Does your ground freeze with all that snow?

This year frost was only 10” in snow covered areas. Some years it’s feet thick. Just depends when the deep snow hits. There are weight and speed restrictions on the county roads now for the deep frost but even that isn’t too deep this year with the mild winter and warmth early.

    Suicide weather.

Looks like snow will be gone a tad sooner this year (maybe another week) thanks to the crazy week of warmth, I can't imagine how long it'd have hung around if this had been a typical April.

Cool one today with a high of 34 forecast but at least the uprising and violence in the coop is under control now that the ladies are able to roam, scratch around, eat worms.  Thankfully they'll shit more outside too.  winter coop duty- not fun.

May 10th I found was a key date.  Things would start greening up regardless of the weather around May 10th when I was in the Keweenaw for 5 years.

That’s usually about the time most of the remaining snow is gone around here.

  4. Reached 78 today... has since fallen back to 72.  Snow stake says 14" but some areas have more and some have less.  Roof is still melting off snow.
Looks like more rain than snow will fall here this weekend but could still see 8-12".  Far west UP could get clobbered.

5 years ago this week nearly 3' fell and snow depth climbed above 60"

My farmers tan is almost in midsummer form after a few days working in this heat. This photo was taken today in a soon to be suburbanized part of Rosemount MN when it was 82 outside. Still some pockets of deeper snow in spots. Bonus points to anyone who knows what kind of drill rig that is in the background.

That must be incredibly heavy.  It's like summer mountain snow at this point.  What like 150" of powder all compressed down to 30"?

Yes, It's very dense and will be around a while.

Received somewhere between 250-270" here this year.  There were a few thaws but nothing substantial.

That sounds awful.  No break from winter to black fly season.  My wife got bit on the eyelid a few years ago and her whole eye swelled shut the following day for about 8-12 hours.

They're not biting right now so all's good.

The noseeum's are the worst for me and last for a few weeks at peak but linger late into Summer.

  7. First 50 of the season today!  And it looks like the temp will stay above freezing through at least Saturday.

MQT is reporting 35 inches otg this morning and I have 38 inches.  Will be interesting to follow the progression of the melt.  Even with the warmth, I'm not convinced all this snow can melt in a week, we'll see.

    Chicken approved forecast.

For sure! It's been a long, rough winter for the girls.  They have become so pent up, the leader of the group singled out a specific hen and started picking on her so bad, and then the entire flock joined in.  Her head was a bloody scab.  So... I moved her to the garage a week ago into a pen of her own and she started laying again in about 3 days and is slowly healing.

The bully, however, quickly started in on another hen so I wrang her f'n neck.

  9. Going to feel like a solid winter day up here.  Wind advisory, high of 27 with a couple inches of snow between today and tonight.

Looking at Duluth radar tho, some of the snow showers could pack a brief punch.

First 50 of the season forecast Sunday with the first 60 Monday.

  10. High of 28 here with a quick 2 inches of heavy snow this afternoon.  Freezing rain and sleet could become a real issue here later tonight before it goes above freezing in the morning.

Point has a high of 49 tomorrow.  If I break 50, it will be the first time since Autumn.
