As of yesterday we were within 0.1 degrees of tying 1994 but today's going to ruin it for sure- 47 at BWI already. I was worried about today, I figured it would end slightly above average. We should still finish in top 10 though.

We're now tied for 9th coldest! The low of 5 this morning will help even more. Now I'm waiting to see if we can get colder than 1994 (which is 7th on the list and only a half degree away)

After yesterday we were tied for 14th coldest. And today was well below average so that will help. I think we will get in the top 10, but its possible Friday might ruin it at the very end with a near normal to slightly above normal day. Rodney, how's DCA and IAD looking? Any chance of breaking top 10 there?

Jan. 21 is the new Dec. 5 :-) But that made me think- what day in the year has historically had the most accumulating snow events?

The era of snow futility is over. Won't be tracking this anymore fortunately. Snowfall record was beat, looks like the lowest max will get beaten too.

This is somewhat of a long shot, but I believe a top 10 coldest January at BWI is now possible too.

Record daily snowfall watch for tomorrow (1/21) at BWI- previous record is 2.0 inches, set in 1982. Record lowest max watch for Wed. (1/22) at BWI- previous record is 19 degrees, set in 1961.

Time for a BWI snow futility update. So far we have 7.1 inches this season: If BWI records less than 4.1 additional inches this winter, we will break the consecutive 3 year snow futility record. If BWI records less than 1.5 additional inches this winter, we will break the consecutive 4 year snow futility record. If BWI records less than 2.9 additional inches, it will be the first time ever that the location has recorded 3 consecutive single-digit seasonal snow totals.

Thanks. Looking at those dates you mentioned I realized I missed 1881, that ties the 1936 record at BWI for 107 degrees (-6 and 101).

This is probably a RodneyS question but I wonder what the largest difference is between a daily high and daily low in one calendar year at DCA/IAD/BWI. I think 1936 may be the record for BWI- lowest temp ever recorded that year was 0 and highest recorded was 107, so thats a 107 degree difference. 1994 would be another one, with the lowest temp recorded being -5 and the highest 101, a 106 degree difference. I would think 2011 would have to be a big one too, with 8 being the lowest and 106 being the highest, a difference of 98 degrees. With 3 degrees being our lowest so far, that means we'd have to have a high of 110 this summer to tie it. LOL

3 degrees at BWI now so the record low part has been broken... just need to stay below 22 for the high now, which I think we'll do.

Ha! I just about to post that before you did. Yes, the BWI low of 62 beat the previous record of 59 set on Dec. 23, 1990

Both record high and record high minimums broken yesterday and today at BWI... wow... an historic (but short-lived) heatwave.

Actually that's Saturday's (Dec. 21) record, I was talking about Sunday (Dec. 22) where the record is 70... but now that you mention it, I agree, Saturday looks like it will likely be broken too.

Daily rainfall record set yesterday at BWI (1.61 inches). The previous record was 1.4 inches set in 1940.

Record lowest max was tied today at BWI (32 degrees).

I think there's a good chance that BWI has a record low and/or record lowest max either this Sunday or Monday (Nov. 24-25).

We talk a lot about vanishing late season snowfall but its getting just as bad in the early season (i.e. November). The 1971-2000 Nov. snowfall average at BWI was 0.6 inches; the 1981-2010 average was 0.4 inches. If BWI gets no accumulating snow this November, it will tie the record for the number of consecutive Novembers (8) with no accumulating snow. The two other time periods were the 8-year periods of 1979-1986 and 1997-2004. Also, 1979 did have 0.3 inches of snow in October, so technically if we're talking about no early season snow at all (and not just November), then 1997-2004 is the winner.

This morning's rain puts us at 7.61 for the month. Slight chance of rain tomorrow might bump us up to 4th, but I doubt it.

For the 2nd year in a row now, the wettest October on record watch is being issued for BWI. (2012 ended up finishing in 2nd place, behind 2005).
