How can you put this winter, as a whole, in the same category as 2011-12? 15-16 there's more of an argument, but the winter of 2017-18 is nowhere near being in the same conversation as our futility winter.

At least we'll be turning wetter starting next week.

    This.

Snowstorms is totally over-reacting. 2011-12 was a BUST with block capitals. Horrible, near record warm December. Compare that to this year where we not only had snow for the run-up to Christmas, but snow ON Christmas Eve and Day, followed by an epic cold snap. This winter, according to Doug Gillham of TWN, averaged out almost dead on normal in the temperature department, maybe slightly below. You simply cannot compare this winter to those of 2011-12 and 2001-02.

The busts with this dud will be immense, lol!

No kidding! One Facebook weather group was calling for 2-4" in Toronto by Friday - we haven't seen anything! I don't know where they get their info from - no model was calling for that amount in the snow-hole, otherwise known as Toronto.

It’d be nice to keep it interesting. Well East of 81 as I see it. Just not enough time. Not enough dig. Not enough negative. Forms to far N. It has a kicker (slow pusher).

Just not enough anything. Hope I’m wrong. NAM has been crushing it this year. I’m probably being dumb to discount it. And we have about 2 more model cycles where EC storms trend west (before correcting East in last couple). So 18z- tomorrow’s 6z Nam could be entertaining, if not misleading.

The Euro model doesn't seem to have been all that good this year. Just a couple of days ago it was hinting at almost 17" of snow for my area between the 3rd and 13th...doesn't look like we'll see much of anything!

None of them have a track anywhere near that now. Unfortunately, they all goto the benchmark. It’s NYC- Boston storm. Let’s watch for next week!

Honestly, the average yearly snowfall must have gone up a lot for cities like Boston and NYC since he turn of the millennium. It just seems that we see more big coastal snowstorms than Gulf and Texas lows these days.

I didn't think it was possible to get a 2" synoptic bomb across WNY. A lot of stuff has to come together right to get the totals we saw. Congrats to Eastern NY too, they deserve it more than anyone. Looks to continue there most of the night.

Congrats to all of you guys. As I expected, it was a bust for Toronto. We barely saw any snow out of this.

  6. You can thank Pinatubo for that one.

I agree with Harry on last summer. Last summer made me want to move.... really far north. I had flashbacks of the Middle East from late June into July.

This. I believe Pinatubo resulted in a number of weather anomolies in the early 90s. Some believe that the snowy winters of 1992-93 and 1993-94 were also partly a result of the volcano, although the effects of volcanoes, I gather, are generally felt most in the summer months.

There's an interesting book called "Volcano weather" that was published in 1983 which describes 1816, the true year of no summer. Interestingly, that book was written asa result of a volcano that had occurred in Mexico in the spring of 1982, with the author opining that the chilly summer of 1982 was partly a result of this.

  7. Good morning everybody,

Cold surprised me this morning with far lower values than expected in the territory:

    Dawson -45.3C

    Old Crow -43.9

Beaver Creek -43 (do not have the exact)

    Carmacks -42.6

    At my place -42.1C !

Here are some pictures I took this morning at sunrise, with some ice crystals fog

Just wanted to drop in and congratulate you guys in Alaska and the yukon who are having such an amazing winter. Has been largely a dud for us out east! Amazing pics by the way!
