Major cold evolving for January.
Don't want to rush the core of cold in.
The threat of most severe cold will be for January 15-February 15 when normals are lowest.
During that time the average of Chicago, NYC, Dallas and Atlanta could reach -10°F or greater for at least a week.
Benchmark for lowest temperatures is 0°F in NYC, -10°F in Chicago, 15°F at Dallas and 10°F in Atlanta.
Feedback from threats of repetitive snow events can enhance the cold.
First of all drying is spreading back into the area of the Indian Ocean in Days 4-11 that tipped us off to the current warmth when it was wet.

Warmest I've been all day here in the N.Foothills sitting at 33/33  

lgt freezing drizzle 31.5 ended up with 14 inches

I got about 14 still coming down mod. looks to taper off in a couple hours. Then looks like it may skip the foothills tonight per RGEM been a great storm no doubt!!

Looks like the dry slot to the SW is approaching pretty fast!  don't see this snowing into tonight unless is begins to pivot or redevelop??

I’m not liking the shift south for us folks in NW NC and S Va. if the Euro shifts south imma gonna be very concerned! Until then I’ll hug the CMC

I am growing more concerned for areas in Western NC, because the model data continues to paint widespread 15-25” amounts across there. This storm will be a two-part system and one that will most likely bring crippling snowfall to many areas from Interstate 85 and to the north. I even think that South Raleigh may get some snow out of this setup. 

Some areas will likely get 20"+ of snowfall from this system. This will be a long-duration storm for many areas and lasting nearly 48 hours. Winds are expected in the 15-25mph range and some gusts could reach 50mph at times. This is a borderline "Blizzard" for Western NC. There will be some areas that mix with or change to sleet and freezing rain as well. Please get prepared for this storm now!
