates who moaned and groaned that they would never have a use for calculus, I just wrote a computer program that will render 2 million sharks per second in a tornado.”

This is another thing I don't remember as a kid. I don't remember smoke from wildfires until about 10 years ago.

I lived in Winnipeg Canada in the middle 1970’s. The smoke was unbearable… driving from Grand Forks ND to Winnipeg, there would be wildfires burning everywhere . And nobody cared, because there was nothing to burn there but peat and grasses. Thought  I was going to h*ll.

These fires burn naturally. Spontaneous combustion. They are not a new thing at all.
