Yes, and that twisting can result in huge spiral slashes in the trunks.

Those pines are super flexible, as the videos show.  The twisting and bending action when the upper growth catches the winds can cause spiral-like cracks.  If the tree isn't actually blown over or broken off, sometimes those huge cracks end up being closed again, sometimes closing on objects so it looks like the item was shoved through the three when what happened is it was blown into an open crack which then closed around the object.

Somewhere here i have a series of B&W photographs from Ocala National Forest after a major landfall.  It was acre after acre of bent, broken, and cracked trees and many of them had massive curling cracks.  Some others that were still standing had sap drips down the bark that revealed severe internal damage.

Thank you so much for the explanation!

  2. Is it normal for the trees that broke or are leaning to look as though they were twisted. The bark where they are broken is actually all twisted on several trees. I automatically think tornado but there were no reports of tornadoes here in Winston.

Power still out all over the place and another huge tree just fell this morning right by my work (off Robinhood Rd) so I'm sure that will delay power being restored. But we aren't as bad off as those in Florida.

  3. I'm in Kernersville and we have been without power since around 2:00. Thankfully dh just got the generator working. There are tons of trees down on the street behind mine and the railroad tracks at the top of our neighborhood have trees across them for at least 2 miles. I work off Robinhood Rd in Winston and there wasn't one single traffic light working when I left. Still a tiny bit breezy outside and I'm really hoping no more trees fall.

I have never seen wind like today that lasted so long. That was just crazy.

  4. I've tried attaching photos but it keeps telling me they are too large. We have a tiny stream in our backyard that has been dried up for a long time until this summer. In August it flooded really bad. I have a feeling it is going to flood our entire backyard like it did in August. We decided to have a little fun when it first began to fill up this afternoon.

Thought this was an interesting read. Would be great if the stall could happen soon enough and keep this thing to our east. http://www.stormhamster.com/entry/e091018b.htm

I just finished reading all of that it it was so informative. Brad P went live a bit ago and he said too that nobody really knows how that disturbance coming from the gulf will interact with Florence. I'm anxious to see what things look like tomorrow afternoon.

LOL...TWC cancelled winter in the south back in november before it started with their winter forecast.... We see how that has turned out. Mack and others laughed when I said the almost solid black wooly worm I came across in my front yard back in september (only the second one like that I have ever seen) was forecasting a very cold winter. I think he has been pretty much spot on so far!!!!!!

I found this guy on Tuesday.

Why do you always have to be so snotty? If you really wanted to learn you would have read the last few pages to get your answer......just sayin'

It's not being snotty,it's being aggravated. I've read every single post but don't always understand everything I'm reading. I can just as easily call you snotty for your reply to me. Newbies aren't willing to pay when they come here to learn and get their "Can you help me understand this a bit better" posts deleted.
