  1. Hi everybody,

    +10.3C yesterday morning, -24.3C now.

The difference is even stronger in Haines Junction (+14.5/-27.0) and Burwash (+14.0/-30.0).

Yesterday was a crazy day with warm temperatures, then rain (with ice on ground) and an unusual snow storm with between 15 cm and 25 cm in south Yukon, and now the cold.

We may however get warmer temperatures again with a risk to have highs above zero in Whitehorse between Thursday and Sunday.

After a wonderful month of November, December seems to be more chaotic.

glad the weather is keeping you on your toes...things have been boring and too warm along the east coast of the U.S....

    *sigh*

  2. Dec 1992 had a prediction of 2-4 inches 24 hours before the storm, lol. They maybe meant feet and not inches.

It started as rain here too...I was in 6th grade and in social studies class right next to the window and the radiator....I was falling asleep from the hot air blowing on me but was staring out the window. Then all of the sudden a huge gust of wind came and the air filled with flakes, and as the gust subsided the flakes did too and it went back to mostly to rain...this process continued for about 10 minutes and then eventually one gust brought the flakes back and they never left after that. That was about 11:15 am on that Friday morning.

i was a freshman, in trig class...just staring out the window...the wind kept gusting and i would look as hard as i could to see if i could see any snowflakes mixed in when the rain hit the windows...i think i started hallucinating snowflakes...since it didn't change over at my place until 6am on saturday...but i was useless all day in school...

  3. Dec 1992 is the storm of infamy . ORH got crushed with 36 inches. 16-22 in NE Ct.power out for days with tree damage to naked trees. with heavy rains and high wind for the coast of SNE.

We need another one of those. The thing was crawling

That storm is one of my worst memories ever. I swear I almost cried in that one.

i do remember this storm!!! it poured all day the first day...and by 6am the following morning it had changed to snow...and it snowed until a bit after sunset...i eneded up with 24inches of heavy wet snow! school was cancelled m-w the following week...i can't even imagine if it had been all snow!!!

  4. You defintely weren't a big enough weenie back then. I wish I had a camera on me back then, because I must have either had my jaw on the ground the whole time, or smiling ear to ear like the joker. I was in total shock and awe the whole time. Complete awe. January 2005 was close given the combo of snow rates and wind, but I just remember thinking to myself that this can't be happening, during the 3/31-4/1 snow event.

i wish i could use that as my excuse...but i've been a huge weenie since i was 4...my brain is just weird about the details it stores and the details it doesn't...i do remember the winter of 95-96...that pattern brought in a storm every other day...i think 2005 was the year the Cape got demolished...my sister lives in plymouth...she kept getting hammered while, i kept getting 6inchers...

i wish i could remember everything about everything...

  5. this thread totally just made me geek out on you tube looking at past storm images and video...i wish i had a brain like Will's...some of the recent storms from 2005, and 2007 i don't remember :(

and the April Fool's Storm...i don't remember anything about the snowfalling or intensity...i just remember measuring various places on my driveway and in my back yard ang getting 36inches...

    my brain sucks!!!

  6. http://www.toastmasters.org/ or something like you local unemployment/workforce central office...i realize that you are in western mass, so i'm just using the Milford, MA office as an example...but once or twice a week they offer free classes on subjects such as resume writing and interview practice...you can start out by doing a mock 1 on 1 interview...and they also have mock group interviews...most people don't even think to utilize those resources...

like i said in my prior post...you will never be perfect...but you can make improvements and build self confidence...

  7. What types of met jobs do you think are best suited for the "quiet weather geek"? I'll be totally honest, verbal communication has never been my strong point, and this has probably hindered my ability to land a job in the field. It seems like what you said is not only true with energy met jobs, but with operational met jobs in general. Unfair as it is, it seems as if many employers value communication ability over talent.

well here's the deal with that...communication is a huge part of being a meteorologist...it's your job to use your knowledge and training to disseminate/communicate information to the general public or clients...

if communication is a weak area for you, then you need to work on it...you may never be the best public speaker or the most eloquent...but you can build adequate skills for what you need to do...in the field of meteorology, it is absolutely imperative you know how to communicate...

not trying to go all psychologist on you...but because you know you have a weakness in communication, it seems like you are hyper aware of your "deficiency" and this leads to a lack of confidence...and a lack of confidence will also hinder your ability to communicate effectively...

if you really truly want to improve, you start off with a basic public speaking class...or join something like Toastmasters...you'll be surprised at how much easier public speaking is once you boost your confidence...

also, it seems as if you need to work on your interviewing skills...this will also improve if you boost your confidence/comfortlevel with verbal communication...it could be that because you don't think you are a good communicator you worry too much while you are trying to communicate and that worry actually gets in the way of you being able to communicate effectively..

here's the deal...i don't usually share this information...but i stutter...and i am painfully aware of how that effects my ability to verbally communicate...in the beginning i passed up some job interviews because i didn't want the interviewer to hear me bumble around like an idiot...and i still remember this horrid interview i had with the USGS EROS Data Center...oh my, i crashed and burned, to the point where i only got through half the interview and they stopped it and said "Thanks but no thanks"

but, this is who i am...i can't make it go away, so i find away to work with it...it will always be a bit harder for me than the rest of the population to verbally communicate, but i can't hide from life...i just have more confidence now...and if i mess up, well, it happens...i just stop, take a breath and start over...

  8. I never like it when the veteran subject comes up because it is a very sensitive subject. How can anyone argue against someone who has put their life on the line for their country? I have friends who have died in the military (one a good friend who died at age of 20) in Iraq. What I dislike is this often devolves into a veteran vs. non-veteran discussion, something it was never meant to be. Veterans performed a special purpose very few can ever claim, but I do believe the job should go to the best qualified. Is a Ph.D the most qualified? An experienced and trained meteorologist? A veteran? The hiring process is far from perfect, and it never will be, but I hope non-vets will consider the sacrifice of vets, and I hope vets will consider the sacrifice of long-term students/graduate students who have advanced meteorology to where it is today (compare it to 50 years ago). Life is unfair for everyone and there isn't much we can do but try the best we can.

you make a better diplomat than I...

this is subject that I am passionate about...and if my passion rears it's head while I'm debating, then so be it...

  9. I know that vets are not simply handed jobs. I never said that. They have to have the qualifications as you say. But if you have two applicants who are both basically qualified as say, a gs-9 and the vet, while being basically qualified do to schooling and experience, doesn't have anything else on his resume that really makes him stand out as a top candidate for the meteorology job and the other guy (not vet) does, I don't think it's fair that the MIC has no choice but to hire the Vet even if he wanted to pick other guy. Instead of giving Vets these kind of perks that are unfair to others applying for Govt jobs we should be paying them better and making sure they are well taken care of in terms of health benefits and what not for serving our country.

I agree with you but there are probably better and more effective ways to state your cause than minimizing others.

actually, I enjoy research papers and launching weather balloons, and doing calculus, and physics...

my response was not to belittle anyone, my response was to the statement in bold...I feel military service is something that makes you stand out, over and above the ability to complete a research paper or launch a weather balloon

  10. I know that vets are not simply handed jobs. I never said that. They have to have the qualifications as you say. i'm just amazed that there are people out there who feel this way...

first off, not in my lifetime...or many lifetimes yet to come, will there ever be any services or "perks" that could ever come close to compensating those who have served and sacrificed in the military...

2nd, this benefit is only for govt jobs...and Vets have worked for/served the govt...

i'm sorry, but someone who has veterans status sure stands out in my book, over someone who spent their life in academia where their biggest worry was some research paper, or launching a weather balloon

  11. No they aren't handed jobs, but the way it is now in the NWS (unless I am gravely mistaken..and I very well may be) if they have the requirements and schooling they will get the job, it doesn't matter how much experience Nick has.

it has been that way for all govt jobs, for a long time...this is nothing new...two applicants, with equal schooling, and equal experience, pitted sided by side...the one who is a Vet will get the job...

what i'm trying to dispel is the myth that the govt hands jobs to Vets without taking into consideration whether or not the Vet has the necessary qualifications...that is false

besides, any person who signs their life over to the govt for a certain amount of years, should have extra preference when it comes to govt jobs...

  12. In most M.S. programs, you're given a tuition waiver and a stipend, so it shouldn't further your student debt.

    this is a possibilty...

but, i don't know the first thing about forecasting...getting my masters isn't going to teach me the operational forecasting meat and potatoes you get through undergrad...which is what i'm interested in...

i have thought about going into the Air Force

  13. I'm also a bit touchy on the Vet subject...being a Vet, and underemployed...well, I might as well face it...when i was employed, i was underemployed, except my job ended last friday...so now i'm just unemployed...

first off, in govt jobs, you don't block people just by being a Vet...you have to have the schooling and the experience for the job you are applying for...Vets just don't get handed jobs...if Nick and I both apply for the same NWS job...and we are the only two applicants...he's going to get the job because he has his degree and he has been working as a Met...my Vet status won't count for crap...

so for those of you who had thought otherwise, you are wrong and you need not post anymore on this subject...

  14. well, i have been keeping an eye on this topic...truthfully, this thread brings up one of my biggest concerns since i'm thinking about putting in the effort and money to finish up my met degree...is it worth it? what happens if i take out more loans (i already have a BS ) and put in the time to go back to school, but then can't find crap for work? or not end up doing anything with my degree? (that would make two degrees i'm not doing anything with)

i wrestle with that reality, a lot...

  15. Hello,

I wear several layers. Dow to -30C, I usually wear warm underwears + a warm jacket (Canada Goose) and lined trousers + 2 pairs of sockets + warm boots + hat. Below, I add a sweater.

This afternoon, we got -24C, we hiked in the Fish Lake area. It was magic, with ice crystal and temperatures ranging between -32 and -36C. I will post some pictures tomorrow.

i love it! this made me smile and LOL!!!
