    Florence Observations

My friends have a house on the Black River near Ivanhoe, NC. It sits on a bluff around 20-25 feet above it. Floyd got to the top off the bluff. Matthew got to the base of their house. And now the river gauge is showing a foot higher than Matthew. Unbelievable that this area has seen historic flooding 3 times in the last 20 years.

    Hurricane Florence

Where did you get this product? Been hunting around the GSP webpage for 15 minutes.

    Hurricane Florence

I have to respectfully disagree. Yes, it limits wind damage further inland, but a stall could produce astronomical flooding in eastern NC. I would much rather see a faster moving storm.

    Tropical Storm Jose

He ran the other one based on the projected location of Jose after the loop to loop, which is further south than it's current location, hence the higher percentage of going onshore.
  6. I have a friend in the Reems Creek area about 10 or so miles NNW of Asheville who has 4 inches of snow. Here in West Asheville we have over 8. Crazy difference. Sent from my SM-T320 using Tapatalk
  7. I don't like the big hole in Buncombe County that this QPF map shows. I assume this is from downsloping winds? Still should be a good amount of snow, but the map suggests closer to 8 inches than 18 for western Buncombe. That may not be a bad thing if everyone is getting clobbered.
  8. To my recollection this is the most snow forecast for this area by the NWS since I moved to Asheville in 1997.

    January 2016 BANTER

GSP or any other NWS office is going to use every tool in their toolbox. Their forecasts are what are used to determine the actions of local and state governments, and their forecasts are the most scrutinized because of this. They will use every tool they have to come up with the best forecast, and they are the forecasters I trust the most.

3rd Annual Snow Thread for the Mountains

Still coming down nicely. As someone mentioned earlier, it is such a treat to take a walk in the snow.

3rd Annual Snow Thread for the Mountains

I know I had some pessimistic posts earlier, but this is beautiful. Some of the best flakes I have seen tonight. My dogs are loving it.

3rd Annual Snow Thread for the Mountains

2 1/4 inches in West Asheville. Still coming down at a slow and steady clip.

3rd Annual Snow Thread for the Mountains

I'm just not seeing it. Hoping some of those nice returns in NE GA can make it here, but not seeing much behind it. That being said, the snow that has come down so far has been beautiful, but I think we will be lucky to reach the lower end of our forecast.

3rd Annual Snow Thread for the Mountains

Maybe I need to wipe the dust off of my old textbooks. Hoping it works out for us.

3rd Annual Snow Thread for the Mountains

Hate to be the pessimist, but I can see how the GSP forecast could verify for the Asheville area. It really depends on when the energy transfer to the east happens. It will be an hour or two before we start to see some of the heavier returns. Hopefully we can get some good accumulation before that happens.
