What isn't cool about an animal that sleeps and Netflix and chills in dirt for 17 years and suddenly wakes up to eat and bone for a few weeks?

And loudly lets everyone know what they're doing.

Ha, funny you say that.  When things are back to full capacity (hopefully next season), my friend and I are going to do a Canadian hockey trip and see the Caps play in Montreal and Winnipeg.  I’ve heard great things especially about Winnipeg due to the smaller arena and the diehard hockey fans there.

When Winnipeg got the Atlanta Thrashers, the season ticket commitment was for 5 years.  Sold out the arena in less than 10 minutes.  For those who split them with others, the most desired dates were the first game of the regular season and when Anaheim and Teemu Selanne paid a first visit.

Same!  If Bowser doesn’t let fans back into Capital One soon, my buddy and I are going to head up to NY/Philly/Boston to see a Caps game in person.  I miss going to games.

This will probably be a way down the road, but when you have the chance go to Montreal and watch a game there.  It truly is something to be experienced.

This would be a bit harder to accomplish, given the size of the arena and you'd need to have a connecting flight, but also consider going to Winnipeg.  A few years back the crowd famously took up a chant of "Crosby's better!" when the Caps were in town.  Their taunting chants are a point of pride for them, and the arena was designed with the acoustics in mind (smaller capacity, big noise).

I currently live only six miles from my job at Belvoir, however, with a ramp-up of in-fill residential/commercial development and many extra traffic lights added in recent years, what used to be a 15-20 minute commute a decade ago, turned into (typically) a one-way 30-40 minute commute just before the pandemic shutdown. I mean, that's just a ridiculous amount of time to traverse six miles, IMHO.

And it's likely going to get worse once they really get going with the Route 1 widening project.

My daughters birthday is May 11, so I think she’s ok. My wife’s 40th is June 8...not looking good. I told her I’ll sauté some cicadas for an appetizer.

My dear, you're the best thing that ever happened to me, marrying you was the smartest thing I ever did, we'll celebrate your milestone in September.

i was living in DC (Cathedral Heights) when the last swarm emerged. as they came out of the ground i could see them on my window screens. I lived near a big wooded park and the noise in my neighborhood (full of trees) was deafening. I had a tree right outside my apartment and it was absolutely covered with cicadas.

I was apprehensive about it, but they are harmless and bumbling. you'll see the newly emerged ones upside down on the street. I used to turn them right side up as I headed to my bus stop.

I was living in DC as well, and it was amazing the difference between one part of town and another just based on that.  I remember the residential part of Tenleytown being an absolute racket and with plenty of dead cicadas plastered to the sidewalks, while areas like Capitol Hill were not that bad in comparison.

I guess this would also be the thread to post Beethoven insults if anyone is inclined.

  7. I know someone who used to live in MD but has moved elsewhere where Old Bay seasoning isn't as popular.  He did this even before he moved, but whenever he travels, whether via plane, train, or automobile, he carries the stuff with him because he feels it's a good idea to be prepared.

It is truly awful that I've lost a year+ of the college experience online. I can't think about it too hard or I'll get sad. Really gonna have to live it up next semester.

That said, I am also somewhat ready to move on from college. I would like to make some real money, haha. Internship applications already are horrible though... have to imagine job apps are worse.

Don't worry, you'll start having dreams about whether you accumulated enough credits to graduate, and they'll usually involve the courses which in hindsight you should never have taken in the first place.

I'll MOST LIKELY (70/30 odds) survive. My 'discobs' legacy (I say as if I'm some sort of super famous person... CRINGE!!) lives on.

What was the first booze (or kind of booze?... I'm bad at talking about beer) that ever entered your body and did you like of taste of that booze?

I was 16, and my big brother handed me a glass of something and said, "Here, try this."  And yes, he enjoyed the face I made.

It was 151 proof rum from our parents' rather small liquor collection.

My first game system was Super Nintendo...

When we would visit friends we played Ghostbusters on their Commodore 64.

And original Oregon Trail and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego FTW!

I had never heard of such a thing. Thanks for explaining.

I’m preparing myself for the day when I’ll have to explain all of the old school technology to the kids.

Explaining Blockbuster and dial up internet will be hilarious

Or sometimes when taking a "private call" meant stretching the phone with the longest cord, whether it was phone to the wall, handset to the main set, or a combination of both, as far as you could and calling out the click when someone else got on the line.

Then there was that rotary dial thing.

He was so god damn terrible. Like, it legit makes my blood boil that someone in Canada thought that was a good pitch idea to give a green light too and that it was a popular show. I have not met a single parent who actually liked the show. The worst.

I apologize on behalf of the country of my birth.

Is this actual news? Practically anything you can name is probably offensive to someone.

I have always found Barney and the Teletubbies to be very disturbing. That shit should be banned.

Not sure what's going on with Dr. Seuss but Hasbro got into a PR pickle by saying the Mr. Potato Head brand is going to be renamed as Potato Head and after public outcry had to clarify that Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head will still have those names but it is the brand name that is going to change from Mr. Potato Head to Potato Head.  As for The Muppet Show, if you watch it on Disney+ you'll see a disclaimer that it contains content that may be offensive, in particular relating to racial and cultural stereotypes.

I know Barney but what are telechubbies?

You can live a happy and contented life without knowing what they are.

Yeah, they recently wired our neighborhood for FIOS...I’d change in a heartbeat. But we’re in the process of selling/buying so I’m holding off changing it. I checked our house we are buying in Alexandria last night and no FIOS there. yay more Comcast!

If you're buying in the City of Alexandria, there is no Fios available.  In Alexandria, Fairfax County, it depends on where exactly you're located.  My local Nextdoor feed covers decent portions of both, and every few months there is usually a post from someone in the city part wondering if/when Fios will ever show up there, only to be told the chance is pretty much none.

My 38lb dog just scampered across the sleet covered grass without leaving a single paw print. We're officially encased. 27/27 La Plata

I wonder if LWX would accept that as an official observation?

Ha I actually wondered that myself. Couldn’t place it

I tried to find out, but instead learned that a few weeks ago they gave up a shorthanded goal while they were on a 5 on 3 power play.  That's embarrassing.

    SHGs are back breakers.

The Bruins set a record in 2010 during a game against Carolina by scoring 3 short-handed goals on the same penalty kill (it was a 2-minute minor); it took all of a minute and 4 seconds to do the job.  They won 4-2.
