  1. Hi everybody !

I did not post very much pas weeks, weather has been so boring in February....

We have been about 6C above the normals here, whereas the airport and Dawson City have almost been +8C above the normals. No comment....

This week seems however to be very snow here in the Whitehorse area with +15 cm snowfall forecast by GFS.

Wait & See, for sure, but if so, I would break my personal snow depth record which is 47 cm.

    I will keep you posted.

    Have a great day !

  2. Good evening everybody,

Very mild here in the territory, with temperatures up to +7C in Mayo, +6 in Watson lake, +4 in Faro, +2 here at my place.

We also got some rain, which is a bit incredible at this time of the year. Roads and streets were very icy in my area, and wind gusts up to 90 km/h in south Yukon drove to some power outages.

Temperatures will go down in upcoming days, and it should not be too cold with sunny conditions !

Tomorrow, it is the start of the Yukon Quest with links Fairbanks to Whitehorse for this 1,000 miles race !

Conditions seem to be far better than last year.

  3. For sure it is possible to go outside with a -40/-50C cold.

Last week, I walked the dogs with temperatures ranging -40/-47, and it was possible.

Ad cmichweather mentions it, you should protect your mouth and nose and not take your breath directly, you should put some stuff between them and the frigid air.

For everything else (pants, jackets, gloves, bonnet), you have perfect clothes here to go outside...

-53C this morning in Old Crow .... brrrrrrrrrr :santa: !

  4. everyday seems like it is amazng where you live, Mt Blanc! do you have any neighbors? how far a drive is it to buy groceries or other things? you take pics from an elevated location, do you hike up,or do you live in an elevated area?

    Thanks thebiggrmbalski  !

It is not always like this, but I try to take life as it comes and to be positive...

Our subdivision is 20 kms north from downtown Whitehorse.

My neighbors are 50 meters right and left and 300 meters north from my house. We are not isolated but the land is large enough (4 acres) to feel quiet.

I am located at 660m, but Vista Road is between 770/1070, Fish Lake 1110/1500 and Grey Mountain 870/1500.

The area is mountainous, with big valleys, and peaks up to 2000m.

  5. Hello everybody

    -42.1/-32.5

    -46.4/-36.0

    -40.8/-32.1

    -40.4/-31.4

    -44.1/-34.3

and -44.8 for this morning, our 6th day with a low below -40C.

This cold snap is really interesting.,

Upcoming days will be a bit different, with warmer temperatures and some snow.

We may expect the cold to come back on Thursday.

I will post some pictures this weekend to give you an idea about the conditions uphere !

  6. Yes, Roger, winter is definitely here or back (for us in Yukon after a beautiful month of November).

Almost all Canada will be shop by this cold snap, we may reach in some places -45/-50.

It seems that for me in Whitehorse, it will be great but not exceptional, but the difference will be significant in some places (Alberta or BC) where you get highs of +10 these past days.

I am also happy because the cold will stay in Yukon more than a couple of days, and we can hope keeping cold conditions for at least 7/10 days...

  7. Hello everybody,

-0.2 this night, -17.1 this evening, with almost 10C lost in one hour this morning. Burwash even lost 18C in one hour yesterday.

Thermometer is still playing yoyo with no durable winter conditions since the end of November.

BUT, this will soon by a bad memory with the big cold coming on the weekend:

The -40's or -50's are likely with such a configuration, specially when the wind will stop (certainely next week). For the forecast, it is here!.

Welcome back to the winter  !

  8. Patrick, do you speak about grizzly or brown?

It looks like this is a grizzly bear on this picture?

About what you wrote, I agree at 100%.

Here in Yukon, it looks like warmer than it is. A +15/+20C is pretty comfortable, a +30C is really hot. It is dry, sun is high in the sky, mosquitoes are not so bad (depends on the year), a moose can be much more dangerous than a bear, light is so wonderful, ....

And I am not a tour operator lol !

  9. Hello everybody,

Still too warm here and December will certainly end up with a +7C anomaly....

We have now -15.5C but it should again warm up here with a risk of above 0C temperatures, starting Sunday.

Central and Western Canada may get a warm wave next week according to GFS model... with +10C at 850 hPa !

Here are some pictures I took last Monday on the Alaska Highway (click on the picture to access the album):

    Have a great day !

  10. I hope Mt Blanc is ok...he hasn't posted in a while!

    Yes I am.

I was very sick last week, but now I feel much better.

Just the weather which is boring with temperatures 7C above the normals for the period Dec 1-21 !

    Normals for December:

    -20.4

    -9.5

    -14.9

    Values Dec 1-21:

    -14.1 (+6.3)

    -1.6 (+7.9)

    -7.8 (+7.1)

It should become a bit colder next week in South Yukon, but we will unfortunately again stay aside the cold which will visit you and the North of Yukon.

Since I am living here, it is the longest period of warm temperatures I ever got (almost one month with no real cold).

    Merry Christmas to you !

  11. Hi everybody,

    +10.3C yesterday morning, -24.3C now.

The difference is even stronger in Haines Junction (+14.5/-27.0) and Burwash (+14.0/-30.0).

Yesterday was a crazy day with warm temperatures, then rain (with ice on ground) and an unusual snow storm with between 15 cm and 25 cm in south Yukon, and now the cold.

We may however get warmer temperatures again with a risk to have highs above zero in Whitehorse between Thursday and Sunday.

After a wonderful month of November, December seems to be more chaotic.
