Upstate NY Banter and General Discussion..

Definitley scary as it seems like the plan is to get people back to work after they have “recovered” which could be dangerous to any people working who haven’t yet had the virus... -

Almost 100 new cases in Erie county confirmed today, even with extreme limited testing. 89 new cases today (an increase of 30%). Up to 310 total cases in Erie County. Also another death in the County, woman in her 40s. Also over 300 U.S. deaths for the first time today, up to 312 deaths today. edit (10pm) page just updated before switching over to tomorrow’s Numbers (March 28), deaths just skyrocketed to 400 in the US. So not only did we reach our first 300 death day but we hit our first 400 death day -

Even a 2.5% death rate is 25x that of the flu... -

Agreed and not sure Italy is even peaking and their deaths are still rising. They may be at testing capacity so the number of cases is staying steady state as they are only testing the relative same number of cases each day where if they tested more each day they would find a further increase in positive cases. -

That and they are finally getting more testing there combined with the fact all the big time partiers were down south for spring break (ex. N.O. , Florida Beaches) -

Cases are steady but those deaths are definitley a new high for them. Very sad. I think with extremely limited testing all over (even probably including NYC relative to their population) were going to see an Italy trend here in the US were the daily cases may reach a certain point and kind of level off in a range due to a testing capacity where we are unable to test beyond a certain point thus not able to see the number of cases still increase. Meanwhile deaths will keep rising as deaths don’t really have much correlation with testing (unless they’re testing in the hospital after they’ve arrived with symptoms even if they came in with no test prior to being admitted). Hopefully I am wrong but just don’t see how this is even close to peaking here. -

From someone in the central PA thread. This is part of my anger with lack of testing. “I just read on my twitter feed a person who's friend that was 25 died from COVID-19 and they said how walking a little made them feel like they ran a mile. They ended up dying after being denied testing and not considered a priority because they didn't meet the criteria for testing despite having every single symptom and being extremely sick. The people said they couldn't prove they were around someone that had Covid so they were denied. Extremely sad. Keep an eye on your family member. This 25 yo went into cardiac arrest after not getting to a hospital after 2 weeks. People who are young think they're invincible from this but I'm young and pretty worried. Well tbh I'm petrified of giving this to my parents or grandparents.“ -

Cases are beginning to skyrocket in Erie County and that’s even with extremely limited testing. Up to 221 cases and now up to 5 deaths. We were at 1 death in the county this morning. Buffalo Police Officer also in critical condition in a medically induced coma.County executive said today there were 31 hospitalizations when there were only 146 cases so we’re likely over 50 hospitalizations in Erie county. This is getting scary fast. -

Don’t believe any of the BS they tell you. New England Journal of medicine showed viability of the virus on paper and cardboard for up to 24 hours. If a mail handler, clerk, or carrier is infected even if they don’t know and they come in contact with it and you touch it there is a possibility you could be infected from it. I would recommend leaving all your mail in your mailbox for 24 hours then bringing it inside, wipe off your mailbox with a disinfectant wipe daily and wash your hands immediately after going through your mail. -

I agree with you on the symptomatic aspect, however when there are people that are showing symptoms and are still being denied testing due to very limited kits available that is still skewing the numbers. Those illnesses that you listed you can get tested/screened for if there's a concern where here you can not. You can't just say that doesn't have an effect on the total number of cases which in turn has an effect on the mortality rate... I agree with what Delta said that it seems you have a 4-5% mortality rate among those who are moderate/severely sick with this virus but I still think it's still somewhat lower because as I stated I have a friend that is very ill who's mother tested positive and now he and his father are both very sick and are trying to be tested but are told by the county that they can not be tested at this time because of their age and overall health in good condition prior to this virus and that they test need to be saved for essential personnel... -

Again though this is of tested cases which is going to skew the numbers a lot. Right now the only people getting tested at least locally are the ones with the most severe symptoms or those who have been exposed to someone with an already positive test which is very limited since there were several days that Erie County had no reagents to preform test so basically you need to either be extremely ill or have come in direct contact with the 122 in Erie county that already tested positives and show symptoms to even get tested. I know numerous people who have been in DIRECT CONTACT with someone testing positive and are now showing symptoms but because they are young they are being told they will not receive any testing and to just monitor their symptoms at home. This doesn’t even include the thousands of not hundreds or thousands that likely have the virus and are asymptomatic and will never be counted since they don’t know they have it (still dangerous, if not more dangerous to the public since they can still spread it). This is a serious serious illness and I am taking every precaution I can to protect my family but I know that these death rates are definitely skewed with lack of/testing availability. -

I have not been a big fan of Cuomo before this Crisis but he has done a fantastic job handling this imo. He has been strategic in his plan, let his team of experts inform him on what’s best instead of just going based on what “he thinks is best, or will make him look the best”. Not only that but he has explained to the Public what is going on in such a different manor than that moron in the Whitehouse. He has truly given me a sense that we will get through this and that he actually cares about people vs feeling like we’re just a bunch of sacrificial lambs to get businesses back up and running “before Easter (his words, not mine)” even when all the experts say this is still weeks away from peaking even with the measures we have in place now, not loosening them or lifting them completely. I honestly didn’t mind Trump before this but now I wish he got impeached months ago because somebody’s grandfather could probably lead this country better then he can. #Cuomo2024 -

How is total new cases right when for the last 2 days in a row NYS alone has seen 5000+ new cases a day? -

They’re numbers are definitley off. They reported 31 cases in Erie county when there is now 56 and even at the time of his press Conference, Erie County was reporting 47.... noticed this the last few days as Erie Counties numbers are always way lower on his list then what the county is reporting. 56 is also a pretty staggering number considering how title test they’ve had and how they’ve been out for days the number is higher, the county even said we know there a lot more cases then we have confirmed due to the lack of testing and now they said they won’t have new test until Tuesday. -

It’s exactly that he just doesn’t want to call it that and scare people into anymore of a panic than they already are. -

I have decided to voluntarily quarantine myself along with my fiancé and son. My fiancé is 27 weeks pregnant and pregnant women are now being put in the high risk category due to their suppressed immune systems. I was told by the post office today that they can’t garuntee I’ll have a job when I come back as I may be out of work for months until it is safe enough for me to go back after my daughter is born. Luckily I have a years worth of savings that I can survive through this but as you stated unfortunately many don’t have that and I have no idea how they are going to get through this time. It’s so scary and surreal, it’s like living in a nightmare. How quick things change from life a month ago to now, I know I never saw this coming. Also shows you how much we all take our health and day to day lives for granted. Praying for everyone to get through this. -

Again, I’m not worried for myself. I’m worried for my unborn daughter because the effects on newborns are still unknown, especially premature newborns... -

I have 1 kid and my fiancé is 27 weeks pregnant. I’m terrified of bringing it home to her with all the unknowns that it can cause newborn babies. It has been confirmed in Europe that it can be transmitted in the womb to the baby and women who get it and have high fevers may have to give birth early which their lungs aren’t even fully developed at 27 weeks, then add on a serious respiratory illness such as corona virus to an already underdeveloped set of lungs and it’s not good news. My job is considered an “essential” federal employee so the only way I get off is if I contract the virus and am mandatorily quarantined from it. I already talked to the Union who basically told me to do what I have to do but there’s no garuntee I won’t be let go if I voluntarily quarantine to try and protect my family from getting it. Not to sound ignorant but if I was single or didn’t have a kid under 1 and another one almost here I wouldn’t be so scared but to be honest right now I’m honestly terrified and freaking out and don’t know what to do. This is a situation I’m sure many of us could never have even imagined, I know I sure never could have and I’m praying somehow we all make it through but this is quickly turning into a nightmare. -

It is all of Erie County schools not just Buffalo. Also 4 new cases just confirmed in Erie a county bringing the total up to 7 confirmed cases and its only going to rapidly spread as at least one of the cases had a child who attended school all week last week (obviously not knowing that their parent was positive for the virus). -

Erie County and the city of Buffalo in State of Emergency. All schools in all of Erie County now closed through at least April 20th.... this is absolutely nuts.
