I was in Paris, TN, northwest of Nashville, when it came through the state park there around 6:30 PM.  Crazy amounts of wind ahead of the rain and small hail.  I was in awe watching the trees sway back and forth with such ferocity.

Yes, although we didn't see much wind here in Saluda NC as it passed around 3 am, down the escarpment in Tryon and Columbus there was some minor damage and a lot of unsecured summer things blown about... (chairs and such a friend had his gas grill blown over). Amazing how there is another cluster of storm following a similar path.... on synoptic radar it looks like an S curve... unusual look instead of the bow we normally see

Slushy roads at most being reported in the southern areas of CLT.  Usual caution, but you should be fine.  Enjoy the flakes!

Thanks Guys!!!, Keeping her informed with this group's help is a real luxury.  Sadly I'm at work and ICC Spindale is just far enough west to miss this one... Glad to hear people are seeing some flakes though!!!

  3. Top Six Southern Winter Folklore Sayings

    1. If you count the morning fogs in August you will know how many August mornings were foggy.

    2. A heavy crop of acorns will lead to fatter than average squirrels next spring.

    3. If it thunders in winter, 10 days later it will have happened 10 days ago.

    4. If you study the bands of the wooly worm you will know how many are brown and how many are black.

    5. Snow that lays on the ground for more than three days is dirty.

    6. A ring around the moon means your Lasik surgeon screwed up.

Thanks jburns!!! I missed that post in September too... getting a little punchy from this sad excuse of a winter that held such promise at the beginning...

  4. Could any of the mods or red taggers comment on the government shutdown and if the GFS is getting the full current observational data input prior to each model run?

Edit - Saw someone post in the mountain thread last night, that they thought the shutdown was affecting it, but don't really see where the would be the case...

Having a family outing with your people at Christmastime is worth it. I'd go as high as 25 if there was ice cream involved afterwards.:santa:

My wife and I did the Charlotte Speedway Christmas lights. It was $25 and felt it was well worth it.

Off topic again... but wanted to thank you guys, Just home now from Bristol speedway, and a grand time was had by all, my daughter was terrorizing everyone in the Christmas village with her deft wheelchair antics!!!  Also, Funnel cakes and hot chocolate were involved, would have been worth it at twice the price!!!  Interesting though, we've got more fallen snow on the ground here in Saluda than anywhere along the way up there...

  6. Out cleaning off the car and truck, not like I can make it up my driveway right now.  When this freezes later I'd bet we will be able to walk on top of this... Wet and heavy... Looks like part 1 of this storm topped out at 18.25 snow/sleet accum.  Raining right now at 34/34... can't wait to see what is coming later tonight

Edit; Hope to meet Jim one day, next storm he has to come to Saluda!!!

Hello from Saluda NC.  Pics taken about 2 hours ago with my phone, will get out the DSLR when I warm up a bit.  30.2˚/30.1˚ according to friend down the street. He has a nice Wx station set up but doesn't belong to the forums, (70...ish older guy, doesn't like the internet)

Right now 17.5 inches total, about 13.5 snow and the rest sleet.  Moderate sleet with nickel sized flakes mixing in. Might have been some rain at time this morning.  Wet heavy snow/sleet and am starting to worry about the roof as I am approaching '93's totals that were not near this wet.    Shocked I still have power, heard some big limbs go down while shoveling the deck and ramp.  Hope everyone is getting slammed with snow, this will be a storm to remember!!!!

  8. Absolute sleet fest going on this morning.  15.5 inches total, about 13.75 inches snow and the rest sleet. 27˚/26˚.  Unsure of rates but I've never seen (more like heard) the sleet so heavy.  Still have power believe it or not, though it has dimmed a few time this morning.

Edit addition; Hey, does anyone have an opinion on if that warm nose is strong enough to flip this to all rain for a while down here?
