  1. After the snow started I grabbed some Zs. Usually I don't like to miss any moment of a snowstorm. Tonight feels special though, with over 24 hours of duration and secure temps I felt relaxed. I enjoy the rush of attempting to predict what systems will do and yet, this was nice. Waking up to a field of white and knowing you don't have school/some other responsibilities... I still woke up early like a man possessed but I think I'm at peace for now. Anyway I haven't taken measurements yet but there is a solid inch plus of powder. Temperatures have seemingly leveled at 23.  Light snowfall currently. :snowman:
To those commuting today yall be safe, and hopefully yall in the southern great valley can overcome mixing trouble.
I can relate! I tried to sleep but kept dreaming I was waking up and it was warm and rainy. In my dream I would go back to bed feeling disappointed. This happened three times and when I finally did get up I was apprehensive about looking outside. But lo and behold, it is a winter wonderland! About an inch and still light snow falling. It's 29 degrees here in Oak Ridge, TN. I'm so looking forward to a day of falling snow. That's a rarity these days!

Is there a way to tell where posters live? I check their profile but don't see a location. Folks are posting their current weather conditions and it would be good to know the location they're talking about.

Everyone be safe and enjoy the snow!

  2. That's the best whole of Tennessee winter storm since the 1970s. Somehow it didn't make MRX's list of memorable winter events. Of course there's a ton of missing data and questionable snow reports on the official record from that storm.
So true, John. It's hard to find any info on it. I went to the library and found what the local newspaper had documented, and I also found something online about it being an unusual event for Anderson Co, but that was scant. Folks talk about the blizzard of '93 but never the snowstorms of '96. The blizzard in my town was incredible because of the thundersnow and we did get several inches, but as I recall it was gone in a few days. Of course it was mid March so that's to be expected! It just doesn't have the impact for me that '96 did. I do love me some snow.

  3. 96 was the last time i remember snow on snow and significant snow on the ground for 2 straight weeks, with snow mounds all over the parking lots around the city.  If I remember correct, we got it going by having a heavy rain change to heavy snow.  I remember everyone in college talking about how the weather guys missed another one when the heavy rain was falling..  lol
I live in Anderson County, TN in Oak Ridge and the snow we had in Feb 1996 was incredible. One of the best I've seen in my life time and I'm 68 yrs old. With that particular storm, the mets were not predicting snow, but heavy ice. In inches. The thought of it icing that much was scary. That evening it started sleeting and 30 min later changed to all snow and stayed snow. Never had any ice thank goodness. Here in town we got about 18 inches and I have never seen snow fall that heavily, and straight down cause there was no wind. Businesses closed and people were walking instead of driving. The streets were literally snow packed and it snowed off and on for two weeks. We did a LOT of sledding! Anyway, sorry to be so long with my post, but it truly was a magical time. I even journaled it and glad I did! I just wished I'd gotten some pics!

  4. Robert Gamble of WxSouth's post on Facebook today...

Smooth sailing ahead this week, except tomorrow in VA, Carolinas down to Florida with mainly light precip. There could be an hour or 2 in the NC piedmont early morning for very brief light freezing rain or a sleet pellet, then temps go above 32 ---but will be a raw, cold Monday east of the Apps.

Then just a series of dry fronts but much sunnier weather to finish out the week most of the central and Southeast US. The next system with any potential for development of Gulf moisture will be Saturday night and Sunday--very little chance though, but worth a watch in GA, FL, Carolinas for possibly some precip. That is followed by another pretty sharp cool down, that won't last too long.

  5. We received a tad over 3 inches at my house in Oak Ridge, but driving around town there appears to be less snow. I live on a ridge though and this storm was definitely elevation dependent. Was a treat this morning watching two foxes playing!1854817760_PXL_20220117_1326110203.thumb.jpg.4c15efa75aaddde81e2a1b79b6557a01.jpg

@Holston_River_Rambler...here's the Xsec at TYS from the 12z RGEM and 3k NAM...trend the last 4 runs has to been slowly erode the finger quicker. At Lovell, the finger is almost completely gone, which is what is jumping the totals over the southern valley on some models

So we're not getting  the "finger" as bad as we were?  :)

It’s got to be because they don’t know what to do, but you’re right. The least they could do would be to issue a hazardous weather statement. I also think according to NWS protocol they don’t usually issue wwa’s this soon. Winter storm watches, yes, advisories, no. Also, HUN and FFC have lower standards than MRX for WSW criteria (2in is all it takes there. It’s 4in here.) so, what would be a warning in AL or GA, here would only be an advisory. These would just be my humble opinions on why they don’t have anything yet.

I also think Morristown tends to be more conservative with their forecasting.

  8. This storm reminds me somewhat of the storm we had in Feb 1996. Everyone was predicting ice or rain, no snow for our area in the ETN valley, and here in Anderson County we ended up getting pounded. Sleet fell for about 30 minutes then turned to snow. Almost 2 feet and the hardest I've ever seen snow fall. Made for many days of awesome sledding!

  9. I get that this storm is difficult to forecast, but really surprised that NWS has issued absolutely nothing for the east TN Valley. I would expect at least a Hazardous Weather statement of some sort since we have the possibility of wintry precip in the area. It's just odd.
