I remember reading or hearing somewhere that fish tanks are a thing partly because people look at them and feel more relaxed. Well, that’s my reaction to these videos. Watch them and chill. The crickets at the beginning are a nice touch.

In the 90s I had a quest to get the perfect thunderclap captured on digital audio tape.  I found it's extremely difficult, expensive, and potentially life threatening too!  And too, whether its video or just audio, the best CG that makes you jump comes after the pause button is pressed or you seek shelter and capture stops!  At least on land there is proper shelter compared to being on a fairly small vessel taking shelter below deck, shivering while lightning strikes close enough to energize the mast sufficiently that protective spark gaps around you are snapping like firecrackers in a Chinese New Year celebration and that thought crosses your mind...will you wake up the next morning?

Aquariums are relaxing but (besides water) have something in common with boats.  Smarter people hang out with friends that own them!  It's all fun until its time to maintain them. ;)

  2. Best nocturnal lightshow up my way in years!

After the main show while looking at some video we started hearing more thunder and went for another round just before midnight.

Finally finished processing long videos on youtube.

The first round (time at money shot, as everyone loves bolts!):

Then the second storm, this view facing south:

The audio quality is quite nice, headphones highly recommended!

And just a few minutes ago, after checking radar I thought why not, checked the tower PTZ and sure enough that anvil is firing bolts into clear air!  I've only seen this from airplane windows.

    Amazing nocturnal activity for September.

Sunset to my west, non stop thunder and lightning to my east.

Lightning strikes off the chart here.  Really good crawlers.  Occasional barbed wire appearance in sky which is fairly common after severe here.  Wish it was darker the HDR10+ camera would have really caught them so much better.  Continuous dry thunder like that rolling sound you hear in the Grand Canyon.  Loved it.

I'll take NOT HAPPENING IMBY for $1000, Alex! :P

Interestingly enough, that would be an amazing way to remember the 20th Anniversary of Isabel which kicked our ass!

I may be missing a few hours at a time, but has anyone brought up that "I" storms tend to be remembered; Ike, Irma, Ian, and so on?

    Isabel, Irene, Isaias for us.

Female names seem to be the most memorable and super destructive too! :P

He is more interested in digital snow. As soon as the first actual flake falls, he is bored and looking at the latest GFS run.

I would like to have a digital snowblower with a megawatt of power.  Then I can sit in my rocker by the woodstove with kitty on lap laughing hysterically at those without using shovels and walk behinds. :D

You've said this before and, nothing has changed. It still remains 100% false.

Dec.'s snow lasted til Christmas. Then we had snow on the ground from late Jan to late Feb. We were below average nearly the whole month of Feb.

We had fog and no snow other than piles from plowing Christmas 2009.  Could not believe we went from solid 20" on the ground to nothing by the 25th.

End of Jan storm brushed us.  But Feb certainly made up for it.  I remember it was well into March 2010 and getting my diesel four wheeler high centered on a drift back in the riding trails.  Between the tall spruces, the damaged limbs suggested 20 foot plus drifts.  That was legit snow shoe required weather, rather rare for these parts.

Bad. My drive from the house to Hereford was nothing but downed trees everywhere you looked. Can only imagine what things are like once you get off the main roads. Coworker who lives in Freeland said it was equally bad at his house. Shrewsbury/New Freedom/Stewartstown area is a mess. Rotation went through Glen Rock, again a total mess.

My brother in law is a landscaping foreman who lives in Glen Rock.  He said it took him 2 hours to get from 83 to his house.  Impassible roads.  Fortunately he had chain saws with him and along with good Samaritans pitching in to help moving logs out of the way he was able to get home.  A large red oak on the corner of his property split and went into a neighbor's home.

He said lots of signs were damaged including the one at the border.  Poles snapped.  Definitely some ferocious bursts.

I was pulling into my driveway when the winds kicked up.  Little anemometer at the top of the tower was spinning so fast the cups looked like my wife's Kitchen Aid mixer on ludicrous speed!

I had my phone and wanted to take video as I could hear the ROAR but the rain was blowing too much even under the porch and my wife was holding the door and was telling me to GTFI and not let the cat out!

Just as I got inside I heard pops that sounded like small caliber rifle fire and knew exactly what it was.  She said we lost some pine trees.  Those southern pines crack so loud when they break.  And right after that moment the power went poof.  No flicker, just out like it was switched off.  That's when I knew it was going to be a long night.

  9. This is why if you have large trees close to your home you need to leave or take shelter as low as you can go!

This home off Troyer Road was destroyed.

Still now power for us as well.  No ETA from BGE, there has not been a crew assigned.  Joy of rural living.
    Thank goodness for Kohler power!

Although I'm not looking forward to the next time Ferrell tops off the tank.

  10. Has there ever been HIGH RISK for this area?

I recall back in 1998 there was an outbreak with large hail and a tornado in Carroll County.  Here we did reach severe with hail.  I remember from watching the Weather Channel when their maps were orange and red where red was essentially slight risk and when it was worse it would be a lighter, salmon color and it read greatest risk.  Assuming that would be MOD or higher.  There was no ENHANCED then.

It's been quite dark here, but it's getting noticeably brighter now.

  11. What a lovely Sunday morning.
This is a treat after the past few days of H3 crap with some scattered storms tossed in.

At least those without power won't be sweating their hindparts off.  That is the worst!

Nice to have DP in the 50s at the end of July.
