I think the $600 is needed and necessary. My wifes lawfirm of 150 employees was closed due to this virus. Majority of people in this law firm make over $45k a year. They work in foreclosure law which is non existent since Cuomo said no foreclosures for at least 3 months. Without that $600 there would be a lot of people not paying their monthly bills. This was to no fault of their own. It's only for 4 months...I don't see many people becoming that lazy for 4 months of $600 a week...

I mean I guess but this is an odd situation. Most union electricians are pulling in 35 an hour. Not sure I would want to give that up. Especially as they are most likely entering their busy time of the year. With OT they are pulling in 50+ an hour.

Who would ever leave their job to get unemployment? Only those who are dumb would... UI is temporary, not guaranteed. You lose your health insurance, vacation time, seniority, relationship with your company and colleagues. Unless you make under $50k a year you actually make less money. There would be ZERO incentive for me to quit and go on UI. This post makes ZERO sense. Lindsey Graham is an idiot, as is typical with most of the GOP. Pelosi is an idiot too though. There was an interview with a NYC doctor that stated this is being treated incorrectly. That ventilators actually cause more harm then good and it's not the solution to opening up the lungs. He stated this virus exhibits similar effects to altitude sickness. He said when someone gets this virus its like being dropped on Mt Everest without acclimating. That is something I cannot imagine as when I was in Peru at 15k feet it felt like every step I could not breath. I had huge issues with elevation down there. I guess Doctors are learning as they go with this and don't necessarily know the best option to treat patients with COVID. They must figure since its a lung problem that ventilators are the solution.

We just got it too. But it's $540 due to taxes.

It was a very depressing time for me applying to hundreds of jobs, dozens of interviews and getting turned down over and over. It went on for 2-3 years and was a very dark time of my life. Keep your head up and always keep confident in your abilities. You will get something!

I think the extra $600 only goes until July 31st which is when most people should start going back to work. For instance my wife makes around what you would get for the $600+normal UI. She got "furloughed" as a result of this pandemic. As soon as this is done she will go right back to work. So I get why they added the $600.

Plus with unemployment you don't get health insurance, so you're kind of screwed if anything happens to you during that time. Knowing my luck as soon as I lost my insurance, something really bad would happen like last time. I broke my ankle playing hockey and my wife was in the hospital having surgery for kidney stones. Literally 2 weeks after I lost my insurance...

Yeah I was looking for 2-3 years in 2008-2011 time frame. I got laid off from a large company and because I didn't finish my degree and very little experience outside of restaurants no one hired me.

I got laid off during the 2008-2010 financial crisis. They gave me extended employment for I believe 18 months, but only if you went back to school. So that is when I went back to school to finish my Bachelors degree. Some people took advantage of that time period to better themselves, but I'm sure many took advantage as well. The worst part of that time period is the governments bailing out all the financial firms that participated in aggressive lending practices. Giving out 500k mortgages to people making 50k a year. The tax payers bailed out Citi, BOA, JP MORGAN, AIG, etc... The CEOS of these "Failing" companies fired thousands of people and got huge paydays on our dollar. It's a lose/lose situation. The tax payers are either paying for welfare and subsidies for the low wage earners or paying for the bonuses for the top executives in their "bail outs".
