Horrible day and the worst is still yet to come. For those of us in the thick of it, we need the support of everyone who appreciates what we do. Contact your Congressional representatives. The staffing shortages caused by the fork and now the probationary employee firings have us on defcon 2 level in terms of how bad it is.

The goals of the people staffing this admin will get us to defcon one and beyond. I've been in the NWS since 2009 and I fear for my job at this point. They're demanding RIFs (reductions in force plans) by March 13th. This stuff technically is illegal and could be stopped by Congress if GOP Senators and Reps muster up the will to stand up to this for once.

Not very optimistic about it, but maybe understanding that offices in their states or districts would have to close and services degraded, and the flood of complaints from constituents can make a difference.

I'm truly sorry for what you and NOAA is going through. What that'll mean moving forward is catastrophic, and the administration could care less. We will all be less prepared for the disasters we face and of course in the aftermath we now know we're on our own.

Unfortunately, the GOP reps and senators are afraid of the MAGA crowds they have lied to for years, the same people they used for votes are threatening them. Even if they had a shred of decency, they're cornered by extremists.

So sadly I see this playing out until at least midterms.

And the towel is thrown in for most of NE IL.

Amazed as the number of schools that canceled today.

I'll believe the weekend storm when I see flakes. Was hoping to have a good week or two of storms and missed these threads!

Just a reminder not to get too invested this season until flakes are falling. Just another fail in a season that has just been a dud.

With regards to the schools, I think the timing of the storm and after school pick-up was what drove that decision. From driving through the North Side into Niles, the roads are atrocious right now, I can only imagine how many more accidents we'd see with bus stops and after school pick-ups ongoing. Plus they work a day or two into the school year for these things..even if it ends up being a turd duster

Anything is better than the current pattern.

I don't mind the cold, yeah the dry sucks but it's time for cold. Nothing worse than my Xmas' spent in Cobb County, dreary and 50-70. One Xmas Eve it was top down on the Jeep and 73. Hard to feel in the holidays mood with that. If COVID wasn't bad enough, '20 was raining heavily and in the low 40s...added to the depression.

I'll take CAD all day if must

Very ominous looking next to the lake in Kenosha as the wall of read approaches.

Lived on the south side of Kenosha in 2010 when a horrible derecho cleared the lake front parks of their older trees. My neighborhood on Lincoln Rd near Snap on was crushed.

florida is objectively bad in almost every way but the gulf side is def the worst, total snoozer and just filled to the brim with the worst combination of old folks and rednecks

at least in miami u fell like you're in the tropics not the south and there's action and waves

Agreed on Florida. The absolute worst.

30A on the panhandle just east of Destin has the most beautiful beaches I've been to in the States. Absolutely gorgeous--getting there is no picnic but once you get thru the ride in it's amazing. Rode out a tropical storm in a beach house in Seagrove Beach a few years back--when the storm passed we had miles of beach all to ourselves.

That would be the all time largest snowstorm in Minneapolis if it verifies. Word is getting out to the general public, panic buying of typical staple foods is underway.

Hopefully not Atlanta stupid. One of the many funny things about living in the ATL is watching people hoard bread and bottled water in the run up to a dusting of snow or a tropical depression pushing thru. Although I will say driving anywhere in the Atlanta metro with a dusting is ridiculously unsafe due to the hilly terrain.

Breathe, prepare, hunker down. Don't be ATL stupid.
