we had a shower earlier and now it's thundering, but that's it so far.

we drove back from Ohio yesterday and the traffic was heavy the entire time. there were multiple accidents and some construction, and at one point Waze routed us through Pittsburgh itself, where we saw a bunch of the city’s bridges. on the other hand, a different detour landed us in an Amish town, complete with horses and buggies.
the experience was worth every inconvenience. i still can’t believe what i saw fewer than 48 hours ago.

The red spot was a really interesting part of the experience. Evidently we did see a prominence. In my view it was at about 7 o’clock on the sun’s ring.

I will tell you this. Pictures will never do a justice!!!
truth.
the air cooling, the bird chorus, the silence as the color and then the light drain away as totality approaches—that can’t be photographed.

about 15 min to totality here. it's cooler, dimmer, and the birds are singing. we have high clouds but i'm still hoping to see the corona at totality.

clouds coming back, but the sun is still visible.

we’re set up on the hotel’s patio. we’ve got lunch, wifi, bathrooms, and a good view of the sky. our initial choice had too many trees blocking the sky.

I keep checking the forecast and pivot so fast between optimistic and very nervous for my spot. Would really rather not drive any further west if I can avoid it tomorrow morning - trying to get back to DC by no later than midnight.
Also debating whether or not I care about having a cool place to view the eclipse from. Tempted by the Walmart next to the highway that will provide unlimited (but not free!) snacks and facilities - plus a crazy quick exit in the aftermath.20 minutes ago, nj2va said:I watched 2017 from a Rite Aid parking lot in SW NC, which allowed me to hop on the highway quickly. It worked out well!
we might just watch it from the hotel patio since we’re not going to chase any further and we won’t have to fight traffic.

we’re at our hotel between Cleveland and Akron. no problem at all with traffic.

Yeah but at least it would be a trip to Italy and a cruise. Plus... The boat can adjust course to hopefully better setup the day of.
unless a sick passenger needs to be disembarked or a storm comes up, or the cruise itinerary is changed at the last minute. it happens a lot.
we're staying south of Cleveland in a small town with just a few activities going on. we'll go to a local park if it's clear, and to the beer garden across from our hotel if we're socked in with clouds. i'm really happy to be able to see a total eclipse.

We got a hotel room where it's 99.7% totality, in Utica. Our daughter goes to school up near there so we're hooking up with her since her friends can't get their act together to see it. I think we're just going to stay at the hotel and if we miss out on 0.3%, it'll be worth it to have access to a bathroom and not worry about traffic. One thing giving me a little pause is the NWS threat matrix product, which shows 49% sky cover for Monday for Utica at 12 pm. But the p-and-c forecast is mostly sunny.
clouds won't matter because you're not in the zone of totality.
