  1. I read through some old newspapers from January 20-21, 1985 and wind chill factors in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio were as low as -85F on the old scale or around -60F on the new scale. Sorry about if the newspaper articles you may have to sign up to look at them and cancel within the first week or 30 days depending on the site.
  2. To Mr. Hoosier, If this article is correct Muncie had a temp of -26F and a wind of 28 mph at 8 am producing a wind chill of -60F(-85F old scale). https://kansashistoricalsociety.newspapers.com/image/253132969/?terms=Wind+chills++Indiana https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/us/in/muncie/KMIE/date/1985-1-20 Hourly temperatures are shown and at 2 pm it has a temp of -18F which is consistent with the temp on wunderground. Chippewa Valley Regional, Wisconsin January 10, 1982 -28F winds 21 mph wind chill -59F(-80F old scale). https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/us/wi/eau-claire/KEAU/date/1982-1-10 Appleton, Wisconsin January 10, 1982 unknown temp winds 58 mph. According to newspapers temperatures were in the -20F to -25F range at that time. Wind chills on the old scale were -100F in some parts of Marathon County, Wisconsin. https://kansashistoricalsociety.newspapers.com/image/248083264/?terms=Wind%2Bchills%2BWisconsin Beulah, North Dakota reported a wind chill of -109F on the old scale January 10, 1982. https://kansashistoricalsociety.newspapers.com/image/192806510/?terms=Wind%2Bchills%2BWisconsin Northern Kansas likely had wind chills in the low minus 50s from what I have read in newspapers. It was December 22-23, 1989. I am not going to say a record but it was truly very cold that time in Kansas. I was 9 and it was my first memory of extreme arctic cold. The wind chill was probably around -45F the morning of December 22, 1989 where I lived in Central Kansas. Kirksville, Missouri January 10, 1982 Temp -21 winds 22 mph wind chill -51F(-71F old scale).https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/us/mo/kirksville/KIRK/date/1982-1-10
  3. Wow!!!!!!! I wonder what that would feel like on your exposed skin. It would take only seconds to frostbite. You probably would also have to wear a lung piece to breathe.
  4. Also is there any other days in history besides January 20 and 21 1985 where Ohio and Indiana had wind chills of -50F or colder. Is there any other days that you may suspect?
  5. Yeah, for sure, but I think the Watertown, Iowa -64F wind chill on December 24, 1983 and the Canton/Akron, Ohio -56F wind chill are even more impressive. I also read a news article regarding the Oketo/Marysville -52F on December 24, 1983 and it supposedly got so cold even some ducks drank water and froze to death and hens froze solid on their perch. I can't find that article even though I just read it the other day. Also Williston had a -71F according to that metorologist in that news article. Are new articles evidence for wind chills. You took the word of an observer on regards to the Mount Washington -107F in 2004.
  6. I remember the snowfall we got in Kansas in the 1983-1988 range. One thing I do remember at age 3-5 was the huge drifts and the cold somewhat. We sometimes got 8-12 inches in one day and it would accumulate and when the wind came along it blew it into drifts 5 feet tall. There also was to one day back in the 1980s where ice accumulations would be as much as 2 inches and leave a sheet of ice on the Kansas Turnpike. This also occured in 1998 and 2002 that even a 600 foot tower collapsed somewhere in Kansas. It is claimed by weather experts that major ice accumulation and flooding waters can have just as much power as an EF5 tornado.
  7. Oh wow!!! Canton/Akron, Ohio had a wind chill of -56F on the new scale on January 20, 1985 at 9:00 pm and at 12:00 am on January 21, 1985. The one at 9:00 pm the temp was -22F winds 30 mph wind chill -56F(-81F old scale) and the other at 12:00 am was -24F with winds of 24 mph wind chill -56F(-78F old scale). For an incredible 8 hours from 8:00 pm to 4:00 am the wind chill was -50F or colder in Canton/Akron. It ranged from -71F to -81F on the old scale. https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/us/oh/canton/KCAK/date/1985-1-20 https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/us/oh/canton/KCAK/date/1985-1-21
  8. Sloulin International, North Dakota December 24, 1983. Temp -33 winds 24 mph wind chill -68F(-91F old scale). https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/us/nd/williston/KISN/date/1983-12-24 Also if you believe what this article says the wind chill in Williston, North Dakota was -71F(-100F old scale). http://www.dglobe.com/news/1357596-wind-chill-came-bragging-rights. Northern Minnesota also recorded a wind chill of -71F(-100F old scale) on January 9th or 10th 1982. Location is unknown.
  9. Bloomfield, Vermont -50F December 30, 1933 Richmond, Rhode Island -28F January 17, 1942 Norfolk, Connecticut -37F February 16, 1943 Millsboro, Delaware -17F January 17, 1893 Washington DC -15F February 11, 1899 River Vale, New Jersey -34F January 5, 1904 Landrum, South Carolina -22F January 21, 1985. I think that is a list of all the states but there is still progress.
  10. I think that is Canton/Akron, Ohio coldest wind chill which comes out to be -53F(-73F old scale). Though Kansas has had some incredible days like Christmas Eve 1983 and December 1989 cold outbreak. Both outbreaks lasted for at least a week with subzero temperatures in some spots. I believe December 1989 likely had wind chills as cold as -50F it didn't have the winds like 1983 did but it did feature colder temperatures with some spots hitting -30F to -35F. Even 1982 and 1985 may have had possible wind chills around -50F in some areas. I kind of wonder if Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and some of the other nearby states may have matched Chicago's -60F wind chill from January 20, 1985. They are quite a bit more north than
  11. Cool. Thank You very much. Christmas Eve 1983 was so cold for a lot of areas. In Iowa wind chills on the old scale were like 90 to 95 below on that day. Some areas may have even approached 100 below on the old scale in Iowa. That would be around -65F to -70F which practically corresponds to the -64F in Waterloo. That was a -92F on the old scale. The low was -26F and the high was -15F. Ouch!!!!!! Here is an article regarding the Iowa wind chills from Christmas Eve 1983. https://www.upi.com/Archives/1983/12/24/Freezing-weather-halts-Christmas-mail-137-dead/5277441090000/
  12. Oketo/Marysville, Kansas December 24, 1983. Temp -19F winds 32 mph wind chill -52F(-78F old scale). https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/us/ks/marysville/KKSMARYS3/date/1983-12-24 I know Emporia had a temperature of -16F with a wind of 30 mph with a wind chill of -48F(-72F old scale) on December 24, 1983. I can't prove the Emporia one but I finally found a -50F or colder in Kansas. There may be possibly a couple more out there on certain dates but this is what I have been looking for. It has been six months. Wunderground has finally updated there site somewhat. I looked everywhere else and I could not find any other data. It either does not exist or does not exists on that day.
  13. This really has nothing to do with the topic but I have a temperature of 102F and a heat index of 117F. It is baking outside. There was even 120F to 122F some areas nearby.
  14. Worcester, Massachusetts January 23, 1976. Temp -11F Winds 36 mph wind chill -43F. I am certain there are colder ones than that. Mauna Kea Observatories, Hawaii had a temp of 15F on January 5, 1975. Seneca, Oregon had a temp of -54F on February 10, 1933. Mazama, Washington had a temp of -48F on December 30, 1968.
  15. Here is another newspaper mentioning temperatures falling to -25F to -30F with wind chills as low as -70F on the old scale. https://kansashistoricalsociety.newspapers.com/image/343888892/ So there certainly was -50F wind chills on the new scale December 22-23, 1989 in Republic County, Kansas and Jefferson County, Kansas.
  16. https://kansashistoricalsociety.newspapers.com/image/10727241/ This newspaper from December 28, 1989 says temperatures were -30F in Republic County, Kansas with wind chills of -60F to -70F below. To get a -30F with a -60F on the old scale you would require a wind of 10.7 mph. That would be -54F on the new scale. For -70F you would need a wind of 14.4 mph with a -30F temperature. That would be a -57F on the new scale. Even with an 8.5 mph wind and a temp of -30F that would be -52F on the old scale and -51F on the new scale. Republic, Kansas and Webber, Kansas had a record low of -29F on December 22-23, 1989 according to intellicast so it did happen. Webber is 3 miles from the Nebraska border and 5-6 miles to Superior, Nebraska So even with a -29F and 8.5 mph wind that would be -51F on the old scale and -50F on the new scale. That is very conservative.
  17. There were several areas in Kansas that had wind chills in the -40s on February 1-3, 2011 and there were -40s wind chills in Kansas near the Oklahoma border on February 10, 2011. Also the 99.9% wind chill is -32F for St. Francis, Kansas which is practically the same as Chicago's 99.9% wind chill of -33F.
  18. I have done some research from old newspapers in Bonner Springs, Kansas at the library from 1982, 1983, and 1989. I live there now. On January 10, 1982 they had a temp of -16F with winds of 20-25 mph. On December 24, 1983 The temperature was -17F with winds between 25-35 mph. Also a reading from December 23, 1989. The temp was -30F with winds of 5-10 mph. I may ask around a little bit more. These were all according to the Bonner Springs newspaper. The first ones wind chills could range from -43F to -45F for the first one, the second one could range from -47F to -51F, and the last one from -46F to -53F. There are others I am going to check throughout Kansas though and maybe ask some people around my town.
  19. According to wunderground the highest heat index recorded in the US happened at Appleton, Wisconsin on July 13, 1995. It was 149F.
  20. The average low in Mankato, Kansas in January is 12F and in Chicago it is 18F. However the average high in January in Mankato, Kansas is 36F and the average high in Chicago is 32F. I would think at least a few degrees colder on average. Mankato is the area I suspect had a wind chill of -52F to -55F on January 10, 1982. Mankato had an all time record low of -25F on that date. Winds in that area had to have been at least 15-20 mph. It ranged from 17 mph in Manhattan to 23 mph in Concordia. Here is a comparison in temperatures in Mankato, Kansas and Chicago in the month of January. http://www.intellicast.com/Local/History.aspx?month=1 http://www.intellicast.com/Local/History.aspx?month=1
  21. I wonder reliable that one guy in the article who said he had a temperature of -22F and a wind chill of -70F on the old scale. It would be -51F on the new scale. He said he worked at UPS and said it was the most painful nights of his life. However he doesn't indicate where he was living at in Kansas. As cold as December of 1989 was I see no reason to not believe him either.
  22. Here are some people who lived in Kansas or visited there in December of 1989 and said it was cold to the core. http://m.ljworld.com/weblogs/lawrence_weather_watch/2010/jan/9/what-was-your-coldest-day/
  23. I felt around maybe -45F wind chill(new scale)back in 1989 and it feels like wasps stinging you on your exposed skin. I put my leg out the door of my trailor for like 15 seconds and it just felt beyond words. At -25F I don't notice the sting as much but it definitely hurts your joints if you have no long underwear or nothing underneath your pants or jeans when you go outside for a few minutes.
  24. I for some reason been wanting to experience some wind chills around 50 to 65 below zero on the new scale. I just wonder how a wind chill of -45F compares to a wind chill of -65F. The air looks like an ice crystal when the wind chill is -45F. That is probably my coldest I experienced back in 1989.
