With all the model waffling, this was a tough one. Kudos to the pros that held their ground! Watched Lee Goldberg on ch. 7 news at 11pm last night. He never backed down.

My point exactly.

Does anyone remember a storm in 1977 or 1978 that the media said was going to be all or mostly rain? Everyone woke up to a ton of snow. My father always brings it up but he can't recall exactly when it was.
It was Jan 21st 1978. Woke up to about 17 inches of snow.
5 days later, the "Ohio Valley Bomb" as it was nicknamed washed most of it away.

They really should only issue it for south jersey if anywhere, but the whole idea of "state of emergency" should only be issued for something like Sandy. Maybe they need to have a lower level of alert? Did they ever think of that? And they could call it "State of Preparedness". Leave the "State of Emergency" only for historic and truly life threatening conditions.
Agreed

Yup, lots of problems on the roads. 6.5" I think.... the earliest 6" storm there on record I believe (here we had 8" on November 7, 2012 a week after Sandy, and 14" in Freehold.)
I understand getting blindsided like that, but the problem is that after a while, it becomes like the "boy who cried wolf". Also issuing a state of emergency preemptively should be saved for much bigger, widespread storms.
IF a state of emergency is issued in a situation like this it should be limited to the areas under the WSW.
Finally, issuing a state for 4 to 6 inches of snow is an overreaction, period! Just MHO. I

Wasn't that the storm that was supposed to change to rain but never did?
I believe so. It changed in NYC as I recall, but way later than expected.

Murphy administration issues a state of emergency if a kitten sneezes.
Ever since the November 2018 storm which caught many off guard as it was underforcast in many areas, they panic every time a snow flake flies.

No, the last 2 winters is not the norm. I grew up in the late 80s and 90s and never experienced back to back winters like this. The snow drought we've been through is unprecedented and now we have people (even a meteorologist mind you) saying that it normally takes a miracle to get snow around here. Lets gain some perspective, what we've seen the last 2 years is not the norm. Even in bad years, we usually still get double digits.
What we've seen the last 2 years is part of what goes into long term averages.

NYC averages 25-30 inches a year. This isn't Atlanta. What we've seen the last few winters is NOT the normal outcome.
Yes it is. If you were around during the 80s & 90s you'd understand.

YeH, I go back to the 60s, memorywise. I grew up in Maryland, and yeah the same there. When we moved to NJ in the early 70s, it was Bob Harris, Frank Field an Tex Antoine.
Bob was real good IMHO. Too bad he held himself out as a Met, when he wasn't. Frank Field just followed the NWS, no disrespect to him at all
Tex Antoine, well we know what happened.

06Z GFS was a nice hit for the area. Won't be heavy snow but showed a solid 18 hour storm....easily can pick up 4-8 inches in that setup.
It's funny how perspectives have changed over the last 20 years or so. In the 80s and most of the 90s, 4 to 8 was considered a heavy snowstorm.

I remember with most of the winters during the 80s & 90s, the way I survived (emotionally) was I'd hope for one decent snowstorm and just get on with life.
Keeping expectations low kept me sane.
